Which do you prefer and why?
For me, I prefer Lawrence/Lawrie as I think it looks more masculine?
Thoughts. ?
I like both, they just have very different vibes in my mind. [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] feels more American to me and [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] more [name_f]British[/name_f], but I don’t think that’s based on any data just my personal interpretation. [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] is a little more formal, like a lord on a country estate, and [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] a little more cowboy or boy-next-door. The nickname [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] reminds me of the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women character, but I agree in the US it’s much more unisex and a [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] might be more likely to be a woman.
Overall I like both spellings and don’t think you can go wrong.
I’m not sure if this is actually true, but I prefer [name_u]Laurence[/name_u], because to me [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] looks more like a surname than a first name, unlike [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]!
I’m inclined to pronounce them slightly differently. [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] like lahr-ence and [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] like loor-ence so maybe that makes a difference to you?
I much prefer [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]! nn [name_m]Lawrie[/name_m] is wonderful. :]
I prefer Laurence — the Alcottian spelling!
Agreed. Especially when it comes to nicknames! Lawrie looks like lah-ree, Laurie like lor-ree.
I’d pronounce Lowry like that but Lawrie to me is still Law-ree because of the way we say Law, no?
In England anyway
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] is traditionally the more Scottish version. We have Scottish roots, our surname is [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]
Ok thanks. I’m just having a hard time with [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] from [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]. Looks so feminine to me. Like Lauren/Laura/laurel. But [name_m]Lawrie[/name_m] feels boyish and more masculine. Hopefully this doesn’t open a whole gender naming debate. I just like my son’s to have masculine names.
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] - I just like the look of it and it doesn’t have the [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] [name_u]Fox[/name_u] association
Me too!
I really like [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] (nn Laurie), which has a nice literary association from [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women.
[name_u]Laurence[/name_u] seems more… formal? Fusty? [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] has a boyish charm that I think will age well.
100% prefer [name_u]Laurence[/name_u].
I prefer [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u], probably because that’s what I’m used to! It looks more correct for some reason haha
I agree with this. I tend to say Lawrence with a more distinct ‘la’ sound like the word ‘law’ and Laurence I tend to say it more as Loar-ence.
For that reason I prefer Laurence.
