What are some thoughts on the name [name]Kirby[/name]? Either as a first name or middle name? My SO brought it up the other day, he thinks it would make a cool middle name and I kinda like it although I’m a bit more adventuous and would be willing to use it as a first name. I was just seeing if anyone has had any “real life” experience with the name and some general opinions on it.
[name]Kirby[/name] is the name of a popular video game (I think in more than one country) which would make this name unusable to me.
I’m afraid the only thing that comes to my mind when I hear [name]Kirby[/name] is the big, pink video game character thetxbelle mentioned. Because of that, I prefer it as a middle name or a pet’s name.
My only real life experience with [name]Kirby[/name] was a parakeet. “[name]Kirby[/name] [name]Bird[/name], [name]Kirby[/name] [name]Bird[/name]…”
Maybe as a nickname for a K name: [name]Katherine[/name] or [name]Kieran[/name] on the girls side, or I see [name]Killian[/name] in your sig, I could totally see a little [name]Killian[/name] going by [name]Kirby[/name], especially if he had a B middle name. What about [name]Kinsley[/name] for a similar sound/feel?
I also think about the video game character. I have met a girl named [name]Kirby[/name] in real life, though. She was awful, so that didn’t improve anything.
I know two [name]Kirby[/name]'s- father and son. The sibset is [name]Karson[/name], Kaylem and [name]Kirby[/name]. It seems to work well for them.
I also immediately think of the cartoon/video game character and a girl I met in band camp once who was awful.
I would keep it in the middle or a pet.
I know a [name]Kirby[/name]. He’s a really nice kid (ok, he’s like 20 but he’s a kid to me, haha). I live in MN so my first association is the baseball player [name]Kirby[/name] Puckett. He was my favorite as a kid! I think it’s a good association (minus some not so wonderful things that happened after he stopped playing baseball).
There IS the video game character, but that isn’t my first thought personally. FWIW [name]Kirby[/name] IS my favorite to play when I’m playing Smash Bros… haha.
I actually really like the name [name]Kirby[/name] and would probably use it if I could get my BF to agree to it, haha. I had a friend in high schol whose last name was [name]Kirby[/name] and it went by that because of football. It always seemed really cool to me.

I quite like it, but then I’m not familiar with this game everyone’s talking about. I’ve never met anyone with this name.
My sister’s ln is [name]Derby[/name] and when she was pregnant with her son we joked that if she named him [name]Kirby[/name], he’d be [name]Kirby[/name] [name]Derby[/name]. That kinda ruined the name for me! Sorry. I don’t think it’d be bad as long as it didn’t rhyme with the ln, though. I would only use it as a mn, as it sounds more like a nickname to me, regardless.
I don’t like it. Sounds like a brand of vacuum cleaner to me. Actually, it is! I just googled it. It’s a vacuum cleaner alright.
I, too, thought of vacuum cleaners. They are expensive vacuum cleaners that used to be sold by door-to-door salesmen. Because of that, I have a hard time imagining [name]Kirby[/name] as a first name. I must be really old because I had never heard of the video game reference!
My first thought is “comic book”, but that doesn’t turn me off it.
I went to high school with a male [name]Kirby[/name]. From personal experiencing knowing someone with this name… I would never recommend anyone use it, at all. It was hard to take him seriously because of his name.
My name is [name]Kirby[/name]. I am a female in my 20s. I have always really liked my name (lots of people in my part of the US are [name]Kirby[/name] Pucket fans … a 1980-90s baseball player - so that is a common reference). I have loved that I am one of 2 people in my town (60,000 people) named [name]Kirby[/name]… At least that I’ve heard of. In general, people dont spell or say it wrong… which is nice. When I tell people my name for the first time many people mention the video game or the baseball player. Sometimes a vacuum. I have never been teased B/c of my name. I think it is an uncommon enough name that the person who wears it dictates peoples opinions about it. I love it for a boy Mn. I wouldn’t suggest it to any modern parents who are looking for a girl name though. My name on paper just looks too masculine. In the era of [name]Kelly[/name], [name]Callie[/name], [name]Kayla[/name]… [name]Kirby[/name] fit right in for a girl… not now though.
O… and @pippi777… my family nn was [name]Kirby[/name] derby. Lol
I also think of the video game- my younger brother has one for the Wii and I find it very annoying. I’ve never met a person named [name]Kirby[/name], and I’d applaud his parents for their bravery.

kirb - [name]Glad[/name] you didn’t take my comment offensively. (At least it didn’t seem like it!) That’s what I was getting at with the example. That it’s kinda cute as a nn, but too cutesy as a full name. [name]Glad[/name] you like it and I do think you’re right in that there are different variables that come into whether it’s used.
Where I live, there is a popular local park named [name]Kirby[/name] [name]Park[/name] that I have frequented since I was a child. Also, the surname ‘[name]Kirby[/name]’ is very familiar here, and associated with a well-to-do family from the area. I actually have genetic ties to some of the aforementioned [name]Kirby[/name] family on the maternal side of my family tree, and my Mom (also a ‘name fanatic’!) really likes the name as a first name for a girl.
I think it does work better on a female; for some reason I have always leaned toward the feminine side on this name. I personally think it’s an adorable choice for a girl that’s not too out there or popular! So cute.
