Laramie.......?

So the name [name_m]Laramie[/name_m] recently popped into my head. I’ve met one before- an awesome, beautiful girl, so I have a great association with the name. I know it’s a male name, but it sounds all girl to me. I really like it, have a middle name that goes great with it andddd it sounds awesome with our last name. Score right?!? Well I suggested it to my husband and he said it’s the name of the cigarette company in the Simpsons. I didn’t know that, but he said all the Simpsons smoke “laramie’s”. Does this connection make [name_m]Laramie[/name_m] totally off limits?

I immediately thought of the cigarettes too, but I love the [name_m]Simpson[/name_m], so maybe I’m biased. I don’t think everyone would know about the cigarettes, and if I liked the name enough, it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me personally.

I watch the Simpsons occasionally but I didn’t know about the cigarette name. I like the name [name_m]Laramie[/name_m] for a girl, I think it’s really cute. It might get annoying when people say, “Hey on the Simpsons…” when they hear [name_m]Laramie[/name_m]. But lots of people (like me) don’t remember stuff like that so I think largely it would be okay.

as Unless you have a personal connection to the place in [name_f]Wyoming[/name_f] and/or you are a heavy smoker, I would pass on [name_m]Laramie[/name_m] for first name. [name_f]Lara[/name_f] or [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] are much better choices. Other suggestions: Briony, Ellery, Romilly, Bellamy, Hadley, and Delaney.

I like [name_m]Laramie[/name_m], and the strongest association is the town in [name_f]Wyoming[/name_f]. I’d put it in a category w/[name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u], [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] and other Western-inspired names.

I didn’t remember the [name_m]Simpson[/name_m] connection but I wouldn’t use it knowing it now because of the connection to smoking. It’s pretty though.

It makes me think of [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Shepard[/name_m]. He was a young gay man who because of his homosexuality got beaten up, tied to a fence and left to die by two young men. There are several Songs about him some of them with the title ‘[name_m]Laramie[/name_m]’ because that is were it happened. For many in the LGBT community [name_m]Laramie[/name_m] stands for this horrible hate crime and I just can’t get past that association either.

I immediately thought of [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] as well, and the [name_m]Laramie[/name_m] Project. That would make it a no for me, but it does have a nice sound for a girl.

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was definitely the cigarette brand in The Simpsons.

I’ve met a girl named [name_m]Laramie[/name_m] before. And I think I prefer it for a girl, though at the time I thought of it as a strange version of [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m].
I still think of [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m], but only in that it’s more of a feminine take of the name. I didn’t even know that the cigarettes were called that, I really don’t think many people will put two and two together, and even if they do they’ll likely shrug the connection off shortly after.

Thank you for pointing this out! [name_f]IMO[/name_f] it’s completely unusable as a name.

I had not heard of the [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Shepard[/name_m] story, but if that is a connection with the town then I definitely do not want to use it as a name. Thank you berries for your honest opinions and thoughts!

I used to watch the Simpsons regularly, and I would have never made the connection, in fact, I don’t recall that at all! I do, however, think of [name_f]Wyoming[/name_f]. If you love the name, go for it, but it would be even better if you had a connection to the town

I don’t watch the Simpsons so I don’t get that reference.

All it does is remind me of [name_m]Fort[/name_m] [name_m]Laramie[/name_m]. It feels more masculine than feminine.
