So my mother’s name is [name]Laura[/name], which I have always thought of as a pretty name, but kind of generic and overused. However, today [name]Laura[/name] is not even in the top 100 for baby girls names (it was 273 in 2011). If I were to honor my mom by naming a daughter [name]Laura[/name] in the next few years (newlywed here…not trying to get pregnant quite yet!), do you think it would sound fresh? Or would it sound dated since it was super popular in the 60s, 70s, and 80s? I’m hoping its classic enough that it will never sound dated, but I want to know what you berries think!
Also, inspired by nameberry, I’ve been playing around with some middle names
I’m sort of leaning toward [name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] as my favorite, not only because I think [name]Eloise[/name] is adorable, but then her initials would be [name]LEO[/name], which I think is awesome! I’m fantasizing about a nursery decorated with little lions everywhere. Is that cute, or am I crazy?
I like [name]Laura[/name]. It reminds me of [name]Laura[/name] Ingalls, which is why I think it is a solid classic. If we were going to say a name was dated, I would say that [name]Lauren[/name] is dated. I don’t like categorizing names as being dated or not dated though. It would be refreshing to see someone name a baby [name]Laura[/name]. I have never met someone named [name]Laura[/name]. I have met a [name]Lauren[/name], and that has tainted my perception of the name, but I still like it thanks to [name]Lauren[/name] Bacall (as you can tell).
Anyway, from your list I like:
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name]
Btw: I love the idea of a lion nursery. My DS had a [name]Lion[/name] themed nursery, it was so cute. It would be so different than the regular frilly, pink butterfly designs I see for little girls.
I’m a [name]Laura[/name] and I [name]LOVE[/name] my name, I was born in 1992 and there were about five Lauras in my class at school, which didn’t really bother me due to my mn, which is [name]Kate[/name], and I do tend to go by [name]Laura[/name] [name]Kate[/name] all the time because I love my name and how it sounds. I don’t think [name]Laura[/name] could ever be dated, its such a classic name.
Middle names my parents considered when naming me were;
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Anna[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Ashleigh[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] manages to be both wholesome & plain yet has a sultry side imo with the film by that name & I immediately think of Twin Peaks as well.
I think [name]Laurel[/name] feels more ‘little girl of today’ but [name]Laura[/name] works too. I really like [name]Lauren[/name] even though it’s very tied to my gen. It sounds the sleekest of the group. I think [name]Lori[/name] is the dated one…
[name]Flora[/name] could be a nice & modern name to connect to your [name]Laura[/name].
I think [name]Laura[/name] works though & [name]Laura[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] is great. I think [name]Josephine[/name] adds a bit of though stuff to [name]Laura[/name] that the other combos don’t.
[name]Laura[/name] gets a thumbs-up from me! I think there are names that work more nicely once they’re not so popular, and then there are those that feel truly dated and a modern child probably wouldn’t like. [name]Laura[/name] is in the first category [name]IMO[/name].
I have a cousin named [name]Laura[/name] [name]Jane[/name] : ) I think it’d be a great classic name to make a comeback. From your middle name options I like [name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] the best.
I like [name]Laura[/name]. It’s a bit dated sounding, but I think it’s cute. If I met a little [name]Laura[/name] it’d be surprising, but a good surprise. I, personally, prefer [name]Lauren[/name] or [name]Laurel[/name]. [name]Lauren[/name] is just prettier in my opinion. That is all personal preference, though.
From your list, I like:
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Hi[/name] – my 3 1/2 year old is named [name]Laura[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] and to answer your question, yes [name]Laura[/name] is a timeless classic.
That being said, I have often wished that we named our daughter something else. [name]Laura[/name] was a bit of a compromise between my husband and I, and there are many more “interesting” names I would have preferred ([name]Juliet[/name], [name]Della[/name], [name]Daphne[/name], [name]Cecily[/name]). And there were even other classics that I prefered ([name]Caroline[/name], [name]Claire[/name], etc.)
The best thing about [name]Laura[/name] is that she will likely always be the only one in her class. By way of contrast, there are 3 Pipers in her preschool, and too many Ellies and Lilys to count.
The main thing that has made me regret using [name]Laura[/name] is that we rarely get complimented on her name!! I mean, it’s not the kind of name that people go crazy over. The other thing is that I HATE the name [name]Laurie[/name], which a few people have called her (oh, and she gets called [name]Lauren[/name] by mistake too).
I think [name]Eloise[/name] is a great middle name for [name]Laura[/name]. If you like it, go for it, I’m just telling you my honest experience.
I love [name]Laura[/name]! It’s my mom’s name and I wish I could use it but every first born girl on her side of the family is named [name]Laura[/name] and she said she would hate it if she had someone named after her. I think it’s beautiful! [name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] would be my choice.
I’ll vote timeless as well.
I slightly prefer [name]Laurel[/name], but [name]Laura[/name] is certainly a classic. I know a pair of sisters (ages 3 and 5) who are [name]Laura[/name] & [name]Mary[/name] (So [name]Little[/name] House on the [name]Prairie[/name], yes) and it does feel very refreshing on a child today.
I am [name]Laura[/name] [name]Alison[/name] and was (sort of) named after [name]Laura[/name] Ingalls [name]Wilder[/name]. I think the story goes that my mom originally wanted to name me [name]Mary[/name], but [name]Laura[/name] was the compromise. I was born in '83.
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] is an updated and cute combination. Also, the meaning of [name]Laura[/name] (crowned with laurel; victory) has been a little confidence-booster for me.
[name]Ive[/name] never been a [name]Laura[/name] fan. It seems plain and dated. But i do love [name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] and the lion nursery. I would prefer [name]Flora[/name] or [name]Laurel[/name] to honor your mom but thats just me.
Fresh! There’s something ethereal and evocative about [name]Laura[/name]. I knew a fantastically kind and gorgeous girl named [name]Laurie[/name], so maybe I’m biased, but I like [name]Laurie[/name] as a nickname. (With all the Ellies and Sophies running around, why not [name]Laurie[/name]?) She would probably be the only [name]Laura[/name] in her class, which - as someone who never had to share her name with any classmates can attest to - is an awesome feeling. And [name]LEO[/name] is a great set of initials. If you’re realllllllly unsure about [name]Laura[/name], you could use the initials as a jumping off point and call her [name]Leona[/name] or [name]Leoni[/name] instead. But I really think any girl would be happy to be named [name]Laura[/name].
[name]One[/name] more thing: I have a friend named [name]Laura[/name], and I remember when we had a coversation about names she said how much she loved [name]Laura[/name], and how she appreciated how “classic” and “timeless” it was. So there you go.
I love [name]Laura[/name]! I’d go with it! I love it more than [name]Lauren[/name] and [name]Laurel[/name]. It is just such a pretty sound and think it is sooo underrated! it is not plain or boring to me at all. Go for it! [name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] is so sweet! I like [name]Laurie[/name] too but the good thing about nicknames is you can ‘take it or leave it’. The lion nursery is a stroke of genius! i still have no idea what to do about my nursery! i’ve always loved fairies but not the whole girly girl pink super skinny fairies i have been thinking of a sort of mythical and mystical theme with beautiful artwork…
I know a lot of girls named [name]Laura[/name] but most of them are my age. I don’t know any little girls names [name]Laura[/name]. Especially considering the sentimental reasons behind choosing the name I would day go for it!
I love [name]Laura[/name]! I find her refreshing, especially in this age of [name]Lauren[/name], which is becoming dated. I love your list!
My favorite is [name]Laura[/name] [name]Juliet[/name], [name]Laura[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] and [name]Laura[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]. I also love [name]Laura[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Laura[/name] [name]Emily[/name].
