So, I know that, traditionally, [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] is for a boy but recently I was rewatching [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who and in a couple of episodes a female character features and she’s named [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]. I think I might love it but it might’ve been how it sounded with a Welsh accent, I haven’t decided yet.
What do you think about [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] for a girl?
[name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: Oh, and I should probably mention before anybody suggests it - where I come from, [name_f]Ambrosia[/name_f] is a well known brand of custard, rice pudding, jelly etc and not really a viable alternative to me.
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] is one of those weird names that I find too feminine for boys and too masculine for girls. It sits somewhere along the genderless line. The -rose part throws me off for boys, and it sounds a bit like a combination of [name_f]Amber[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. However, it is a bit harsh with the “mbr” together, which makes it sound masculine.
I guess I should conclude with, I just don’t like the name in general. I don’t think it’s great for either sex.
@crispy, I can totally appreciate not being a fan of gender swapping names, largely I’m the same.
@sparkleninja, Totally agree with the ‘too feminine for a boy, too masculine for a girl’ thing, but I actually find it to be quite a soft sounding name, which I why I think I favour it for a girl.
@moonstone, I appreciate its not to everyone’s taste and I like lots of other ‘[name_f]Rose[/name_f]’ names but I just want a general opinion on this one.
It’s all boy to me, and not a fave at that. But I would find a girl named [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] a bit odd. [name_f]Amber[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is suitable, though I personally never liked the name [name_f]Amber[/name_f].
Eh, I do think it could work as a female name just going off the sound, however, it’s still a male name so a girl named [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] may run into some problems, getting documents and letters for a Mr., being put in boys groups by teachers, etc.
I think for anyone really loving the sound, [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] could be a feminine alternative.
I think it would be okay to name a girl [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], to me it could be a unisex name. I know some may not agree, but if you like it on a girl then why not use it
If you can name a girl [name_u]James[/name_u], for example, then why not [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]?
(side note, I’ve only heard James on boys until Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds named their daughter James)
I really dislike it for a girl. I find it so classically handsome and honestly it seems uneducated to use it for a female. I’m certainly not saying you’re uneducated but if I were to meet a girl [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] I would definitely think “her parents thought because this handsome boy name ended in rose it’s a girl name, how silly.”
A masculine staple in the Catholic community. Catholics have a history of gender bending names but can’t see [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] on a girl out of that context.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I can see that the general consensus is that its all boy but I’m glad to see that a couple of people could see it on a girl. Looks like this one will have to be relegated to the guilty pleasure list.
