Kamal or Kamaal?

My husband and I met at a concert headlining A Tribe Called [name]Quest[/name], one of his favorite groups, whose lead member’s real name is [name]Kamaal[/name]. He is extremely picky about names, but he really likes this one. I like the sound too, but I prefer the spelling [name]Kamal[/name], as I think [name]Kamaal[/name] is too suggestive of the name’s Islam origin (we’re christian) and too ethnically specific sounding for a white, jamaican-and-haitian-american kid. What do you think? Is “[name]Kamaal[/name]” appropriate sounding for us or should we stick with the safer spelling? (if we use the name at all)

Is it supposed to be pronounced like [name]Jamal[/name] but with a K? I immediately think of camels when I see the name.

Lol yes, like jamal with a k

I prefer the [name]Kamal[/name] spelling over [name]Kamaal[/name], since the extra “a” doesn’t add anything to the pronunciation. I actually like [name]Kemal[/name] (which surprisingly doesn’t have a nameberry entry) the best, although that may be going too far from the original namesake for you and your husband.

I prefer the [name]Kamal[/name] spelling.

I prefer [name]Kamal[/name]. I know a few men with the name and they all use that spelling. I don’t think you would have a real problem with people thinking/saying “camel.” As far as I know the meaning is “perfection.”
