I say girl but I had a close friend named [name_u]Laken[/name_u] (girl) in middle and high school, and I met a female [name_u]Larkin[/name_u] at a dance convention.

I think it’s totally useable for both boys and girls. I really like it … I had a great drama teacher in high school who’s surname was [name_u]Larkin[/name_u], so it reminds me of her.

I would assume it’s a boy, but I understand that the birdish names are usually given to girls these days, so I wouldn’t be flabbergasted if it turned out to be a girl.
Also, it makes me think of [name_m]Guy[/name_m] Fawkes because I always eat parkin cake on [name_m]Guy[/name_m] Fawkes [name_u]Day[/name_u]. I like the name quite a bit, but I’m not sure how much I’m influenced by how much I like parkin.

This one is truly unisex to me. As a pp has said, the birdlike sound of it reminds me of [name_f]Lark[/name_f], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Linnet[/name_f], [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] and other avian names, which are more commonly used for girls. But it also makes me think of the poet [name_m]Philip[/name_m] [name_u]Larkin[/name_u], who was obviously male. A cute, quirky, joyful-sounding name for either sex!

I find it unisex but I think I prefer it on a girl

I think it’s totally unisex! I think if anyone has a feeling of it towards a specific gender it’s probably because of personal associations. I would lean towards assuming it was a boy if I was pushed, but I wouldn’t at all be surprised to hear it on a girl.

This is a surname in my family tree, so I don’t really associate it with any specific gender…in this case! Something about it- maybe the “birdlike sound” or the “birds names are more often given to girls” things that others have mentioned- make it easy for me to see it on a female, but again, I can see it working regardless.

I do like the name! If it didn’t clash with our surname, I would totally use it as an honor name for one of our future kids, but it just isn’t an option for us  it has a beautiful, chipper, positive sound to it.

I voted for unisex but I would personally assume boy, only because I know a male Harkin and that is my first association.

I would assume girl, but I wouldn’t be that surprised either way.

I’ve only ever met one [name_u]Larkin[/name_u] “[name_f]Lark[/name_f]” (g), almost in her 30s, very rock band edgy. I think it is very unisex though, I can picture both boys and girls with the name. I really like it.

I named my son [name_u]Larkin[/name_u] because it is a family surname. He likes his name. It seems like a name that is more oriented to males, but many females have names that were once traditionally male.

Since it was historically a nickname for [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u], it is male to me.

I’ve only known a female [name_u]Larkin[/name_u], so I associate it with girls! But I think it’d be a good name on a guy, and it’d make an especially interesting and creative middle name choice!
