What do you think of the name [name]Leona[/name] (pr [name]LEE[/name]-oh-na) with the nickname [name]Lena[/name] (pr [name]LEE[/name]-na)? Is that how you’d pronounce them? I know the pronunciation of [name]Lena[/name] can vary.
I don’t think [name]Leona[/name] needs a nickname, especially [name]Lena[/name]. I’d pronounce [name]Lena[/name] as lay-na but that’s only because that’s how my cousin’s daughter pronounces her name.
It’s nice, though I’d intuitively put the accent on the second syllable.
I prefer [name]Leonor[/name] or [name]Lenore[/name].
[name]Lena[/name] is absolutely lovely and light and elegant. Makes me think of the beautiful and talented [name]Lena[/name] Horne. It doesn’t do too much to shorten [name]Leona[/name] though. I prefer [name]Lena[/name] on its own, or as a nick for [name]Helena[/name] or [name]Magdalena[/name].
Oh, and I pronounce [name]Lena[/name] like you do, [name]LEEnah[/name]. So I guess it doesn’t totally make sense as a nick for [name]Helena[/name]/[name]Magdalena[/name].
Thanks for these responses!
And now that you mention it, I do actually pronouce [name]Leona[/name] more like [name]Lee[/name] OH na with the accent on the middle syllable.
I don’t think [name]Leona[/name] necessarily needs a nickname but I don’t like the pronunciation differences with [name]Lena[/name] ([name]Lee[/name]-na & [name]Lay[/name]-na).
[name]Just[/name] thinking through some options…
I like just [name]Lena[/name] so much more than [name]Leona[/name]. [name]Lena[/name] is so pretty and light.
I think it’s pretty! I know a [name]Lenah[/name], she pronounces it lee-na
I think [name]Leona[/name] is a beautiful and elegant name which I pronounce [name]LE[/name]-o-nah, certainly not in need for the nickname [name]Lena[/name], but then again I am not a fan of [name]Lena[/name]. If I was thinking of nicknames I would say maybe [name]Lea[/name] or [name]Leonie[/name].
