Layne or Lane? Is there a correct spelling?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all,
I wanted some opinions on whether there is a consensus to a ‘correct spelling’ for [name_u]Layne[/name_u]/lane?
I’m a British [name_u]Berry[/name_u] and I have never come across this name in real life. My husband pitched this as a potential name if next baby is a boy and he thinks that the [name_u]Layne[/name_u] spelling is more natural to him as he knows it from the singer in [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in chains. He reasons [name_u]Layne[/name_u] is a name, [name_u]Lane[/name_u] is a path/road.
What do you think?
Does [name_u]Layne[/name_u] make you think ‘girl’?
Does [name_u]Layne[/name_u] make you think it should be pronounced [name_f]Lainey[/name_f]?
I’m not looking for critique on the name as such, I know some people will love it and others hate it.
Thanks for your help x

[name_u]Layne[/name_u] is my mother’s maiden name. I have a male second cousin with [name_u]Layne[/name_u] as a first name. My middle name and my female cousin’s middle name is [name_u]Layne[/name_u]. My eldest daughter will have [name_u]Layne[/name_u] in the middle spot and that tradition will probably continue with our family. So, I love [name_u]Layne[/name_u]! I think it can work for a boy or girl.

Definitely [name_u]Lane[/name_u]. All the boys I have known use this spelling. The y looks feminine.

Unless it’s a family name with the Y spelling, I think [name_u]Lane[/name_u] looks more masculine.

I prefer just [name_u]Lane[/name_u]. [name_u]Layne[/name_u] seems too feminine to me and at first I said it like [name_f]Lainey[/name_f]

I prefer [name_u]Lane[/name_u] for a boy because “y” is often used to make a name more feminine for some reason. [name_u]Lane[/name_u] also looks sleeker. The “y” seems unnecessary.

I would pronounce [name_u]Lane[/name_u] and [name_u]Layne[/name_u] the same, not like [name_f]Lainey[/name_f].

[name_u]Lane[/name_u]. As pp, people put y’s in names in an effort to try and make them girl’s names and to be be unique when really it just makes the name look odd and have unnecessary letters

I think both are fine. I personally prefer [name_u]Lane[/name_u]. [name_u]Layne[/name_u] looks like a unique spelling to me. However, if your husband is set on [name_u]Layne[/name_u] I would use it.

I think [name_u]Lane[/name_u] looks more masculine. I immediately thought girl when I read your post.

I know of [name_u]Lane[/name_u] ([name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls), [name_u]Laine[/name_u] ([name_u]Baby[/name_u]-Sitter’s Club), and I think my cousin [name_f]Elaina[/name_f] sometimes went by Lain.

To me, [name_u]Laine[/name_u] and [name_u]Layne[/name_u] are the most feminine of the bunch.

I strongly prefer [name_u]Lane[/name_u]. Unless [name_u]Layne[/name_u] is a family name, I feel the y just adds obfuscation.

Hmmm. I love the name, but I really think either spelling could work, although my gut instinct says [name_u]Layne[/name_u].

Of the two I prefer [name_u]Lane[/name_u].

I worked with an older gentleman who spelled his name [name_u]Laine[/name_u]. I love it. It was on our list and when I mentioned here most people said this looked more feminine to them. I think because of the great association I have with it, I just don’t see it.

Also - I would pronounce [name_u]Layne[/name_u] the same as [name_u]Lane[/name_u].

[name_u]Lane[/name_u]. On paper would definitely assume [name_u]Layne[/name_u] was a girl.

I pronounce [name_u]Lane[/name_u] and [name_u]Layne[/name_u] the same. Although I don’t think I have a preference of how the name is spelled, either way I think it’s a masculine name.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone, thank you for your input.
Part of starting this thread was to see if people had legitimately come across the [name_u]Layne[/name_u] spelling and whether it would still read as [name_u]Lane[/name_u]- good to see this is the case.
Hubby is pretty keen on the [name_u]Layne[/name_u] spelling due to his admiration for the singer in A.I.C
Good to see some love for [name_u]Lane[/name_u]/[name_u]Layne[/name_u] in general x
