Hello,
My husband and I are expecting baby #3 in [name_u]March[/name_u]. We like to use family names (as first names) and I would like to honor my grandpa and uncle by using the name [name_u]Leslie[/name_u]. I actually like the name on a boy but I know most people consider it a girls name, so we would call him [name_u]Lee[/name_u]. People would know his full name though of course. Is [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] o.k. for a boy in 2015? Another option is to honor my husband’s grandpa [name_m]Werner[/name_m] by naming the little one [name_m]Warner[/name_m]. What do you think? Thanks for your help!
I don’t see a problem with it in the slightest. [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] is a nice name for a boy, I like it much better than [name_m]Warner[/name_m]. I don’t consider it to be a ‘girl’s name’, although I do consider it to be a unisex name more than simply a boy’s name. I think it’s fine on either sex.
There will probably be some less than polite people who snigger at it though, such is the world. I would be prepared for that, although I personally don’t feel it’s justified at all. You should just be ready to ask them to explain why exactly they feel a link with femininity is so demeaning. Hopefully a few of them will examine their attitudes anyway.
I vastly prefer [name_m]Warner[/name_m]. I think [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] will provoke a lot of teasing as I think it is seen as very feminine.
I think both [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] and [name_m]Warner[/name_m] are fine for a boy. You could always combine the two and name him [name_m]Wesley[/name_m]. You can still call him [name_u]Lee[/name_u] if you would like and it eliminates any gender assumptions
I prefer [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] to [name_m]Warner[/name_m] and I think [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] would be fine for a boy. Out of the only two [name_u]Leslie[/name_u]'s I’ve ever known, one of them was a man so I see it as very unisex.
I love [name_u]Leslie[/name_u], it’s very handsome. Totally usable imho.
[name_u]Leslie[/name_u] [name_m]Warner[/name_m], nn [name_u]Lee[/name_u] would be a handsome combo!
I like [name_m]Werner[/name_m]; why isn’t it an option? [name_m]Warner[/name_m] is nice too. I like [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] for boys but I prefer the spelling [name_u]Lesley[/name_u]
[name_m]Warner[/name_m]. I love [name_m]Warner[/name_m]! But also [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] on a boy would cause horrendous teasing as he grows up…
I think [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] on a boy is fine, especially in 2015. I do prefer [name_m]Warner[/name_m], though. [name_m]Warner[/name_m] [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] rocks!
I would never use [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] - on either a girl or a boy. [name_m]Warner[/name_m] is much more handsome and manly. I love the suggestion of [name_m]Wesley[/name_m]!
[name_u]Leslie[/name_u] just doesn’t sound masculine to me, especially with the -ie ending. To me, [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] is a girl name. I like the name [name_m]Warner[/name_m] much better.
Ny name is [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] and I’m a woman.
I know it began as a male name, so it seems fine from that point of view to name a boy [name_u]Leslie[/name_u].
However, I also teach and think the teasing could be quite brutal.
It depends where you live though. I’m in [name_u]California[/name_u] and if you were somewhere like [name_f]England[/name_f], maybe it wouldn’t matter?
[name_u]Lee[/name_u] is a nice name.
Warning: I do get called [name_u]Les[/name_u] a lot and even got called [name_m]Lester[/name_m] as a little girl until I put a stop to that!
Thank you all for your help! I am glad to hear positive things about [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] and [name_m]Warner[/name_m]. I agree with those who are concerned about teasing though…that is my main concern. I love the idea of using [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] to honor both [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] and [name_m]Werner[/name_m].
Since I’m in high school right now, I’m going to say no. The boys are not the nicest when it comes to calling each other ‘gay’ and I think a name like [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] would provoke way too much teasing. Boy’s may only act like that where I live. We have a great lack of diversity, 4 African-American’s in the entire school, and very few LGBT people.
If you live in a more diverse and accepting area, I think [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] is a great name and I love the nickname [name_u]Lee[/name_u].

I’m one of those people who thinks any name that fits a child of any gender should be used that way, regardless of whether or not the name is still used for both, and I think [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] is a lovely name (I think I actually prefer it on a boy!). I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u], both as a standalone and a nickname.
That being said, [name_m]Warner[/name_m] is super cool and I think works perfect with your Hunters and Ryders. Since they both mean something it’s gotta be hard to choose, but I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
If I remember correctly, the spelling [name_u]Lesley[/name_u] is traditionally used for a girl, so if you do go w/[name_u]Leslie[/name_u], I’d suggest using the -ie ending. Trivia note…[name_u]Leslie[/name_u] [name_u]Howard[/name_u] (male) played [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_m]Wilkes[/name_m] (male) in Gone With the Wind.
I just asked my ten-year-old son whether he thinks a boy named [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] would be teased at his school. He said yes, but not as emphatically as I’d expected. There’s also [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] [name_m]Nielsen[/name_m], the actor from The Naked [name_m]Gun[/name_m].
Still, I wouldn’t name a son [name_u]Leslie[/name_u]. [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is a great compromise.
I much prefer [name_m]Warner[/name_m], if you must, [name_u]Lesley[/name_u] would be a better spelling. I very much like the suggestion of combing to [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] or going with Waren [name_u]Lesley[/name_u].
I am not sure if baby has arrived yet or not but I would like to say there is NOTHING wrong with [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] for a boy! I love that you and your husband like to honor family names. That is so special and so missing in today’s world. For the record, until people decided to get going on “unisex” and “Trendy” names for girls, ‘[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]’ was always a masculine name as it was originally a surname. And who care’s what narrow minded people think anyway?
I hope your son is named what you and your husband love for a name and I personally hope he is a little [name_u]Leslie[/name_u].
