The traditional long forms of [name]Leo[/name] are off the table (ie [name]Leonard[/name], [name]Leonardo[/name], [name]Leopold[/name] etc). So I thought that [name]Elliot[/name] could be shortened to [name]Leo[/name]. I know it’s not the traditional nickname for [name]Elliot[/name], but I love [name]Leo[/name] and like the idea of a longer name if he later chooses to go by a full name.
I think it works fine! [name]Elliot[/name] is my third favorite way to get to the nn [name]Leo[/name] (after [name]Leopold[/name] and [name]Leander[/name]). [name]Lio[/name] is right there, so I don’t know why it would be a huge stretch. I think [name]Elliot[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name] makes much more sense than [name]Elliot[/name] nn [name]Eli[/name]–the only sound that [name]Elliot[/name] and [name]Eli[/name] share in common are the “L”. And I think [name]Eli[/name]'s a fairly common nn for [name]Elliot[/name].
If you’re not set on [name]Elliot[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name], I think another great way to get [name]Leo[/name] is a -ley ending name, followed by an “O” MN, like [name]Hartley[/name] [name]Owen[/name], or [name]Bailey[/name] [name]Oscar[/name] (on my own list!), or [name]Riley[/name] [name]Oliver[/name]…
I am once again asking myself why? If you like [name]Leo[/name], then use it. It is a perfectly sound name on its own and doesn’t need a longer form. I don’t see the point of naming your child a name that will never be used.
Thanks everyone! I would normally agree that a longer name for [name]Leo[/name] isn’t necessary, but DH isn’t sold on [name]Leo[/name] so [name]Elliot[/name] is sort of a compromise.
I think it’s pretty odd. [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Elliot[/name] are completely different names. The letter ‘lio’ in [name]Elliot[/name] do not make the same sound as the name [name]Leo[/name].
Someone will jump in and say ‘nicknames can be whatever you want’, which…yeah, of course they can. But if you’re wondering whether people will think [name]Leo[/name] is disconnected from [name]Elliot[/name], I think the answer is ‘yes’.
Yeah, I would think this was kind of strange. The sounds are sort of but not really there. I like the suggestion of [name]Emilio[/name], though I think [name]Leo[/name]'s pretty good on its own.
If this baby is a boy, that’s our naming plan! I love, love, love [name]Elliot[/name], but it’s important to me to have a one syllable nickname and I don’t like any other versions (though our friends insist they’ll call him Iot - ha!).
My niece is [name]Madeline[/name] nn [name]Emme[/name], so I figure my sister set the precedent for nicknames being not exact and I’m fine with it.
