If you were to hear the name Lachlan how would you assume it was spelled? I feel like there’s a most common spelling, but there’s so many variations out there I’m worried if I use the name he’ll have to spell it any time he’s telling someone his name. Is there a certain spelling you prefer?
- Lachlan
- Lochlan
- Lochlann
- Locklan
- Other I’ll type it below
Depends. How’s it pronounced?
If I heard it like “lech-lun” I’d think [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] but if I heard “loch-lun” I might think [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m]. If it’s pronounced “lock-lun” then I might write Locklan. If it’s pronounced like lach-lun (or lah-ch-lun) I’d also think [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. I might ask for the spelling (like “With an m or an n?” or something like that) because I’d never heard it before.

[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] would be my immediate thought as that’s the one I’ve encountered most, but I wouldn’t be surprised by [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m]

I’ve only ever heard/ seen [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. It’s a popular name in Australia. For better or worse, Australians don’t have as much of that simpler, phonetic spellings as the US does.

@Hannah_would_ve_been That’s an excellent point about the spelling. In my head I say it more lock-lynn which I feel like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is the most similar when saying it that way? Although [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] could make an argument too which is what started to throw me off.
@ashthedreamer and @Greyblue and @EloiseT [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] has always been the spelling I assumed too! But when I started looking into the name more [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] came up more than I expected which made me nervous there might be confusion in spelling it.

If you’re pronouncing it lock-lynn I would definitely spell it [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m]. [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] would be lack-lynn for me.
I like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. I would assume it was spelled [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] unless I was told otherwise, as I think that is the most popular spelling of the name and the traditional one. I pronounce all of those spellings the same.
I like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] spelled this way
