Always trying to add names to my potential baby boys list. It currently consists on [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] which we’ll use if this baby is a boy. And [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] as a potential middle name but not a first. That’s it. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband has vetoed my long time favourite [name_u]Claude[/name_u] 🥲
So, I’m always on the lookout for more names and [name_m]Euan[/name_m] has come to my attention again recently and I’m starting to really like it.
The problem I have is will Kiwi’s/New Zealanders be able to pronounce it properly? I’m British and my DH is Kiwi and we had to throw out so many potential names when we were naming our daughter because the kiwi accent pretty much pronounces all vowels as Eeee
Names that are really common in the UK are sometimes nearly none existent here. Our DD is [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] which is really common in the UK but we got a lot of “oh that’s unusual” and “wow I haven’t heard that one since my great- aunt El” etc etc. [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] is in the top 20 in the UK and not on the list at all for NZ. I haven’t actually looked up [name_m]Euan[/name_m] so I don’t know how popular that is in either country.
I’d say useable! Also [name_m]Euan[/name_m] as a potential brother to [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] sounds great. I wouldnt have any issue pronouncing [name_m]Euan[/name_m] ( I am UK) I feel like it’s one of them names once you explain the pronunciation people will get it.
There is [name_m]Ewan[/name_m]? Which might phonetically avoid this issue perhaps.
Not from [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]Zealand[/name_u] (I live in the US) but think it works! I used to know a [name_m]Euan[/name_m], and he never had any problems with it, as far as I could tell.
I’m a kiwi and wouldn’t have issues pronouncing it.
I’m surprised you get those comments with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. Maybe it depends which part of NZ (I’m in Akl). In general when you look at the stats of the top names NZ has pretty good range.
I loooove [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]
We’re in Chch so maybe that does make a difference
Yes there’s a big range in NZ names but I think perhaps they align closer to American popular names than British perhaps? Although there’s loads of the usual suspects like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_u]Oliver[/name_u] etc etc
[name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]!
American here, and this is an honest question, no shade - how do you pronounce it? Like You-an or is it an alternative spelling to [name_m]Ian[/name_m]?
I’m from ChCh too! I have no issues pronouncing it. Like [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f], I’m also surprised you get those comments with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - I know a few Eleanors myself.
Best of luck! If you love [name_m]Euan[/name_m], go for it; it is definitely usable (and cute!) [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] is also lovely!
