Legit Spelling?!

Is [name_f]Locklyn[/name_f] a legit spelling variant of [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]?
Im trying to get that its not through a girls head, and she said “well I know a girl and her name is [name_f]Locklyn[/name_f]” Well that must automatically make it a legit spelling variant, right?! -_-

People like that really annoy me ¬¬

It looks like a trendy misspelt gender-bender to me. [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] = ‘loch’ + ‘land’. Last time I checked, the Scots don’t pronounce ‘land’ anything like ‘lyn’ and I bet most wouldn’t dream of giving this boys’ name to a girl, so I wouldn’t think it’s a true Scottish variant at all

Nope, it’s not a “legit” spelling but that doesn’t stop anyone from using it or believing that it is. [name_f]Locklyn[/name_f] is a horrid modern invention that some parents have used to “feminize” [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] (a boys name) and therefore make it more acceptable for a girl. It doesn’t work for me. Adding “lyn” on the end of names and words is an epidemic.

I guess it is not legit per se, but I have seen [name_f]Locklyn[/name_f] numerous times.

It is totally aggravating when people think because someone has a name spelled a certain way that its the correct way to spell it. [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is a great name for a boy, it’s in our top 3 if this baby is a boy. So sad to hear that someone thinks it should be misspelled and that they think its for a girl.

I know a [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] who holds a Ph.D in English, and he would laugh heartily at this suggestion. [name_f]Locklyn[/name_f] is not a name, it is not even a word.

Unfortunately, language is always changing. If enough people use it… it becomes a legit name. :frowning:

I can’t say [name_f]Locklyn[/name_f] is the wrong spelling since you can spell a name however you choose(no matter how horrid it is), but it’s definately not the legit spelling. People using a particular spelling often doesn’t make it the legit or proper(by legit I mean traditional or at least not recently made up) spelling. For instance, [name_f]Zoey[/name_f], [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] are widely accepted spellings(not many people would say they were spelt wrong), but [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f](or [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]), and [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] are the legit spellings. It would be one thing to name your daughter [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m], but [name_f]Locklyn[/name_f] is just terrible.

This has to be the only place on the interwebs where other people share my frustration on this topic. I HATE MISSPELLED names! It doesn’t make it unique or cool or whatever- it makes it stupid!!! Argh!!

I don’t consider them names. If language didn’t have rules, and we could just spell names/words however we wanted, our ability to communicate would be seriously hampered. To the people who argue otherwise, I wonder how many languages they speak besides American English? Because this ¨I can spell it however I want¨ attitude would not fly in any foreign language classroom. Does it stem from the fact that the U.S. does not have an official language? (Yes, I am assuming much of the insistence on the legitimacy of misspelled names is being perpetrated by Americans)
