Kain and Killian

Revisiting one of many story ideas that I used the names Invictus and Victarion for, then dropped when I decided I couldn’t use those names. I may or may not have written about this concept on Nameberry before. I remember doing so, but I can’t find the thread, so I’m not totally sure. Here’s the context of the story.

Twin Gods

The concept is these twin gods, Aristide and Sileo, who are opposed to one another for some reason, it’s not like a conflict of domains, it’s more a petty duel, but they’re gods, so they believe it’s the most important thing to ever happen. Either way, both of these twin gods end up dying in this duel and end up reincarnating themselves into the bodies of twin boys.

Twin Boys

These two boys, Kain and Killian, grow up with this massive, unexplained sibling rivalry, which in actuality, is caused by the opposition of these two gods trapped inside them. Either way, Aristide chose Kain, and Sileo chose Killian, and each of them influenced their parents to name the two boys those names.

The Plot

Towards the end of the story, these two gods decide that now is the time to duke it out using these two young men as vessels. When Kain and Killian discover what Aristide and Sileo are planning, they have to find a way to defeat the gods, and get their bodies back, so they don’t both die, and they can have the brotherly love they never got to share as children.

My major concerns are as follows.

First Names

Obviously, one would have to be very bold to name one of their twin sons Kain, and even bolder to name the other Killian. My in plot reason for that is that the parents were subconsciously influenced by the two gods to name their sons that. I just worry that it’s still too cheesy?

Surname

I put up a poll in the Quick Poll Thread, asking about surnames for these two. The options were Somerville, Napier, Reinier, Friery, and Linnington. So far, Somerville is winning. It’s my favourite out of these, so I’m okay with it, but I’m not completely sold. If you have other suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

God Names

This world is basically like Earth with a bit of magic, and a group of gods running the place. Though it isn’t actually our Earth. Obviously Aristide and Sileo are two of them, but the rest need names too. If you have suggestions, I’d love to hear those too.

Siblings

I’m not sure about adding siblings to the mix. I think it could be interesting, but I also don’t want to overwhelm the actual plot by adding other characters. It could add another layer of stress, because not only do their parents have to struggle through the twins division, but their siblings would have to as well. However, the plot survives even without other siblings. Thoughts?

Any other things you notice, as far as plot, story, and names, I’d love to hear it. Please answer kindly. Thanks in advance.

First Names

I think they’re fine, especially if the gods have quite dramatic personalities.

Surname

I voted for Somerville! I quite like the sound of it with both their names - [name_m]Killian[/name_m] Somerville is maybe a slight mouthful though? A two-syllable name may work better, possibly something like…

Siblings

I feel like the idea of the twins trying to overcome their rivalry and have a real relationship is stronger without throwing other siblings into the mix - it’s not that uncommon for people to have a bad relationship with one sibling and still get on with the others, so I think adding other siblings could potentially weaken the emotional effect? It depends how you approach it, that’s just my initial thought.
