[name_f]My[/name_f] understanding has been:
[name_m]Leon[/name_m] (Lee-on)
[name_m]Leone[/name_m] (Lee-own)
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f] (Lee-own-EE)
I know accents and where in the world you live impacts all of this. I am Canadian and my thought would be to spell it [name_m]Leone[/name_m], and hope it would be read and pronounced as Lee-own.
I guess, but [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] & [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] all have an Ee sound at the end, rather than being pronounced [name_m]Zo[/name_m], Percy-phone & Penna-lope. But I read [name_m]Leone[/name_m] as Lee-Own
I’m in the southern US, and I would say lee-OWN as in [name_f]Sierra[/name_f] [name_m]Leone[/name_m]. I can maybe see some people going for leh-OH-neh as in the Italian word for “lion”, though.
[name_m]Leone[/name_m] is a very common Italian name pronounced leh-oh-neh in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] so this would be my intuitive pronunciation (e pronounced as in the word men)
[name_m]Leon[/name_m] is the closest to lee-own pronunciation for me 🫶🏻
I would say [name_m]Leone[/name_m] as sort of like lay-OWN, but then again I would say [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] as lay-OWN-ee so it’s prob similar to how you’re saying it!!
