The movie of [name_m]Rudyard[/name_m] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]’s book of the same name was on television over the weekend. I like both [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_u]Kim[/name_u] for boys. [name_u]Kit[/name_u] is more often seen as a nickname or as a diminutive for, e.g. [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. But what about [name_u]Kim[/name_u]? Does it stand better on its own, or does it need to be a long form, like [name_m]Kimball[/name_m]? Would anyone dare use [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], or is that too far?
To be honest, I think [name_u]Kim[/name_u]/Kimberly is too common a woman’s name to be usable for a boy. [name_f]My[/name_f] main association is [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my opinion. I think [name_m]Kimball[/name_m] NM [name_u]Kim[/name_u] would be fine though.
I like the idea of [name_u]Kim[/name_u] on a boy. While I like the idea of it being a nickname, I’m not a fan of [name_m]Kimball[/name_m]. [name_m]Joachim[/name_m] is the only potential alternative that comes to mind.
I love [name_u]Kit[/name_u], and can imagine [name_u]Kim[/name_u] working on a boy. I think it might be better as a nickname. If it’s usable for you, I like [name_m]Eliakim[/name_m]! [name_m]Joachim[/name_m] is a nice suggestion too!!
[name_m]Kimball[/name_m]/Kimble isn’t personally my style, but it could work! Or perhaps a first that starts with [name_f]Ki[/name_f] and a middle that starts with M? Like [name_u]Kit[/name_u] [name_u]Maxwell[/name_u] or [name_u]Killian[/name_u] [name_u]Milo[/name_u] for example (those were just the first names that popped into my head)!
I’m not sure about this one. I don’t care for [name_m]Kimball[/name_m], and I actually quite like the idea of [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] for a boy, but it might have too many feminine associations.
@may.rose That’s actually exactly how I feel. I really don’t like Kimball. I can see Kim working on it’s own, but I do agree with @choupette that the Kardashian link could be too strong. Kimberly is the more preferable option as a name, but it does seem much more feminine.
I was thinking how it would be nice if there were a more masculine association to Kimberly.
Kay is another 3 letter K name and there is the Arthurian Sir Kay for that one.
My best friend’s father was a [name_u]Kim[/name_u]. He was named after a little Korean boy that his dad met during the Korean war. It worked well on him and I rarely questioned the unusualness of the name for a man.
Cymry and Cymru, I think pronounced “Kimre” (and maybe “kimry?”). Welsh name meaning “Welsh”.
I know of a couple of male Kims, one in his 50s and another who’d be mid-20s now. Younger [name_u]Kim[/name_u] is of Scandinavian heritage so not sure if that would make a difference to usability. It’s one of those names I’d love to see the boys reclaim.
i love the name elikai. has a similar vibe for me
pellegrino. idk why i thought of that name but it has a similar vibe to kim too lol
I like [name_u]Kim[/name_u]!
There’s a great Danish actor called [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Bodnia, who you might recognise from The Killing, The [name_m]Bridge[/name_m] and Killing [name_f]Eve[/name_f] (and if not, all are well worth a watch!)
It’s simple, solid, fresh and friendly sounding.
I met a little boy named [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] at my old job. He was legit, the sweetest, most well mannered little boy. The called him “[name_f]Kimber[/name_f]” for short.
Sorry, I just can’t see [name_u]Kim[/name_u] on a boy at all. I know a lot of Kims (all female) and the associations with [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian and [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Jong-Un would be off-putting for me. [name_u]Kit[/name_u], on the other hand, is amazing!
It’s not something I would personally use, but really like to see with someone else. There are a few unisex names that err on the feminine side that I do like /would use for boys [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] and [name_u]Casey[/name_u] for example.
Kimball / [name_m]Kimbell[/name_m]
[name_m]Kimo[/name_m]
[name_u]Kim[/name_u] [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] is the singer of patio lanterns and he rocks his name so it is definitely doable
I know a male [name_u]Kim[/name_u] and [name_u]Kit[/name_u]. The [name_u]Kim[/name_u] had full name [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] I think.
Also surprised when I meet a male [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] or [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] (other than [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] [name_m]Freeman[/name_m] I don’t see this name much on boys).
I like them all!
@rebekah83 I really like [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] as a boy’s name, much more so than for a girl - glad to see I’m not the only one preferring it that way!
I used to date a boy called just [name_u]Kim[/name_u], named after the book (he would be about 35 now). He hated it and changed his name while we were together to one that resembled his last name and took my last name funnily enough. As far as I know he still goes by the name he chose and my last name
