Kaj

Thinking about trying out the name Kaj on myself. I just don’t want all of the mispronunciations coming my way, and also don’t want to put the pronunciation next to the name everywhere. I love the name, but not all the stress about pronunciation that may come with it. Should I go for it and try it out, or just stick to my current name/look for another? (I don’t like Kai / Kye / any other spelling)

I’ll be honest, I assumed this was pronounced ‘kahj’ until I saw you compare it to Kai/Kye. I don’t think it would be too much trouble to correct people because it’s so visually similar to [name_u]Kai[/name_u], they should catch on quickly. But if you live somewhere where the name isn’t well known and you don’t want to have to correct people, I worry it might be difficult.

That said, I think [name_u]Kaj[/name_u] is very cool!

The name and meaning are cool but if you live in the US you are likely to get “kahj” 99% of the time people see it and everyone will assume it’s spelled [name_u]Kai[/name_u] when you tell them.

I do think people would mispronounce it, if I’m honest, but I’d also say you’ve got nothing to lose with at least trying it out if you’re liking it

Kaj is my favorite spelling; there’s something so sparkly about the j! I do think it would be difficult with pronunciation especially since the j looks so similar to the i so people might assume it’s Kai — but I think with any name there’s that risk; I know people with names in the top 10 who constantly have them confused, mispronounced, & misspelled

My first instinct was to pronounce it kahz (like a french J) so I do think it could be a bit bothersome. Since you’ve said you don’t want to have to deal with pronunciation issues and corrections I wouldn’t go for it.

I think it will be mispronounced with the hard “J” sound a lot when people read it for the first time. I would only recommend it if you don’t mind correcting the pronunciation.

seems too tricky to me, but there’s no harm in trying it out!
