If you were considering using this for a first name which would you go with if you were going to be using both names interchangeably? Meaning you’d call her [name_f]Kate[/name_f] sometimes and [name_f]Katie[/name_f] most other times? I’m leaning towards [name_f]Kate[/name_f] since it would possibly sound better as a grown woman’s name if she needed to put it on an official form, but could still go by [name_f]Katie[/name_f].
And would it change your opinion if her mns would possibly be:
Also final question would it be weird for a child if she grew up knowing her mom and grandmother used to have a cat named [name_f]Kate[/name_f]?
I almost feel silly about this post since I’m not pregnant again yet, and if I was we already have names picked out for the next girl (if we ever have another girl), lol, but I do like to think about names!
[name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] somehow makes me think of the Duchess [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_u]Windsor[/name_u]. I wouldn’t worry about the name or the cat! [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Katie[/name_f] are both lovely, not so keen on [name_f]Katy[/name_f].
Agreed: [name_f]Kate[/name_f], with [name_f]Katie[/name_f] as a nickname when she’s a kid. When she’s an adult she can use [name_f]Katie[/name_f] if she likes, but for official purposes she’s [name_f]Kate[/name_f].
[name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Karis[/name_f] is my favorite. [name_u]Winter[/name_u] make such a nice middle name.
The pet name thing comes up a lot! It’s all about how you spin it. I’d make it part of her “name story” from early on so she doesn’t find out later and get offended. Make sure she knows she wasn’t “named after the cat.” Instead bring up how much you always loved the name, what warm feelings you’ve always had toward it, and how happy you were to have a little girl to use it on.
I personally prefer [name_f]Kate[/name_f] but not for the reasons you have stated. If you prefer [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and this is what she will be called 50%+ of the time then there is no point in calling her [name_f]Kate[/name_f] for the sake of formality. The world is changing. Nicknames haven’t harmed the British people but it seems the Americans are terrified of them. [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/[name_f]Katie[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] would be your best option for middle names.
@isoleith I like what you said about how to spin it. Our cat [name_f]Kate[/name_f] was the best cat I’ve ever owned anyway. Fond memories of her. I’ve loved the name for years just hadn’t really seriously considered it to name one of our children until recently.
I like [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Karis[/name_f] too, but I’m sort of deciding if I would want to continue the theme dh and I have going for the first mn. Our dd’s first mn is after my mom, dh’s girl name first mn is after his, [name_f]Renee[/name_f] would be after my mn. BUT [name_u]Winter[/name_u] would break the theme and give more freedom if there were more girl names to pick down the road. Plus at one point in time dh liked [name_u]Winter[/name_u] for a mn, but since he changed his mind on his girl name I thought it might be cool to use it for him.
