I’ve posted on the girl forum many times about [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. No matter how many times I ask for opinions, I am unable to choose which one I prefer. I know they are both popular, and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is trendy, but I love both the names so popularity isn’t much of a concern. I grew up with a name everyone mispronounces, and I wouldn’t want my daughter to have the same problems with her name.
That being said, I am very much so a nickname person, and it bothers me that [name_f]Ava[/name_f] doesn’t really have a nickname. I absolutely love the nickname [name_f]Evie[/name_f] for [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], but I still love [name_f]Ava[/name_f]! Maybe it’s because when I first started looking at names, my criteria was a name that began and ended in an “a”, just like my own. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] fits that perfectly!
What does everyone think?
I know exactly how you feel with mispronounced names, being a [name_u]Haley[/name_u], I was always correcting mine growing up (and still do have to!)
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] are both on our list too, as [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is a favourite of my fiancé’s and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is one I really like. When I’m between names and trying to decide, if there’s anything that bothers me about one of them, I usually pick the other name. If something about it bothers me, then it’s not “the one”, if that makes any sense?
Would you be interested in combining the two together, a la [name_f]Avalyn[/name_f]? It’s more trendy than what’s on your list, but it’s kind of the best of both worlds in terms of the two names. And then, technically, [name_f]Ava[/name_f] could be her nickname.
I don’t suppose you’d consider a long name with [name_f]Ava[/name_f] as a nickname? Sounds like you just love [name_f]Ava[/name_f] though. You could do something weird and find a long name that you like that could be a long nickname for [name_f]Ava[/name_f], or find a middle name that you could use with it, e.g. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Plum[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f].
Other than that, if you do end up having a daughter named [name_f]Ava[/name_f], and if you are a very nickname-y person, I can only imagine that you will find a nickname from somewhere. Maybe something affectionate and completely unrelated, like [name_u]Wren[/name_u] or [name_f]Moon[/name_f] or [name_u]Lisha[/name_u], for a reason that only you and the rest of her immediate family understand.
Not sure why you need a nickname? I hardly know anyone who uses one beyond age 10.
I don’t get the fascination with nicknames. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is three letters. You don’t need a nickname. Maybe have a family pet name
[name_f]Avie[/name_f] could work as a nickname for [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. You could also use a J middle name and have AJ as a nickname. I think the decision to make though is if it’s more important to you to use [name_f]Ava[/name_f] (which fits your A…a criteria) or to use a name that has a clear nickname like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (which has a nickname you love). Personally I’d choose whichever name I love more regardless of nicknames, because a girl named [name_f]Ava[/name_f] could easily have nicknames based on things other than her first name. Like [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] nn [name_u]Scout[/name_u] in To Kill a Mockingbird, for example.
@ziggy2112 I just love having a more casual name to call someone by!
@stellarevolution I like that idea of a different nickname that doesn’t sound like the name! Maybe [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] would work (a possible meaning of [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is bird related)? I was thinking about [name_f]Avie[/name_f], but I’m wondering if it sounds forced?
I am also a fan of nicknames haha
Where I live many many people use their nicknames so!
Av
A (ay)
[name_f]Avie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ave/name_f
Her initials (aka [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Jade[/name_f] = AJ etc )
I don’t think [name_f]Ava[/name_f] needs a nickname at all! I like names that don’t actually need a nickname, she might have a nickname like sweetie-pie or pumpkin or whatever you end up calling her as a baby!
I really feel you love the name [name_f]Ava[/name_f], go with your heart!
Of course it like pps have said it doesn’t need a nickname, but nicknames can be a lot of fun, and a way of showing special connection and affection.
Something separate may just click, such as Topsy or [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] or [name_f]Petal[/name_f]… or anything really. Otherwise I think [name_f]Avie[/name_f], [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] or [name_f]Vava[/name_f] could work. Otherwise, could a nickname form from her middle name, or combining the sounds of [name_f]Ava[/name_f] with the middle name?
[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is a great nickname that anyone can use regardless of the actual name. My oldest is called [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] by her dad and her name is [name_u]Clare[/name_u]! It started because we call her little brother [name_u]Jay[/name_u] (his name is [name_u]James[/name_u]) and when he was little [name_u]Clare[/name_u] would call him [name_u]Jay[/name_u] bird, once he could speak he began calling her [name_u]Clare[/name_u]-bird. He still [name_u]Jay[/name_u] and now she is [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].
