[name_f]My[/name_f] mom was discussing Welsh baby names with me the other day, and she suggested [name_u]Bryn[/name_u]. She’d heard it on an infant male character on a soap opera from the UK that she watches religiously (Coronation [name_f]Street[/name_f] - where I’ve seemingly pulled much of my inspiration from LOL) and thought it was perfect for me.
I do love [name_u]Bryn[/name_u], and I think it’s very sweet - S/O didn’t seem to mind it too much either when my mom mentioned it, and it’s one of those names (much like [name_u]Reece[/name_u] and [name_u]Morgan[/name_u], which are also on our list) that I like for either gender.
However, we live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], and although I can’t find [name_f]Canada[/name_f]-specific stats on the name, in the US, [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] sits at #305 for girls, and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] itself last ranked for girls back in 2014 at #966. [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] has been in and out of the girls top 1000 since 1980, but neither spelling has ever ranked for a boy.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] could work on a little boy in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u]?
I love [name_u]Bryn[/name_u]! I think it’s great for both genders, but I definitely prefer this spelling for a boy. It has an androgynous sound that makes it completely usable for boy or girl. I can’t speak for [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u], but I can’t see any reason why it couldn’t work – especially if it’s inspired by a male tv character (I’m assuming it’s male as I don’t watch Coronation [name_f]Street[/name_f]).
@gia.berry - I totally forgot to add, but yes [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] is a male character on the show I’ll edit to add that in now! There’s a couple who had quads earlier in the year and all four babies have Welsh names ([name_u]Bryn[/name_u] (b), [name_m]Aled[/name_m] (b), [name_f]Carys[/name_f] (g) and [name_f]Llio[/name_f] (g, pronounced as [name_f]Cleo[/name_f]?)! Thank you
Personally, I don’t think it’d work. It sounds very feminine to me, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, I imagine it could get annoying getting mistaken for the wrong gender all the time.
Oh my gosh, [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] is one of my favorite boy names!! another berry was considering it for her son a long time ago, and I instantly fell in love. I know the name is unisex, but I much prefer it on a boy. I think it’s handsome and soft, but also has some strength behind it.
I definitely think it can work in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u]! I live in the US, and wouldn’t be surprised to meet a [name_u]Bryn[/name_u]. It’s in the same lane as names like [name_u]Bran[/name_u] or [name_m]Brendon[/name_m], or [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] in my opinion.
I’m sure it wont be everyones cup of tea, but I personally happen to love it. If you’re still unsure, you could always use a more masculine sounding middle with it!
(also if you’re looking for a longer version, Brynden is an option! though that may seem a little too trendy for your tastes)
I have never heard of [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] on a boy but I am digging it!!! I also live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and think that it falls in line with [name_m]Bryan[/name_m]’s and [name_u]Barrett[/name_u]’s.
Welshie here. I love [name_u]Bryn[/name_u]. I think its cute, but masculine and strong enough to work for all ages. [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] as a girls name just sounds weird to us, much like [name_u]North[/name_u] Americans using [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] (spelled as [name_u]Reece[/name_u]) for girls. They are definitely boys names here.
I love [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] for a boy! Since it’s not hugely popular for a girl I think it could totally work for a boy. It has a rugged softness to it, kind of like [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
I’m from the UK and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] feels very boyish to me. [name_f]My[/name_f] first association with it is actually the rather loveable Uncle [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] from [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] & [name_u]Stacey[/name_u]!
I love [name_u]Bryn[/name_u], and it’s perfect on a boy for me, especially as I’m welsh, and can’t see it an a girl . [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] also means hill in welsh which is pretty cool
@tallemaja - I was a bit worried about getting mistaken for the wrong gender, my sister used to get that with her name (often confused for [name_u]Michael[/name_u], even though her name is spelled [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]) but she said it was easy enough to get accustomed to? I just don’t know if that’s something I’d want to have happen. It’s something to consider for sure! Thank you!
@regionlatbest - Thank you I like it for both genders, honestly, but I think I do prefer it a bit for a boy (especially since S/O and I seem to like Welsh names - [name_f]Bethan[/name_f], [name_f]Cerys[/name_f] and [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] are high on our girls list and the only boys name we really have agreed on is [name_u]Morgan[/name_u]!). Middle names would probably be something classic paired with [name_m]John[/name_m] as it’s a family name for S/O’s family! (Unless we had a [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] first )
@QuirkFlower - That’s awesome that you’ve met one here! That does make me feel a bit better about using it actually. Thank you!
@DayJoy - Thank you! I like [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] too actually!
@greyblue - That’s a fair point! I’ve only met one female [name_f]Brynlee[/name_f], but no Brynns of either gender.
@floatinthesky - I forgot about [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] and [name_u]Stacey[/name_u]! I’ve seen a couple of episodes, but I am vaguely familiar with the character It wasn’t one that was shown too often here, I don’t think?
@LadyMacbethWho - Thank you It is more feminine here, but I do still love it, and it honours my mom’s family a bit, as they’re pretty proudly Welsh (She’s the only child of her siblings not born in the UK lol).
I love [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] for a boy. I personally have the combo [name_u]Edison[/name_u] [name_m]Albert[/name_m] [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] on my own list. The only reason it’s not in as a first name on my own list is because there is no nickname options for it. I don’t think it is too feminine at all I think it’s quite masculine. I also love the Welsh connection too.
I’m from the US and I think [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] could work for either gender. I usually think of it as a girl’s name only because that’s how I was first introduced to it, but knowing it’s traditionally a Welsh boy name helps me see it on a boy, as well.
