Leo

I’m not giving birth any time soon so there’s no urgency!

[name_m]Leo[/name_m] has been my favourite boy’s name since I can remember and by coincidence it is also my s/o’s favourite name since he can remember.

I’m going to admit it, I am a little bit of a hipster. I hate having things I love getting popular and it’s made me sad that my little [name_m]Leo[/name_m] will just be another [name_m]Leo[/name_m] out of 50 that he knows. I love the name for so many reasons so I don’t want to let it go and only see it rising in popularity.

Looking for some words of advice from people who have similar experiences.

This is a tough one. I say let [name_m]Leo[/name_m] be your favorite until another name comes about you love more. You never know, when you are ready to have children, it’s popularly might not be such a big deal.

And it’s a major plus that it’s your s/o’s favorite name, as well!

I’m getting close to the time where my husband and I will start trying to have a baby and the popularity of a name certainly isn’t as important to me today as it once was. I used to be against any name that I’ve ever heard anyone I knew using before. I would even make up names sometimes. But the older I’ve gotten and the closer I get to having my own baby, the less I care if there are other little “whatever namers” out there.

Also, I think [name_m]Leo[/name_m] is more popular today than it has been in the past, but it still holds uniqueness. I feel as if [name_m]Leo[/name_m] is one of those classic unique names. Popular enough to recognize and adore, but unique enough to still stand on it’s own away from other common names.

Looking at your signature, [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], ([name_f]Nova[/name_f]), [name_f]Esme[/name_f], ([name_f]Noelle[/name_f]), [name_m]Felix[/name_m], ([name_m]Lucien[/name_m] as [name_m]Lucian[/name_m]), [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Edward[/name_m] all seem to be names that could get more popular in the future. You can be ahead of the curve but if you choose a beautiful name, you cannot avoid it getting popular in the future. I think since you can’t look into the future, you can choose a name like [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] or [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] that won’t come back or you choose a name that’s already quite popular but you still love, as that will guarantee that you won’t be disappointed if the previously #3982nd name gets popular all of a sudden and your kid isn’t the only one in a 100 mile radius called the name anymore.

There are names I’ve loved for long time, and I thought they were so unique and no one had it until I saw how popular the names were getting lol. What I say is still use the name [name_m]Leo[/name_m] if that’s the one you love because your the one who will be calling your child that. Also who knows, names go in and out of popularity all the time

I suppose the significance is what matters most. I happen to like [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]William[/name_m] and they are always very popular so maybe it’s just a change of mindset that is needed.

Yea those are nice names too, how I like to think of it when I see a unique name that I love suddenly become popular is “Wow, I must have really good taste” lol  Pick the name you love because if you go for 2nd best just because it’s less ‘popular’ then you’ll regret it in the future if it does become popular, but you didn’t love the name as much. I think it’s so awesome that your s/o also loves the same name as you do.

If you love it, do it. It is frustrating when names get too popular, but I don’t think that that should take away your love for the name. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t regret not naming your little boy something you’ve had your heart set on for years, just because of pop culture.

One thing you need to remember is just because it is popular, that doesn’t really mean you’re going to hear it a hundred times! People have been using more and more unique and different names that the popularity list isn’t quite the same as it was 20-30 years ago. I have yet to meet a child named [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and that is the #1 name! Though I do know two babies born recently named [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. I don’t think you should give up on a name just because it seems to be getting popular. A few years from now it might start falling on the list, or it could go up! You never know. If you both love it, I think you should stick with it!

I love [name_m]Leo[/name_m] as well and have been hearing it everywhere in recent years. I want to agree with the posters who say that if you love a name, use it anyway. And I’ve given this advice out myself in the past. But if you are drawn to a name initially because it is rare or unexpected or offbeat, would you still love it as much if it became mainstream? Popularity can quickly escalate into overuse, and overuse has a way of cheapening a name or taking away what might have drawn you to it in the first place. This may not happen with [name_m]Leo[/name_m], but it’s once of those names that is rising so quickly that I can see where your hesitation is coming from.

My husband and I plan on using [name_m]Leo[/name_m] if/when we have a baby boy. I totally understand your concern, I’ve thought about it to! But, at the end of the day, [name_m]Leo[/name_m] isn’t CRAZY popular, at least not yet, it’s barely in the top 100. If it moves up to the top 50 I’ll start worrying about it more. At the end of the day, you can’t predict who your child’s peers will be. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you name your child something really unusual there could still be another kid in his class with the same name, and then you’d be upset that you’d passed up on a name you love in order to get a unique name which didn’t actually end up being unique! My friend teaches kindergarten and she doesn’t have a single child with a top ten name in her current class, but she has three Dantes! You just can’t predict the future!

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] see [name_m]Leo[/name_m] is #16 in the UK and that’s where I live. It’s CRAZY popular. I love the name for it’s meaning and not it’s uniqueness, there’s so many historic [name_m]Leos[/name_m] that I’d be surprised if someone hadn’t heard the name. But you’re all completely right, thanks guys <3
