I was surprised to see Nameberry list [name]Kieran[/name] as a unisex name. Has anyone ever seen [name]Kieran[/name] on a girl?
I’ve seen [name]Kiernan[/name] on a girl, but never [name]Kieran[/name]. I can see it working on both though, even though its NMSAA.
I saw a tv special with quintuplets or sextuplets or something like that, and one of the girls was [name]Kieran[/name]. The whole family was pretty poorly-named, in my opinion. I believe there was also an Irelynd.
I never have, but I could see it working. [name]Kiera[/name] is a girls’ name. Why not [name]Kieran[/name]? I kind of like it even.
I have never heard of it being on a girl, and I’m totally against it. We don’t need more boy names going to the girls. Maybe it’s just me, but I think this “boys names for girls” trend is really getting out of hand.

I agree 110%. I hate that one of my fav boy names, [name]Elliott[/name], is now being used for girls.
One of my co-workers has a niece named [name]Zachary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. [name]Zachary[/name].
I just don’t get it.
[name]Zachary[/name]!? On a girl!? Okay, with something less “American sounding” like [name]Kieran[/name] I can kind of see where people would see it as potential as a girl name, but [name]Zachary[/name]…! I’m lost here on that one.
No not an option imo but Kirin or [name]Kiran[/name] would be okay or even [name]Kerry[/name] [name]Anne[/name].
Unfortunately, I have seen it on a girl. [name]Even[/name] more unfortunately, her mother pronounces it key [name]AIR[/name] in.
[name]Kiran[/name] is a legitimate [name]Indian[/name] name used for both boys and girls.
[name]KIRAN[/name]
Gender: Masculine & Feminine
Usage: [name]Indian[/name]
Other Scripts: ??? (Hindi)
Derived from the Sanskrit word ??? (kirana), which can mean “dust” or “thread” or “sunbeam”.
But [name]Kieran[/name]? No. Not a girl’s name. I really like [name]Ciaran[/name] (pronounced the same way) on a boy, though.
The first time I heard this name it was on a girl. It looks a lot like [name]Karen[/name] or [name]Lauren[/name] or [name]Megan[/name].
[name]Keiran[/name] might be the same as [name]Karen[/name] to some, and that’s why some might think its unisex. I would stick to [name]Keira[/name] for girls.
I was about to comment on the [name]Karen[/name] thing. I also think anything that looks Celtic/Gaelic and remotely like a surname is bound to be considered a feminine name in the US at least some of the time. Not saying I support it, but that that’s the process.
Simply amazed that you could equate [name]Karen[/name] and [name]Kieran[/name].
rollo
Equate is a strong word! But associate is a fair enough word. It’s the same consonant structure, just swapping vowels. I’ll bet too, depending on where you are in the Anglosphere, the vowels might be less different for some people. It’s certainly a weak association, which is why I didn’t say it earlier. But I can imagine it being stronger for people who are more sensitive to sounds than to name histories. I also think this stuff doesn’t always really work on a conscious level. People might not look at [name]Kieran[/name] and say “oh, [name]Karen[/name],” but I bet some people feel “[name]Kieran[/name], that could be a girls name” because of [name]Karen[/name] without really thinking about it. Certainly more consciously because of [name]Keira[/name] et al.
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Kieran[/name] on a girl, I think it totally works.
I could definitely see people looking at [name]Kieran[/name] as a girl’s name, with all those [name]Kiera[/name]/[name]Kiersten[/name]/[name]Karen[/name]'s it’s not too much of a leap. And though I’m not opposed to unisex name’s on girls, I really would prefer if [name]Kieran[/name] stayed on the boys side
I know of a girl named [name]Kieran[/name]. I also know one named [name]Aidan[/name]. I think [name]Kieran[/name] works fine for a girl. [name]Aidan[/name], I’m not so sure about.
I am really surprised that four of you have said that you’ve actually seen it used on a girl. I guess it is becoming unisex then, especially with some others saying they like it too. Now I’m even losing my middle name to the girls LOL! I am certainly going to have to follow this one over the next few years.
Hmmm
Never thought of this one before. But this would make a great alternative to my name [name]Karen[/name]! It does sound very similar to my name. In fact, I’ve actually heard my husband pronounce my name very similarly to [name]Kieran[/name]… I just asked him about it. He was confused that it was a boys name. He was even against it being a boys name. So, Im going to have to side that way too. I’m normally against it like everyone else with a few exceptions. But this one is too close to my girl- only -name for me to like it for a boy despite history. Sorry guys.
