Eberyone complains about them but are there any you actually prefer to the original?
I prefer [name]Aimee[/name] to [name]Amy[/name], [name]Kaitlyn[/name] to [name]Caitlin[/name], [name]Allisyn[/name] to [name]Alison[/name]. Anyone else have some Krey8tiv spellings of names they like?
I don’t mind Krey8tiv spellings as long as they are long established alternative ways to spelling the traditional spelling such as [name]Ann[/name] or [name]Anne[/name]; [name]Cassandra[/name] or [name]Kassandra[/name]; [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Katherine[/name], [name]Cathryn[/name], or [name]Kathryn[/name] etc.
However, I really dislike it when people take a traditional name and completely change the original spelling such as [name]Benjamin[/name] to Bynjymyn; [name]Ashley[/name] to Acsh’[name]Leigh[/name] or in general any spelling that makes the parent look like they either can’t spell or are trying way too hard to be unique. The name will be pronounced the same anyway so [name]Benjamin[/name] and Bynjymyn will still be [name]Benjamin[/name] A. and Bynjymn C. in class, but [name]Benjamin[/name] A. won’t have to spell out his name every time.
[name]Aimee[/name] isn’t creative, it’s the proper French spelling.
I prefer [name]Averie[/name] to [name]Avery[/name] on a girl, but I’ve found that [name]Averie[/name] is a french version. So I don’t know if that counts as krey8tiv.
I also prefer [name]Lynsey[/name] to [name]Lindsay[/name], [name]Emmaleigh[/name] to [name]Emily[/name], [name]Chelsey[/name] to [name]Chelsea[/name].
I’ve always prefered [name]Rachael[/name] to [name]Rachel[/name]. I don’t know why because the spelling is counterintuitive, but I’ve always loves it. For several names I prefer a legit but less common spelling:
I’m okay with most creative spellings as long as it still looks nice and doesn’t look like it should be pronounced differently from the original.
I prefer:
[name]Kristina[/name]/[name]Kristyna[/name] to [name]Christina[/name]
[name]Kaitlyn[/name] to [name]Caitlin[/name]
[name]Hayley[/name] to [name]Hailey[/name]
[name]Lynsey[/name] to [name]Lindsay[/name] and other variants
Mostly if I prefer a different spelling it’s legitimate ([name]Juliette[/name] over [name]Juliet[/name]; [name]Elisabeth[/name] over [name]Elizabeth[/name]; [name]Emilie[/name] over [name]Emily[/name]; [name]Emilia[/name] over [name]Amelia[/name]–and, well, those are just two different names, lol), but there are two I can think of off-hand that I do prefer a trendier spelling (or have in the past): [name]Claira[/name] over [name]Clara[/name], and [name]Hayley[/name] over [name]Haley[/name]/[name]Hailey[/name] (still don’t know what the original is!). Now I prefer [name]Clara[/name] to [name]Claira[/name], but I still like [name]Hayley[/name] the best out of all the [name]Haley[/name] spellings.
I’ve never been bothered by creative spellings, really, unless it is really out there. If you want a y instead of an i or an an extra y, etc., I don’t care, I still read the name right. But if it is really mixed up, then I think it is better to stick with a non creative spelling.
For example, I like the name [name]Corinne[/name], but also like it spelled [name]Carynn[/name]. Because to me, I say “uh” instead of “or” so the a seems more clear to me than the o.
I also know someone named Lyndsi. This spelling doesn’t really bother me at all. I can still easily tell what it is supposed to be. [name]Just[/name] my opinions though!
I really don’t care as long as the name’s recognizable. Sometimes I feel for the person with the name, since it seems like it might be a headache to always have to spell.
At the same time, I have to spell my last name all the time, it’s actually not a big deal.
I don’t know that there are any truly creative spellings I prefer. There are some less common ones I prefer.
[name]Elisabeth[/name] - the s is prettier to me than the z, even though I love z. Ha! [name]Just[/name] in this name. Think it’s the liz/lizard problem.
[name]Kathryn[/name] - just like how streamlined this is.
[name]Alys[/name] - for [name]Alice[/name] - OK, I know that’s pretty out there, but its history goes back to medieval times. I like the name [name]Alice[/name] but when I look at it, my eye goes to “lice”.
And there are probably more.
I will say I sometimes like creative spellings when they tie the first name to the last name. So I normally wouldn’t love the look of [name]Jasmyne[/name] for [name]Jasmine[/name], but if she’s [name]Jasmyne[/name] Yates or something, I kind of find it intriguing, at least.
I like [name]Kristina[/name] but it’s a legitimate spelling. I usually gravitate towards the simplest & most familiar spelling.
[name]One[/name] thing that most berries will disagree with is that I prefer [name]Chavonne[/name] over [name]Sioban[/name] & [name]Ashlyn[/name] over [name]Ashling[/name] or whatever the Irish spelling is…I don’t plan on using any of these names but I prefer Americanized spellings for names like these that are confusing to the average American unless they’re family names. I think it’s best to keep it simple & wearable. [name]Seamus[/name] is really nice but no one wants to get called a sea moose!
A lot of the alternative spellings that I prefer (such as [name]Aimee[/name] to [name]Amy[/name]) are not krey8tiv, they’re legitimate alternatives. What I don’t like is when a parent ends up looking like an illiterate dumb @$$ because they were trying SO extra hard to turn a perfectly lovely name into something “unique”. If I have to SOUND out a common name, then I’m sorry, but you’re stupid. I know that sounds mean but it just irritates the he!! out of me. [name]Christine[/name] should not be Khrystyne! It does NOT look better than way and your child will have a heck of a time learning to spell it and nevermind all the times they will have to spell it out for someone else in their lives. I think [name]Kaydi[/name] looks stupid when [name]Katie[/name] is a perfectly nice name (I prefer [name]Kate[/name], but that’s not the point here). The point is [name]Brianna[/name] should not have to be sounded out because it looks like this: Breighanna.
I only like alternative spellings if they are in fact ethnic variations. Ke8tiv spelling make me cringe, especially the random Y’s and the -eigh thing. Ugh.
The ONLY one I can think of is [name]Briony[/name] / [name]Bryony[/name] - but [name]Briony[/name] has been used for a long time, so it’s not really the same thing.
I completely, wholeheartedly agree. [name]Alyvia[/name] is not any less common when you say it [name]Olivia[/name], it would also be pronounced differently. People get unhappy when I throw around the word illiterate, but if the shoe fits…
According to some stumbling a few years back, I’d learned it was french and had a different meaning. But I don’t hold much merit to it since it’s the internet after all.
@flick I so agree with you re [name]Alyvia[/name]. Not least because I have to fight the urge to say Alee-vee-ah,which comes out like a mangled Aloe vera, but the parents are obviously expecting it to be pronounced like [name]Olivia[/name] (Oh-liv-ee-ah) but with an A instead.
I prefer [name]Aimee[/name] to [name]Amy[/name],but as others have said,it’s French not kree8tiv.
I prefer [name]Hayley[/name] to [name]Hailey[/name],[name]Hailie[/name] etc (obviously!) I believe [name]Hayley[/name] is the original spelling. It’s also the only one you’re likely to see in the UK.
[name]Anne[/name] over [name]Ann[/name].
[name]Clare[/name] over [name]Claire[/name]
But those are names with long established alternatives, when it comes to names where alternatives are being made up now,I don’t like any of them. Particularly not -yn endings such as [name]Lauryn[/name] instead of [name]Lauren[/name].
I don’t mind different spellings as long as it’s established variant and doesn’t confuse the pronounciation. When I see a name spelled differently than usual I think the pronunciation is different. When I see [name]Emersyn[/name] I think “em-er-sin” instead of “em-er-sun” and I’m going to call your child “em-er-sin” because that’s the way you chose to spell it
I shouldn’t have to go back to kndergarten and sit there sounding out your kids name. Eauxlyveah is unnecessary, just spell it [name]Olivia[/name]
