[name]How[/name] would you pronounce [name]Kaila[/name], right off the bat?
The hubs REALLY likes the name [name]Kaila[/name]. It represents [name]Hawaii[/name] with the “[name]Kai[/name]” beginning. I’m not too excited about it yet, but warming up to it. One of the things holding me back is that I think people will say “[name]Kayla[/name]” instead of “[name]Kai[/name]-la”. I know the other spelling of “[name]Kyla[/name]” might be less confusing, but then it wouldn’t represent [name]Hawaii[/name].
So my question is…how would your pronounce [name]Kaila[/name], right off the bat?
I’m sad to say that my first instict was to pronounce [name]Kaila[/name] as kay-la, because I went to camp with a [name]Kaila[/name] (kay-la) who spelled her name this way.
If it were [name]Kai[/name], just [name]Kai[/name], I would have pronounced it correctly, but when I see “kail,” I pronounce it to rhyme with “jail.” (Now that I know the Hawaiian pronunciation, it’s easy to switch to [name]Kai[/name]-la.)
If you’re worried about pronunciation though, you may also like [name]Isla[/name], which has the same ending sound as [name]Kaila[/name].
We loved “[name]Isla[/name]”, but threw it out due to pronunciation problems. I know everyone keeps saying that it won’t have very many once it catches on in the US, but I’ve polled my friends and had my friends ask their friends. Most people in the US pronounce it “Iz-la”. Darn spanish influence here.
I also have a DD named “[name]Lilia[/name]” (lily-uh) and “[name]Isla[/name]” might be too close for comfort. I still have yet to figure that out.
My name is [name]Kaila[/name], but is said [name]Kayla[/name]. You would actually be really surprised how many times I get called [name]Kyla[/name] instead of [name]Kayla[/name]. Throughout my schooling I had to correct people!
Sorry, I’d say it kay-la. [name]Kaila[/name] and [name]Kayla[/name] are used interchangeably as equally legit spellings in Yiddish and that’s the context I’m used to it in. I’m from [name]East[/name] Coast USA so the Jewish version happens more than a Hawaiian version.
I have a friend named this, I believe with the intention of being called ‘[name]Kai[/name]-la’, but after so many people pronounced it [name]Kayla[/name], her mom went with it and now [name]Kaila[/name] is ‘[name]Kayla[/name]’ for her.
It’s already caught on in the US. In 2011, it was ranked #268 and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it higher when the 2012 list comes out.
All of the [name]Isla[/name]'s I know do pronounce it eye-la.
Anyways, as for [name]Kaila[/name], I’d pronounce it [name]Kaila[/name]. I’ve actually known someone with this spelling and she pronounced it like [name]Kayla[/name].
I first pronounced it [name_u]KAI[/name_u]-la and I really love this name! I don’t think there would be too many pronunciation issues, and [name_f]Kaila[/name_f] has been one of my favorite names for a while!
