Just Weird Enough or Way too Weird?

I really like weird names and am fine with them being weird to a certain extent–but I have no idea what other’s think about my names and I don’t want to stick my kids with names that will embarrass them. I’d love to get some feedback on some of my favorite weird names! [name_f]My[/name_f] main questions are: Is it usable? Does it remind you of something? If you heard it on the playground or saw it on your kid’s class roster, would you be pleasantly surprised, not give it a second thought, or be completely appalled? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it? I am going to give a brief outlook on why I chose the names so that you know what isn’t an issue for me and what I’m questioning. I understand this list is big, so don’t feel the need to answer all the questions/give an opinion on every one of them. Other suggestions are also appreciated! Thank you!

[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] “[name_u]Ziggy[/name_u]/Zig” - late grandpa’s middle name, but the rest of the family hates it + grandpa wasn’t always the best namesake (not awful just had issues like most people.) I’d love it even if it wasn’t a family name. In my top 3 at the moment.
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m] “[name_m]Wells[/name_m]” - I’m a big extraterrestrial nerd, but is this too out there? I do love the way it sounds & looks. I love the nickname [name_m]Wells[/name_m], but I’m not sure if it’s that intuitive. In my top 3 at the moment.
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m] “[name_m]Cas[/name_m]” (prn Kahz-MEER) - Is [name_m]Casper[/name_m] an applicable nickname for this? Is this name feasible in the US? [name_m]Will[/name_m] nobody be able to pronounce it? I like it because I think it has a great sound, looks nice on the page, and I’m half Polish/Slavic.
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m] (prn MEER-cha) - Romanian name, I do know someone named this, so it might be weird to use it.
[name_u]Finch[/name_u] - I love the nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] even though it’s so short it doesn’t need a nn
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] - Is [name_m]Lazlo[/name_m] more usable?
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] “[name_u]Wolf[/name_u]”
[name_m]Orville[/name_m] - I love the connection to the [name_m]Wright[/name_m] brothers. The popcorn connection isn’t a huge bother , just a little bit funny because I formerly worked at a movie theater. But is it ahead of the trend when it comes to ‘grandpa names coming back’ or is it way too dusty?
[name_m]Grover[/name_m] - [name_m]Long[/name_m] time favorite; don’t care about [name_f]Sesame[/name_f] [name_f]Street[/name_f], I think it sounds very friendly, but I do wonder if it’s too old.
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] - I know that this name is used mostly by the Hispanic community, is it too weird for another race to use?
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u] “[name_u]Wilde[/name_u]” - Is this timeless or trendy?
[name_u]Oleander[/name_u] “Oli/Andy”
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]
[name_m]Altair[/name_m]
[name_m]Luther[/name_m]
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u] - trendy?
[name_m]Castor[/name_m] “[name_m]Cas[/name_m]” - too oily?
[name_m]Howlan[/name_m] - trendy?
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]/Fintan/Finnian “[name_u]Finn[/name_u]” - trendy?
[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] - too Russian for an American baby? Is the [name_m]Alexei[/name_m] spelling better?
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u]
[name_u]Fargo[/name_u] - If you can name your kid [name_u]London[/name_u] or [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] why not [name_u]Fargo[/name_u]? (I’m genuinely asking lol.)
[name_u]Mars[/name_u] - I love this, but it’s my dog’s nickname and he’ll probably be around when I have kids.
[name_m]Franz[/name_m]
[name_u]Mako[/name_u] - usually pronounced Mah-Ko when used as a Japanese name, would I be able to get away with pronouncing it [name_f]May[/name_f]-Ko, like the shark?
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m] “[name_m]Wells[/name_m]” - I love this name, but a lot of literary names from classics such as [name_u]Holden[/name_u] & [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] are seen as pretentious or used by people flexing faux intellect. Would people make that assumption if I used this?
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m] - version of my dad’s name, I think it’s cute but I can’t tell-weird or boring for a kid in the US?
[name_m]Bear[/name_m] - too trendy?
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u] - too literal?
[name_m]Koa[/name_m] - too trendy? Too girly?
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]

I think all of these are perfectly usable!

These are such fun names! Some of them would be too brave for me to use, but I don’t see any problems with others using them!

These are all useable!

[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] - [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] is cute, and there are definitely some people who could rock [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m], but for others it might be a bit much.
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m] - definitely usable, and I think [name_m]Wells[/name_m] is handsome and fairly intuitive (or at least not out there)
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m] - I will admit I first read this CAZ-meer, but it’s an easy correction. Usable, especially with the nn [name_m]Cas[/name_m].
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m] - this isn’t a name I’m familiar with, and I honestly would assume it’s a girls name. Maybe usable in Romania, but it’s one of the few here I would say isn’t usable elsewhere
[name_u]Finch[/name_u] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it! You could definitely use [name_u]Finn[/name_u] if you wanted. The biggest association for me is To Kill a Mockingbird, which I consider a positive association
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] - it might be mispelt [name_m]Lazlo[/name_m], but the extra s is fine imo. I don’t think I’ve heard it before, but it’s really cute!
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it, mostly reminds me of [name_m]Mozart[/name_m], but I think that’s cool. Nn [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] is so awesome.
[name_m]Orville[/name_m] - not a favourite of mine because I think it sounds like a grumbly old man, but it’s usable
[name_m]Grover[/name_m] - reminds me of [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u]… It’s usable but again not my preference
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] - sounds cool, I’m not really qualified to decide if non-Hispanic parents can use it
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u] - a super cool variant on popular names like [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], [name_u]Archer[/name_u], etc. And [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] is a cool literary reference.
[name_u]Oleander[/name_u] - definitely usable, especially with the familiar nicknames Oli and [name_u]Andy[/name_u]
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] - I don’t love it but it’s totally usable
[name_m]Altair[/name_m] - ooh cool! I like it… Sounds like a blend between [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] and [name_u]Adair[/name_u]… [name_f]May[/name_f] be a bit unfamiliar, but usable
[name_m]Luther[/name_m] - makes me think of [name_m]Martin[/name_m] [name_m]Luther[/name_m], [name_m]Martin[/name_m] [name_m]Luther[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Jr[/name_m], and [name_u]Lex[/name_u] [name_m]Luther[/name_m], which I’d say is overall fairly positive.
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u] - a bit trendy, I agree, but not overly popular. Still not a favourite of mine.
[name_m]Castor[/name_m] - yeah, a bit oily. Maybe usable?
[name_m]Howlan[/name_m] - I wouldn’t describe this as trendy… in fact it might be one that I would say is unusable. But it’s up to you.
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]/Finnian/Fintan - trendy indeed, but I love them anyways! Especially [name_u]Finley[/name_u]!
[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] - I love [name_m]Alexei[/name_m], but I would probably assume an [name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] is Russian. This doesn’t make it totally unusable but it would cause some confusion
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u] - I’m from [name_f]Alberta[/name_f] so this makes me think of Calaway park in Calgary, but im sure people elsewhere wouldnt have the association. Usable, and [name_u]Cal[/name_u] is cool.
[name_u]Fargo[/name_u] - I don’t see why not!
[name_u]Mars[/name_u] - my biggest associations are [name_m]Bruno[/name_m] [name_u]Mars[/name_u] and the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] god of war so… Maybe not things I would want to associate with my kid… It might be kind of cool to have this reminder of your beloved pet, but also maybe a little weird.
[name_m]Franz[/name_m] - cool, a bit old but in a neat way. However, my association is Archduke [name_m]Franz[/name_m] [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m] from [name_f]Austria[/name_f] whose murder is considered the beginning of WWI, sooo… not for me.
[name_u]Mako[/name_u] - not sure I’m the one to ask about the pronunciation, but either way is cool
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m] - sounds royal and brave… very handsome name!
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m] - makes me think of [name_u]George[/name_u] [name_m]Orwell[/name_m], who, in my opinion, was a pretty cool guy, so that’s a positive association! Doesn’t seem too pretentious, especially with [name_m]Wells[/name_m] as a nn.
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m] - im not sure how this is pronounced, but I think it’s usable.
[name_m]Bear[/name_m] - trendy, yes, and not my favourite animal name. Very cute though. Maybe as a pet-/nickname?
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u] - very cool! I would think of it more as a girls name (not sure why) but it wouldn’t have to be.
[name_m]Koa[/name_m] - not at all girly to me. Sounds similar to [name_u]Noah[/name_u]… But way cooler!
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] - probably my favourite planet name, and while the mythological associations may not be the greatest, I like enough that I would say it’s usable.

Overall, I’d say any of these would be usable if you love them and are brave enough, especially if you have a more familiar nickname or middlename he could use if he didn’t want to use the full name for some reason.

I like so many of these names, and I think they are perfectly useable.
I’ll try answer as many of the questions as I can!
Zigmund - I think its fine, its not my favourite but [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u]/Zig is so cute. I would probably be surprised to hear it in real life, but pleasantly surprised!
Roswell - I love it, I dont think its too weird at all! I like the nn [name_m]Wells[/name_m], but I prefer [name_f]Ro[/name_f].
Casimir - I really like [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]! It is seriously such a nice name. I dont think [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is a nickname for it, but [name_m]Cas[/name_m] is lovely! I always keep thinking its Kahz-ih-MEER, but I dont think you would run into too many pronounciation issues.
Mircea - I’ve never heard this before, but its so beautiful! Definitely not too weird to use.
Finch - I love [name_u]Finch[/name_u], I have it in one of my combos. I dont think its too weird to use, bird names arent unheard of ([name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_u]Lark[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], etc)
Laszlo - I like [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m], but do slightly prefer the [name_m]Lazlo[/name_m] spelling. I dont think its weird, I would love to meet a [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]!
Wolfgang - I dont really like [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m], but I dont think it would be strange to use at all.
Orville - I think [name_m]Orville[/name_m] is just a tad bit dusty.
Grover - It does seem quite old, not really a youthful name, but there is something really charming about it. I might think twice about it if I met someone named [name_m]Grover[/name_m] in real life, but I wouldnt be horrified lol!
Hector - Im not Hispanic, so I cant really speak on it much, but I dont think it would be strange for another race to use [name_m]Hector[/name_m].
Wilder - I love this name! I think its timeless.
Oleander - I think [name_u]Oleander[/name_u] is cool, and Oli/Andy are precious. I dont think its too weird at all (it is a little weird, but in a good way!)
Roscoe - Definitely useable
Altair - Unfamiliar, but definitely useable!
Luther - [name_m]Luther[/name_m] is nice. Has a few great namesakes. I dont think its too weird, its quite familiar actually.
Huxley - I do think [name_u]Huxley[/name_u] is a bit trendy.
Castor - Yeah, a bit too oily for me. I do like [name_m]Cas[/name_m] though!
Howlan - Perhaps the first name on this list I would say is a little too weird to be useable.
Finley/Fintan/Finnian - Yes, quite trendy… But such lovely names. I love ‘[name_u]Finn[/name_u]’ and [name_u]Finley[/name_u] and [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] are lovely. [name_m]Fintan[/name_m] is a bit too weird for me,
Aleksei - I think [name_m]Alexei[/name_m] seems more ‘American’, I would assume [name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] is Russian/Slavic.
Calloway - It’s nice, but seems more like a last name than a first name to me. I wouldnt be put off if I met a [name_u]Calloway[/name_u] in real life though, so I do think its usable.
Fargo - I dont really like [name_u]Fargo[/name_u], but its not weird or anything
Mars - I LOVE [name_u]Mars[/name_u], definitely think its usable. If I can have a [name_f]Diana[/name_f] or a [name_f]Juno[/name_f], I can have a [name_u]Mars[/name_u].
Franz - I like [name_m]Franz[/name_m], I dont think its too weird at all!
Mako - I like it pronounced Mah-Ko, dont really love [name_f]May[/name_f]-Ko
Valerian - So wonderful! I think its useable for sure. I would love to meet a [name_m]Valerian[/name_m].
Orwell - I dont really feel that way about [name_u]Holden[/name_u] or [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], and certainly not with [name_m]Orwell[/name_m]. I think [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] is a wonderful name, it doesnt seem pretentious at all (okay maybe just a tad)
Pavel - Reminds me of Gravel, but I totally think its usable.
Bear - Very trendy. I personally find it a little too weird, I dont like [name_m]Bear[/name_m] at all,.
Ocean - I agree, it does seem feminine for some reason.
Koa - I dont think its too girly, seems usable to me
Jupiter - I love planet sames, and I love [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]. It is a little ‘out there’ though, in my opinion. But not enough for me to render it unusable.

None of them are so outlandish that I’d mark them unusable.

I love your list so much! We have a similar taste in names, I think!

Zigmund “[name_u]Ziggy[/name_u]” - I used to think this name was a little too much for me, until I watched the show Big [name_m]Little[/name_m] Lies. there’s an adorable little boy in it named [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] (full name Zigfield, I believe, but he goes by [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u]!). It really made me warm up to the name, and I think it’s so cool and edgy! I also think there’s an adorable, lovable quality about it. I personally prefer just [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u], but [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] is nice too! Aside from that show, [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] makes me think of [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] Stardust and [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] [name_u]Marley[/name_u] (which I think are both nice associations!).
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m] “[name_m]Wells[/name_m]” - [name_m]Wells[/name_m] is one of my favorite names! I first heard it in the show The 100, and instantly fell in love. It’s so handsome! I never would’ve thought of [name_m]Roswell[/name_m] for a full name, but I actually like it! It is a bit more bold, but I think [name_m]Roswell[/name_m] is familiar enough that it can work. [name_f]My[/name_f] only hesitation is that he may get the nickname “[name_f]Ros[/name_f]/Roz” from some people, which I’m not a fan of myself. I do like the alien aspect of it though. I like that it’s nerdy, but in a very cool way.
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m] “[name_m]Cas[/name_m]” - I’m a big fan of “[name_m]Cas[/name_m]-” names, so I like this! I do have to say, I do prefer other [name_m]Cas[/name_m] names myself though [Caspian (could get [name_m]Casper[/name_m] nn?), [name_m]Casper[/name_m]/Caspar, [name_m]Castiel[/name_m], [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], [name_m]Cassander[/name_m], [name_m]Caswell[/name_m] (could also get nn [name_m]Wells[/name_m] maybe?)], but [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] is very cool! I think it sounds more futuristic, or more fantasy-ish. You could maybe get away with [name_m]Casper[/name_m] as a nickname if you used a P middle! I do think it may get some pronunciation issues, but I think it’s an easy correction!
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m] - I have never heard of this name before! I think it’s lovely! It isn’t my favorite on your list though, and you might get some pronunciation issues, depending on where you live. It reminds me of the names [name_m]Marcello[/name_m], [name_u]Misha[/name_u], and [name_m]Miro[/name_m] (mee-ro)!
[name_u]Finch[/name_u] - this one of my absolute favorite names! I love that it’s both literary (reminds me of two of my favorite books!), and associated with nature. It’s my favorite way to get to nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] too! I think it fits in perfectly with currently popular word/animal names as well!
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] - I prefer the [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] spelling, it seems more familiar! It reminds me of the musician [name_m]Pete[/name_m] Wentz, who has a son named [name_m]Saint[/name_m] [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m], and an old cartoon named Camp [name_m]Lazlo[/name_m]. I like the sounds of it, but I’m not entirely in love with the name. There’s just something stopping me from loving it, I cant figure out what!
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] “[name_u]Wolf[/name_u]” - I love animal names, and [name_u]Wolf[/name_u] is one of my favorites! It’s so cool, but also has that cuddly and sweet quality to it. [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] isn’t my favorite, but it can definitely work on the right person. It reminds me of [name_m]Mozart[/name_m], [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] [name_u]Puck[/name_u], and [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] from the movie The Explorers.
[name_m]Orville[/name_m] - I have a soft spot for “grandpa names,” so I do like [name_m]Orville[/name_m], but I think the popcorn connection is just too strong. It can work though, he just might get a lot of popcorn comments. (I do think it’d be funny if you used it though, considering you worked at a movie theater!)
[name_m]Grover[/name_m] - [name_m]Grover[/name_m] definitely hits the sweet spot when it comes to “grandpa names.” Friendly is such a perfect way to describe it! I don’t mind the [name_f]Sesame[/name_f] [name_f]Street[/name_f] association (although, I do think you’d get comments about it), but I wish it didn’t make me think of [name_m]Grover[/name_m] [name_m]Cleveland[/name_m]! I also really love [name_u]Grove[/name_u], and similar name Grayer (I heard it in a movie a long time ago and fell in love, and it’s always reminded me of the name [name_m]Grover[/name_m]!).
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] - one of my favorites!!! I think anyone can use this name, I’ve known Hectors of all races. This has been a name I’ve loved for almost my whole life, because I really love the film Troy! (So it reminds me of both the movie, and the [name_m]Hector[/name_m] from mythology!)
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u] “[name_u]Wilde[/name_u]” - love [name_u]Wilder[/name_u]! I don’t think it’s too trendy. I think it’s handsome, literary, and cool!
[name_u]Oleander[/name_u] “Oli/Andy” - this is definitely a bolder choice, but still usable! I think Oli and [name_u]Andy[/name_u] make it more down to earth and friendly. I also like similar [name_m]Ollivander[/name_m]!
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] - oh, I have a soft spot for [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]! It’s just so sweet and cuddly, and it reminds me of a show I love.
[name_m]Altair[/name_m] - this is very cool! Sounds like a name from a fantasy novel. It reminds me of space, which I like. Also makes me think of both [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] and [name_m]Alistair[/name_m]!
[name_m]Luther[/name_m] - [name_m]Luther[/name_m] is a name I’ve recently started to love. It reminds me of The Umbrella Academy, and that character makes the name feel very cool and sweet. Aside from that, it makes me think of Christmas With the Kranks, [name_m]Martin[/name_m] [name_m]Luther[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] jr, [name_u]Lex[/name_u] [name_m]Luthor[/name_m], and [name_m]Luther[/name_m] Vandross!
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u] - [name_u]Huxley[/name_u] definitely feels more trendy than your other names, I’m sorry. It also makes me think of [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] [name_u]Huxley[/name_u]. I prefer the name [name_m]Huck[/name_m]!
[name_m]Castor[/name_m] - a bit too oily, yes, sorry! It also reminds me of The Hunger Games and Face/Off. I do love nn [name_m]Cas[/name_m] though!
[name_m]Howlan[/name_m] - oh, I love [name_m]Howlan[/name_m]! In Game of Thrones, there’s a character named Howland, and I’ve always thought it was a cool name. I also like [name_m]Harlan[/name_m]!
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]/Fintan/Finnian - none of these seem too trendy to me! They feel more timeless. [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is my favorite followed by [name_m]Finnian[/name_m], and then [name_m]Fintan[/name_m]. I also love [name_m]Finnick[/name_m]!
[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] - I would assume an [name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] was Russian, and I do think [name_m]Alexei[/name_m] feels more wearable. You could still technically use [name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] if you wanted to, I prefer that spelling also. [name_m]Alexei[/name_m] (either spelling) reminds me of the character from Stranger Things.
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u] - I prefer it as a middle, but it does make a nice first also. I like nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u], it feels friendly and sweet!
[name_u]Fargo[/name_u] - I’m sorry, I don’t like the sound of this one. Also it just reminds me of the movie Fargo and the bank [name_m]Wells[/name_m] [name_u]Fargo[/name_u]. Still technically usable though!
[name_u]Mars[/name_u] - love [name_u]Mars[/name_u] so much! It’s so handsome, cool, mythological, and celestial. I wouldn’t use it while your dog is around though, sorry!
[name_m]Franz[/name_m] - this is very cool and right on trend. However, I think the biggest association is probably Archduke [name_m]Franz[/name_m] [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m], so maybe not entirely usable. [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] is a nice similar name!
[name_u]Mako[/name_u] - I like both pronunciations, and it is a sweet name. I think more people might relate it to Japanese or Maori instead of the shark though.
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m] - one of my favorite names! It’s so handsome and cool, and I love nn [name_u]Vale[/name_u]. I like how futuristic it sounds. It reminds me of the character [name_m]Valerian[/name_m] from the movie, and I love that association too!
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m] “[name_m]Wells[/name_m]” - [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] does feel slightly more pretentious than other literary names, sorry! [name_f]My[/name_f] first association is, of course, [name_u]George[/name_u] [name_m]Orwell[/name_m]!
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m] - [name_m]Pavel[/name_m] is such a soft, sweet name! I don’t think it sounds boring at all. Actually, its so uncommon here that it may feel more exciting! I think the sounds are familiar enough that it doesnt feel too weird at all.
[name_m]Bear[/name_m] - I love [name_m]Bear[/name_m] so much! It reminds me of [name_m]Bear[/name_m] McCreary (who does the music for The Walking Dead, amongst other things), and he seems to wear it well! It is a bit trendy though, but not too trendy to me.
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u] - maybe in my top 5 boy names, I just love it too much! I think it works as both a first and middle. Also, it seems very masculine and handsome to me (although I don’t personally think it sounding feminine would be a bad thing anyway!). I first heard the name as a first on [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] PenaVega (son of actors [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] PenaVega and [name_m]Carlos[/name_m] PenaVega), and fell in love! It also seems to fit right in with other currently popular word names!
[name_m]Koa[/name_m] - doesnt feel girly at all, in fact it feels very masculine to me! I love how soft and sweet it is, while still having some hidden strength.
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] - another name I love a lot! I personally prefer it as a middle, but would love to meet someone named [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]! I love that its both celestial and mythological too!!

Sorry, most of them are too out-there for me. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites, though, are:

  • Hector
  • Wilder
  • Castor
  • Franz

Names that I like and that I think are usable:
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m]
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m]
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m] - I think [name_m]Cas[/name_m] is a great nn but if you want to use [name_m]Casper[/name_m], go for [name_m]Casper[/name_m]!
[name_u]Finch[/name_u]
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]
[name_m]Grover[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] - I think it’s okay for everyone to use but am not totally sure!
[name_u]Oleander[/name_u]
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]
[name_m]Franz[/name_m]
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] - as a middle!

Trendy ones I like:
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u]
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u]
[name_m]Bear[/name_m]

Not my fave for you:
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m]
[name_m]Orville[/name_m] - this is a GP of mine but the world isn’t ready for this one to make a comeback yet
[name_m]Altair[/name_m]
[name_m]Luther[/name_m]
[name_m]Castor[/name_m] - yep, too oily
[name_m]Howlan[/name_m]
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] - not as fun as your other choices though still a good name!
[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m]
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u]
[name_u]Fargo[/name_u]
[name_u]Mars[/name_u]
[name_u]Mako[/name_u]
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m]
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m] - not sure how to pronounce it?
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u]
[name_m]Koa[/name_m]

I’ll be the voice of dissent — these names are too out there. They’re all either obscure last names or the sounds and associations are unappealing.

Callum is one I would suggest for you!

[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m]- [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] sounds very unusual to me. [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] is okay, but it reminds me of [name_m]Iggy[/name_m] [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] and “piggy”

[name_m]Roswell[/name_m]- pronounced [name_f]Roz[/name_f]-well or [name_f]Ross name_f]-well? I’ve never seen the name before, but [name_m]Wells[/name_m] is a nice nickname!

[name_m]Casimir[/name_m]- I actually grew up with a [name_f]Kasmir[/name_f], pronounced the same way. He went by Kaz. No one ever batted an eye about it. Sounds like [name_m]Cash[/name_m], which is already widely accepted.

[name_m]Mircea[/name_m]- I’ve never heard of this one, and I wouldn’t know how to pronounce it without someone telling me.

[name_u]Finch[/name_u] - I’m not a fan of this one. Sounds harsh and too closely tied to To Kill a Mockingbird.

[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]- Actually…I really like this one! I’m suprised by how much I like it! It reminds me of [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m], which is another cool name. The letter Z is in style right now.

[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]- [name_m]Mozart[/name_m] is my first thought. I’m not a fan of “gang” at the end.

[name_m]Orville[/name_m]- I thought of the popcorn guy first, the “then my name isn’t [name_m]Orville[/name_m] Redenbacher” or whatever he says.

[name_m]Grover[/name_m]- I don’t know if I can get past the sesame street association.

[name_m]Hector[/name_m]- This might be strange to use if neither parent is Hispanic.

[name_u]Wilder[/name_u]- this is pretty trendy right now, but that’s okay.

[name_u]Oleander[/name_u]- I kinda like this one. I like the nn [name_m]Anders[/name_m].

[name_m]Rosco[/name_m] sounds like the name of a dog to me

[name_m]Altair[/name_m] - how do you pronounce this one?

[name_m]Luther[/name_m]- reminds me of [name_u]Lex[/name_u] [name_m]Luther[/name_m] or [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]

[name_u]Huxley[/name_u]- to me, tied to closely to that poor kid from [name_f]China[/name_f] who was rehomed recently.

[name_m]Castor[/name_m]- I can only think of the oil. I prefer [name_m]Casper[/name_m].

[name_m]Howlan[/name_m]- sounds like howling to me

[name_u]Finley[/name_u]/ [name_m]Fintan[/name_m]/ [name_m]Finnian[/name_m]- I love all of these!!!

[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m]/ [name_m]Alexei[/name_m]- I love both of these!

[name_u]Calloway[/name_u]- I prefer [name_u]Callan[/name_u] or [name_u]Callum[/name_u].

[name_u]Fargo[/name_u]/ [name_m]Franz[/name_m]- I’m not a fan of the sound of this one.

[name_u]Mars[/name_u]/ [name_u]Mako[/name_u] - I like both of these.

[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]- not a fan

[name_m]Orwell[/name_m]/ [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]- Unfortunately, I actually do agree with what you said. That these names do sound “well-read” and pretentious to me, since they are tied to classics.

[name_m]Pavel[/name_m]- how is this one pronounced?

[name_m]Bear[/name_m]- I love this one! Especially as a nickname for [name_u]Barrett[/name_u]

[name_u]Ocean[/name_u]- I like this one. I prefer the sound of [name_u]River[/name_u].

[name_m]Koa[/name_m]- sounds like [name_u]Noah[/name_u]. I think it could work.

[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]- I’m not a fan of the sound of this one.

all of them are totally usable!

Zigmund nn [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] is really cool. I wouln’t worry about what family says.

Roswell nn [name_m]Wells[/name_m] is also really cool

Casimir - strong, cool name! [name_m]Casper[/name_m] can definitely be a nn but to me it feels like a separate name. I prefer [name_m]Cas[/name_m]. In the US, unfortunately I think a lot of people would prn it as [name_u]Cass[/name_u]-eh-meer

I like [name_m]Mircea[/name_m] but I think you would get the same prn issues in the US

I like [name_u]Finch[/name_u] as a more unique alternative to [name_u]Finn[/name_u]!

Lazslo is a fine name, but nms

Wolfgang is a guilty pleasure of mine, there’s nothing wrong with it but the word “gang” in a name definitely makes me hesitate. but I can’t deny that it’s really cool.

The sesame street association is too strong for me with [name_m]Grover[/name_m], but that could be cause I’m surrounded by many kids all day long. But it’s not unusable, and [name_m]Grover[/name_m] is an adorable character lol

Lol, I ran out of time on the rest of the list, but I like [name_u]Wilder[/name_u], [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], [name_u]Mars[/name_u], [name_m]Franz[/name_m], [name_u]Mako[/name_u], and [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], and I LOVE [name_u]Calloway[/name_u] and [name_m]Valerian[/name_m]!

I love [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] and personally [name_m]Lazlo[/name_m] just looks off to me. I think of all of your names this one strikes the best balance between being uncommon or a even quirky while still being very wearabke and is definitely no an embarrassing name.

Oleander is another one here that strikes a good cord. It’s a personal favorite of mine, my #2 pick for another boy.

Others on your list that I think are highly wearable options
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] (I’ve always love this name! And with the relative use of Wollf as a given name these days wouldn’t be that out of place at all)
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m] (I think this would be such a great honor name! I tend to like honors in the middle but this is a perfextly usable first nsme option)
[name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]
[name_m]Franz[/name_m]
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m] (may need to correct people sometimes as I have heard people say it caz-ih-meer before but very doable I think! [name_m]Casper[/name_m] doesn’t seem intuitive as a nn, but Caz would be a solid option!)
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]/ [name_m]Fintan[/name_m]/ [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] ([name_u]Finley[/name_u] is definitely teendy and Finnia. Seems up and coming, but I think [name_m]Fintan[/name_m] and [name_u]Finch[/name_u] are great ways to get nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and I don’t think having a fairly common nickname is a big deal.)
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m]
[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] (this name is pretty intuitive pronuciation wise and fine in the US imo, I would stick with the -sk- spelling personally.)
[name_m]Bear[/name_m] (I think this one gets a lot of buzz online and is familiar but isn’t actually that trendy or used.)
[name_m]Grover[/name_m]
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m] (I’ve worked with kids named [name_m]Octavian[/name_m], [name_u]Dorian[/name_u], [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is a top 20 name. [name_m]Valerian[/name_m] seems very doable.)
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u] (I don’t dislike but this one is quite trendy, totally wearable fn but I’d probably use it as a middle.)
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]
[name_m]Orville[/name_m]

Names that would probably be better as middles
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m] (doable as a first, but do to certain associations might be safer in the middle.)
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m]
[name_m]Altair[/name_m]
[name_m]Luther[/name_m] (very qearbale but I would put in the middle due to pop culture associations like The Umbrella Academy.)
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m] (for the reasons you mentioned, could still use [name_m]Wells[/name_m] as a nickname with [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] as a middle.)
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u] (I think your comments on [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] apply to [name_u]Huxley[/name_u] as well.)
[name_m]Castor[/name_m] (I do know a little [name_m]Castor[/name_m] though!)
[name_u]Mars[/name_u] (maaaaaaaybe, but given it’s your dog’s nn already I would probably scrap.)
[name_m]Altair[/name_m]
[name_u]Fargo[/name_u]
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u]
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u]

Names I would probably scrap
[name_u]Mako[/name_u]
[name_m]Koa[/name_m]
[name_u]Mars[/name_u]
[name_m]Howlan[/name_m] (could totally be used as a middle, I just don’t care for this name personally.)

None of them are “way too weird”! I’m here for the weird names!

Cool and sharp:
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] “[name_u]Ziggy[/name_u]”
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] “[name_u]Wolf[/name_u]”
[name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_m]Howlan[/name_m]
[name_m]Luther[/name_m]
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u]
Owell “[name_m]Wells[/name_m]”
[name_m]Bear[/name_m]
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u]

Fish out of water, but like…happy fish out of water, fish that evolved and walked out:
[name_u]Mars[/name_u]
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m] “[name_m]Wells[/name_m]”
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]
[name_m]Grover[/name_m]
[name_m]Orville[/name_m]
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m]
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]
[name_m]Franz[/name_m]
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m]
Casimiar “[name_m]Cas[/name_m]”

Trendy but for a good reason:
[name_m]Koa[/name_m]
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u]
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]
[name_u]Finch[/name_u]

Not my kind of weird, but also great:
[name_u]Fargo[/name_u]
[name_u]Mako[/name_u]
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]
[name_m]Altair[/name_m]

[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] -I like [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] and [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m] feels usable but the family association would actually put me off
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m] - i quite like this. It’s different but feels familiar and I think [name_m]Wells[/name_m] is intuitive. You might like [name_m]Rockwell[/name_m] to
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m] -It’s a nice name and i think the pn is quite intuitive.
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m] - the pn isn’t intuitive and the association would put me off
[name_u]Finch[/name_u] - [name_u]Finch[/name_u] is kind of cool but i prefer [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] or just [name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] - [name_m]Lazlo[/name_m] is excellent. It’s unique but feels in line with names like [name_u]Milo[/name_u] and [name_u]Arlo[/name_u]
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] - I find it a bit much and a bit harsh”
[name_m]Orville[/name_m] - it’s kind of cool just nms
[name_m]Grover[/name_m] - [name_m]Grover[/name_m] is quite handsome and rugged
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] - this feels quite international
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u]Wilde” - love it. It feels literary and interesting.
[name_u]Oleander[/name_u] “Oli/Andy” -distinctive and unique but easy to spell and say, plus the added bonus of familiar nicknames
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] -charming and sweet
[name_m]Altair[/name_m] -bright and bold
[name_m]Luther[/name_m] - unqiue but easy to wear
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u] - literary and funky
[name_m]Castor[/name_m] - this name feels quite celestial to me but the oil association would put me off
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]/Fintan/Finnian -I love [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] and Finleu
[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] - if you have russian heritage i think it’s usable
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u] -flowing and interesting but I prefer [name_u]Callum[/name_u] or [name_u]Callahan[/name_u]
[name_u]Fargo[/name_u] - [name_u]Fargo[/name_u] sounds a bit close to fart, sorry
[name_u]Mars[/name_u] - it might be a bit weird since it’s your dog’s nickname
[name_m]Franz[/name_m]-international and sweet
[name_u]Mako[/name_u] - since it’s a Japanese name, I’d probably stick with the Japanese pn, so I’d say no to this pne
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m] -cool and bold
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m] -I love [name_m]Orwell[/name_m] and would just assume you liked literature
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m] - a nice honour
[name_m]Bear[/name_m] - I prefer [name_m]Orson[/name_m] (meaning [name_m]Bear[/name_m]) but [name_m]Bear[/name_m] is wearable -strong yet cosy
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u] - I love [name_u]Ocean[/name_u]. Bold and bright
[name_m]Koa[/name_m] - i love the gentle [name_m]Koa[/name_m]
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] -I’d probably keep it as a middle name but it is usable

I think all of the names are unique but recognizable, strong and sturdy. None of them jumped out at me as pretentious and the only one I thought might be a little too out there for actual use is [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]

My favourites are:
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m] and [name_m]Orwell[/name_m]
[name_u]Finch[/name_u]
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m]- love the family connection
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u]

I know 2 little guys names [name_m]Bear[/name_m]

Huxley does stand out to me as a different style or theme than the rest

Zigmund “[name_u]Ziggy[/name_u]/Zig”- I love this one (especially since it’s an honor name)! [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] is a great nickname.
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m] “[name_m]Wells[/name_m]”- I love the reason you like this one. [name_m]Wells[/name_m] is one of my favorite names.
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m]- I pronounce it a bit differently but I really like it! It’s another one of my favorites. It’s such a cool guy name.
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m]- not my fave but it’s wearable
[name_u]Finch[/name_u]- I love [name_u]Finch[/name_u]! It’s so cute.
Lazslo- Yet another favorite of mine. So cool!

Zigmund- this is cool, and [name_u]Ziggy[/name_u] also has a really cool and crisp vibe.
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this, with nn [name_m]Wells[/name_m] especially.
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m]- I think this one is useable, but the pronunciation wasn’t intuitive, I thought it was [name_m]Cas[/name_m]-i-MEER.
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m]- this is one of the least usable ones on your list for me personally. The pronunciation is difficult from the spelling and just feels like it it would be a lot of hassle in everyday life.
[name_u]Finch[/name_u]- Really cool and definitely fits in the nature trends.
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]- I think both are equally as useable, though [name_m]Lazlo[/name_m] is slightly easier.
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]- This is neat as well, handsome yet quirky.
[name_m]Orville[/name_m]- I’m not sure if this is ready for a revival yet, but it has such a sweet sound.
[name_m]Grover[/name_m]- again, not sure if ready for a revival.
[name_m]Hector[/name_m]- I think [name_m]Hector[/name_m] is lovely and can work for anyone
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u]- i think this is trendy, but I understand the appeal
[name_u]Oleander[/name_u]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this, one my of favorites from the list!
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] - Another cool vibe name, very handsome!
[name_m]Altair[/name_m]- This is cool, but I can see this getting confused for many different names, such as [name_u]Adair[/name_u], which may cause extra hassle.
[name_m]Luther[/name_m]- I have a soft spot for this and adore it!
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u]- Trendy and will be dated in 20 years
[name_m]Castor[/name_m]- Sadly, too oily, much prefer [name_m]Casper[/name_m] or [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]
[name_m]Howlan[/name_m]- I don’t think this is too trendy, but on trend
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]/Fintan/Finnian- I think [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is pushing trendy but the rest are not
[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m]- This spelling may be very difficult to use in the US like [name_m]Mircea[/name_m]. [name_m]Alexei[/name_m] would work better but still gives a heavy European vibe like [name_m]Mircea[/name_m].
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u]- this is really handsome!
[name_u]Fargo[/name_u]- I see the appeal, but naf
[name_u]Mars[/name_u]- [name_m]Leave[/name_m] this for the pup
[name_m]Franz[/name_m]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this!
[name_u]Mako[/name_u]- I assumed this was pronouced [name_f]May[/name_f]-ko like the shark.
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]- This is such a cool, bold name. I love this!
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m]- I really love this too, probably more than [name_m]Roswell[/name_m] nn [name_m]Wells[/name_m]!
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m]- I like this but doesn’t have the shine as some of the other names on the list
[name_m]Bear[/name_m]- Middle name territory
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u]- middle name territory
[name_m]Koa[/name_m]- This is very masculine to me, but the only [name_m]Koa[/name_m] I know in real life is Hawaiian.
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]- middle name territory

Overall most of them are usable, but some are easier to wear than others.

I work for a school district, so I spend a lot of time looking at class rosters! If I saw these names on one of my class lists, this is what I would think.

wouldn’t even bat an eye
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u]
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]/Fintan/Finnian “[name_u]Finn[/name_u]”
[name_m]Koa[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] - I’d be more surprised if the child wasn’t Hispanic, but even then it’s not weird.
[name_u]Huxley[/name_u] - I know a young [name_u]Huxley[/name_u], so it seems less weird to me than it probably does for most people. But I also think he fits right in with all kind of trendy sounds, so wouldn’t necessarily stand out on a roster, even if I hadn’t seen it before.

“Oh, I never see this name and I love it!”
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m] - I know a little [name_m]Kazimir[/name_m] who goes by Kaz and it works well.
[name_u]Finch[/name_u]
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]
[name_u]Oleander[/name_u]
[name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] - Again, I would only think this was odd if the family weren’t Russian. I went to college with an [name_m]Aleksei[/name_m] and most people called him [name_u]Alex[/name_u].

“This is odd, but I kind of like it.”
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m]
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]
[name_m]Luther[/name_m]
[name_u]Calloway[/name_u]
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u]
[name_m]Pavel[/name_m]
[name_u]Mako[/name_u]

“Not my favorite.”
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]
[name_m]Orville[/name_m]
[name_m]Altair[/name_m]
[name_m]Castor[/name_m]
[name_m]Howlan[/name_m]
[name_u]Mars[/name_u]
[name_m]Bear[/name_m]
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]
[name_m]Franz[/name_m]
[name_m]Orwell[/name_m]

“Oh no, why?!”
[name_m]Mircea[/name_m] - Mostly because I’d have no idea how to pronounce it. Once I learned the pronunciation, I think I’d kind of like it.
[name_m]Roswell[/name_m], [name_m]Grover[/name_m], [name_u]Fargo[/name_u], [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] - The associations are too strong, would lead to teasing, and the last two just don’t sound like first names.
