I’ve always had a soft spot for the nickname [name]Ali[/name] or Alleigh. But I feel [name]Alicia[/name] and [name]Allison[/name] are quite dated and don’t really mesh well with my other favorites. Im not sure on [name]Alice[/name]. Any creative ideas from you berries on newer and fresher ways to get [name]Ali[/name]?
And also how popular is [name]Joseph[/name] nn [name]Joey[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Jonas[/name] or [name]Jonah[/name] or [name]Joseph[/name] better for [name]Joey[/name] and overall what do you think of [name]Joey[/name]?
Honestly, I think [name]Ali[/name] (or [name]Ally[/name], or [name]Allie[/name]) is itself pretty dated – and my first instinct was to pronounce ‘[name]Ali[/name]’ ah-[name]LEE[/name], as in the three-letter mens’ name.
That said, [name]Alair[/name] is a fabulously sleek, modern name with the possibility of [name]Ali[/name]. Though it’s such a common nn I think you can stretch it a bit with the longform you choose. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a [name]Rosalba[/name] or even an [name]Azalea[/name] with the nn [name]Ali[/name]. [name]Calanthe[/name], Ottalie, and [name]Halcyone[/name] are some wackier legitimate names that could be shortened to [name]Ali[/name].
The only one I can think of that hasn’t been suggested already is [name]Alabama[/name]. And I guess, if we’re going with states, Alaska would work too.
I intend to name my daughter [name]Alessandra[/name], and one of her nicknames can be [name]Ali[/name].
I also prefer [name]Joseph[/name], but my boyfriend is [name]Joseph[/name] and he absolutely despises the nickname [name]Joey[/name]. So I’d keep that in mind, perhaps you should find a second alternative in case your son ends up hating [name]Joey[/name] too. Another nickname for [name]Joseph[/name] I’d though of is [name]Seth[/name].
[name]Allegra[/name] or [name]Alexa[/name]? I think [name]Alice[/name] is very classic though and love it! I prefer [name]Jonah[/name] and [name]Jonas[/name] to [name]Joey[/name].
I also love the nn [name]Ally[/name]/[name]Allie[/name]/[name]Ali[/name] but the only name I found aside from [name]Allison[/name] that I like is Alysiana.
I’ve known quite a few [name]Joseph[/name]'s, but the one I’ve known my whole life has always, always gone by [name]Joey[/name], never anything else, not even [name]Joe[/name]. He is in his early 30s now. The others I know are 13 ([name]Joseph[/name]), 40 ([name]Joe[/name]) and 60 ([name]Joe[/name]). I prefer this to [name]Jonah[/name] or [name]Jonas[/name].
I prefer [name]Joseph[/name], nn [name]Joey[/name] as a young boy and [name]Joe[/name]/[name]Joseph[/name] as an adult. I also love [name]Ali[/name]/[name]Allie[/name] as a nickname for [name]Alexandra[/name]. I don’t think it’s fresh, but I definitely don’t think it’s dated. I’d call it more classic. Plus, if she doesn’t like [name]Ali[/name], she can pick from any number of other nicknames available from [name]Alexandra[/name]. On another thread, folks were discussing the name [name]Alma[/name] (which pp already mentioned), and I thought of you. I know some people see that as an old lady name, but I find it refreshing – and a great way to get [name]Ali[/name].
As for the pronunciation issue, “[name]Ali[/name]” is the common nickname for the name [name]Alison[/name], etc., and everyone I know has pronounced it A-lee (like alley) (and I’ve known a LOT of Alisons). If that’s how you want to spell it, you shouldn’t run into any problems.
