Leonidas is out. Now we're lost

[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is out because too many family members are fixated on the fact that it “sounds like a disease” (idas rhymes with itis. As in bronchitis.) It makes me worry he’ll hear that his entire life and resent his name, even though his dad and I find the name incredibly strong.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] though we liked [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], it was only because it was the only name we could agree on as a couple.

I like word names, playful names, badass names, and old classics that are so old, they’ve become unique. ([name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Beau[/name_m], [name_u]Lucky[/name_u], [name_m]Rocky[/name_m], [name_m]Solomon[/name_m])

Hubby likes epic names, names from mythology, any name that is rich with history. (Ares, [name_m]Achilles[/name_m], [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m])

We can meet half way on some names… we [name_m]BOTH[/name_m] like [name_m]Maverick[/name_m](but I HATE nickname rick) , [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Rocky[/name_m], [name_m]Stone[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m] (can’t use jack.) Atlas, Theodore or Theo.

A word name/noun name for either first or middle is a bonus but not necessary.

Our son will be here this winter and he has a big sister named [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]. We call her Penny usually. Were very fond of having a nickname. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! We feel like we’ve seen every name and have to settle at this point so maybe some new perspective is needed

The names listed are names we love but feel like they aren’t “THE ONE”.

I think any name with the [name_m]Leo[/name_m] root sounds strong, so I will suggest:
[name_m]Leonel[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Leon[/name_m]

I was also thinking [name_m]Maverick[/name_m], but you name use the nickname Mavi…very mystical!

Other strong names:
[name_m]Roman[/name_m] (my fav)
[name_m]Roc[/name_m]/[name_m]Rocco[/name_m]
[name_m]Axel[/name_m]
[name_m]Nero[/name_m]
[name_m]Kenzo[/name_m]
[name_u]Ari[/name_u]

I was going to suggest [name_u]Rex[/name_u]. I think it’s a short but very strong name and would be great with a longer mn.

[name_u]Rex[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_u]Rex[/name_u] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]
[name_u]Rex[/name_u] [name_m]Commodore[/name_m]
[name_u]Rex[/name_u] [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m]

I think [name_m]Maverick[/name_m] is great too and I would use Mav as a nn…it’s logical and way less common than [name_m]Rick[/name_m]
And I also really like [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]…I love it.

[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m]

Other thoughts…

[name_m]Titus[/name_m]
[name_m]Aurelius[/name_m]
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] - nn [name_f]Mag[/name_f]
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_m]Caesar[/name_m]
[name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]

[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Julius[/name_m] - nn TJ

Is Mav not a good nn option for [name_m]Maverick[/name_m]?

[name_m]Helios[/name_m]
Triton
[name_u]Storm[/name_u]
[name_f]Pallas[/name_f]
Riker
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]
[name_m]Cooper[/name_m]
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m]
[name_f]Rez[/name_f]

[name_m]Odin[/name_m]
Midas
[name_m]Conall[/name_m]
Diomedes
[name_m]Gunnar[/name_m]

Hmm… I really like [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] from your list.
Other ideas:
[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (Auggie and [name_u]Penny[/name_u] or [name_u]Gus[/name_u] and [name_u]Penny[/name_u] are so sweet!)
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]

So sorry that your families don’t like [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]. What if they call him [name_m]Leo[/name_m]?

Suggestions - sorry for any repeats
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Hawk[/name_m]
[name_m]Zane[/name_m]
[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]

I think [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is very strong and masculine! I don’t think it sounds like a disease at all. I picture a boy with this name growing up to be strong and confident and popular! [name_m]Leo[/name_m] is a cute nickname to soften it up as well.

Of the names you listed I also really like [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Achilles[/name_m], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_m]Atlas[/name_m].

[name_m]How[/name_m] about…
[name_m]Ivan[/name_m]
[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]
[name_m]Lennox[/name_m]
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] nn. [name_u]Evan[/name_u] or [name_u]Van[/name_u] - I think it works well with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] too! [name_m]Evander[/name_m] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_m]Maddox[/name_m]
[name_m]Madden[/name_m]
[name_m]Dante[/name_m]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m]
[name_m]Ozias[/name_m] nn [name_m]Oz[/name_m] or [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m]

Or how about something like [name_m]Leon[/name_m] or [name_m]Leopold[/name_m]? Not quite as strong as [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] but kind of a similar feel.

Everyone has already suggested great options for you. I just wanted to tell you at my job a coworker of mine has a son named [name_m]Maverick[/name_m]. He goes by either [name_m]Maverick[/name_m] or Mav. Never [name_m]Rick[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] co worker said that she also did not want him to be called [name_m]Rick[/name_m] and that it has not been an issue at all! I like atlas, [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]/[name_u]Theo[/name_u], and [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] from the ones you and your husband both like. Might be a little out there but what about Rockledge, Rockland, Rockford, [name_m]Rockwell[/name_m] (I really like this personally), or even [name_m]Rochus[/name_m] with the nn [name_m]Rocky[/name_m]?

So many great ideas here! Thanks so much to everyone who contributed ideas. They were really inspiring! It’s weird because I call the baby [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] without thinking about it… yet it’s just not what I picture! Hubby and I have very different styles and I love my zesty pet names, word names, etc!

So my next question: how could I do [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] (mom preferred bad ass rockstar/super hero name) Last name-Last name? See, the issue is our children have a double last name. For instance, my daughter’s name is [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins. (That’s not her real last name but it rhymes.)

So [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] _______ [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins

Any ideas on a sassy, mom-approved middle??  YOU’RE ALL AMAZING

[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_m]Wolf[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_m]Fox[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_m]Stone[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_m]Thor[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_u]Story[/name_u] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_u]Fable[/name_u] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_u]Lake[/name_u] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins

That’s about all I can think of right now…

[name_m]Bravo[/name_m] for trying to go with your gut. After he’s here, your family will kindly never tell him his name sounds like a disease. Plus, sounds like you’ll be using [name_m]Leo[/name_m] most of the time, so many people will never know his full name.

[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_m]Maverick[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins sounds fabulous!!
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_m]Major[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]-Hobbins

Sorry if Im repeating someones suggestion-

[name_m]Leopold[/name_m] [name_m]Rocco[/name_m]
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m] [name_m]Stone[/name_m]
[name_m]Rocco[/name_m] [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m]
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m] [name_u]Pax[/name_u]

[name_m]Maverick[/name_m] nn Mav?

[name_f]My[/name_f] thoughts if not [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] were [name_u]Loki[/name_u] or [name_m]Cassiel[/name_m] or Castiel. Though if baby is [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] in your head now, I think he should stay [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]. I was convinced off my most favorite name with my firstborn and regretted it as it genuinely took me a couple of months to stop calling him the name he didn’t end up with when it was the middle of the night and I was half-asleep and soothing him. Hate to say I regret going with a more ‘boring’ name for him in the end, went with my first choice for my second born and love it, but now have very mismatched sibling name styles! Anyway, [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is beautiful, and it sounds like you won’t mind those family members calling him [name_m]Leo[/name_m] anyway, so win/win as far as I see!!

I knew a boy called [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] when I was in 8th grade. He was never teased for his name and everyone called him [name_m]Leo[/name_m] :).

[name_m]Ezra[/name_m] Astro or [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] [name_m]Leo/name_m

[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] is great! Also, Ariston, [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] ([name_m]Enzo[/name_m]), [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_m]Caius[/name_m], [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m], [name_u]Alexios[/name_u] (Xios).
