Leon or Sebastian?

[name_m]Leon[/name_m] or [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]?

I’d love to know which you prefer and why or pros and cons for each name.

I don’t love [name_m]Seb[/name_m] and would probably always use [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] or possibly [name_m]Tian[/name_m] (I have Chinese heritage and [name_m]Tian[/name_m] means [name_m]Sky[/name_m])

We also have an [name_m]August[/name_m], so is [name_m]Leon[/name_m] too horoscopey being so close to [name_m]Leo[/name_m]?

Thanks!

This one is hard, I really like both names!

When you say you don’t love [name_m]Seb[/name_m] - would you have an issue with others calling him that, or him introducing himself as that when he’s older? Because if yes, I’d probably avoid [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] (you could maybe do [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] instead since that still gives you ‘Tian’)

I like astrology, but I wouldn’t have made that conneection with Leon/August so I think you’re good on that front!

I personally prefer [name_m]Leon[/name_m], and [name_m]August[/name_m] and [name_m]Leon[/name_m] are perfect as brothers in my opinion!

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] → classic and handsome, but would you be upset if he wanted to go by [name_m]Seb[/name_m] or didn’t mind his friends calling him that? It can be hard to control nicknames once a child gets older and decides what they like. I like that [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] works in many languages. It feels more formal than [name_m]Leon[/name_m].

[name_m]Leon[/name_m] → traditional yet still somewhat unexpected. I like that it works in many languages, and that everyone will be familiar with it, but he’s unlikely to have many other [name_m]Leons[/name_m] in his classes, etc (although he may have classmates with other [name_m]Leo[/name_m] names). I don’t think it’s too horoscopey at all, since both [name_m]Leon[/name_m] and [name_m]August[/name_m] are classic names, I probably wouldn’t have made the connection. They do feel somewhat summery together, but I like that.

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]!

I greatly prefer [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] over [name_m]Leon[/name_m]

I like both, but in this case I’ll chose [name_m]Leon[/name_m]!

I personally prefer [name_m]Leon[/name_m], and I don’t think I would have thought about the horoscope thing if you hasn’t said anything. I just like the sound and look better.

While there is some risk to other people trying “Seb,” and of course your child could end up liking it, I think it is actually hard to say for sure what a nickname will be. I know someone who was always [name_m]William[/name_m] and never [name_m]Will[/name_m] until he went to college and didn’t have as much pressure to stay using his full name. On the other hand, “Ellie” is a very very obvious nickname for me and I have never used it. I don’t think I even recall anyone trying, but if they did I guess I didn’t notice and didn’t respond to it. [name_m]You[/name_m] can’t know whether your child will be more like [name_m]Will[/name_m] or more like me when it comes to a nickname.

I personally prefer Leon. A little biased as it’s my son’s middle. When I was pregnant my husband actually suggested Sebastian too, but like you, I don’t really care about Seb. While it’s possible to use other nicknames at home, Seb is the more intuitive one so one day, someone somewhere is likely going to call him that. He might even choose it himself. If that’s okay with you, it’s not a biggie though.

Leon is just handsome. It’s a solid classic name so the horoscope wouldn’t be a strong association. If you have a March/Mars and considering Aries, that’s different, but August and Leon sound totally fine.

They’re both great names!

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is my fave boys’ name so my instinct to side with him. [name_m]You[/name_m] could use the full name, then [name_m]Bastian[/name_m], [name_m]Bash[/name_m], [name_m]Bass[/name_m] and [name_m]Tian[/name_m] (I like that added meaning) but I think you should only choose [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] if you’d be OK with his friends calling him [name_m]Seb[/name_m] at at least one point in life - school, uni, work.

I do think [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] goes a fraction better with [name_m]August[/name_m], not bc of the astrology thing with [name_m]Leon[/name_m], which is unlikely to be noticed, more [name_m]August[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] both being quite stately and uppercrust.

That said, [name_m]Leon[/name_m] being less matchy with [name_m]August[/name_m] is in its favour - they pair well as tailored, confident names, but they’re not too matchy, and visually they look cooler together - [name_m]August[/name_m] & [name_m]Leon[/name_m]. [name_m]Leon[/name_m] has someone very self-assured and quietly commanding about it, and I think it would make for a fresh and modern pairing even though both names are traditional on their own.

I like [name_m]Leon[/name_m] better! [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] in a US accent ends with “chin,” and I strongly associate it with the crab in [name_m]The[/name_m] [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid (not that that’s a bad thing necessarily).

[name_m]Welcome[/name_m] back! [name_m]Leon[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] are both gorgeous—I’d love to meet little ones with either name! In general I slightly prefer [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], but I think I connect a little more to [name_m]Leon[/name_m] than the nn [name_m]Tian[/name_m], and [name_m]Leon[/name_m] feels less expected than [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] too (I say this like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] isn’t one of my own favorite boys’ names :joy::joy:). I think I’m voting [name_m]Leon[/name_m] here, but you can’t go wrong! All the best!

I don’t mind if he chooses to go by [name_m]Seb[/name_m] I jut don’t care much for the nickname personally! Thanks for your comment!

I’d love to know your reasons!

I just prefer the way [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] sounds, and I have some negative opinions on [name_m]Leon[/name_m]

Definitely Sebastian!! But I also adore [name_m]Leo[/name_m]!

That’s a tough one. I really like both. I love [name_m]Tian[/name_m] as a nickname with a significant link to your heritage. [name_f]Beautiful[/name_f] meaning. For [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], there’s also [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] as a nickname.

[name_m]August[/name_m] and [name_m]Leon[/name_m] have a better flow than [name_m]August[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], but it’s true that I might have noticed the astrological link. Still, I don’t really think this would matter, and highly doubt most people would notice.

My favourite of the two is currently [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], because I’ve never met one, whereas I’ve met a [name_m]Leon[/name_m]. [name_m]Leon[/name_m] feels more modern, and I feel attracted to older names at the moment. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] has a classical and mature feel while [name_m]Leon[/name_m] has a youthful and artistic feel. I would go with which you prefer.

What about just [name_m]Tian[/name_m]? I know one (sp Tiaan) and I think it’s lovely.

That being said I think you can direct people away from [name_m]Seb[/name_m] if you prefer the full name.

I don’t consider [name_m]August[/name_m] and [name_m]Leon[/name_m] horoscopey at all.

I’d definitely go with [name_m]Leon[/name_m]. It’s cool and calm and fits nicely with [name_m]August[/name_m] in a unique and mature way. I do like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] as well but the nickname [name_m]Seb[/name_m] is nearly impossible to avoid so if that’s something you’re strongly against, I wouldn’t go with [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]!

Both are lovely!!

Both go with [name_m]August[/name_m] well too in my opinion.

Haven’t met a [name_m]Leon[/name_m] yet, but I have met a Spanish [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] who went either by [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] or [name_m]Sebas[/name_m]. Haven’t met a [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] called [name_m]Seb[/name_m], but, sounds like I’m in the minority there. There’s Sebby too. But [name_m]Tian[/name_m] is really cool and it’s possible your kid might just keep [name_m]Tian[/name_m] as his nn. I would given the heritage, but, you never know.

I’m not into astrology or horoscopes, so I didn’t know about [name_m]August[/name_m] and [name_m]Leon[/name_m]. Leo/Leon is the same thing to me as both mean [name_m]Lion[/name_m].

This is such a hard pick!!

If [name_m]August[/name_m] is old enough, you could let him do the honors.

Either way fits and is gorgeous. Can’t go wrong with either.
