Let's talk about Cas

I’m in love with the name [name_m]Cas[/name_m]. The trouble is, I can’t decide how I would use it. I’ve considered adding just [name_m]Cas[/name_m] to my list; it’s #38 in the Netherlands, and it doesn’t seem too strange for an American boy. I also like [name_m]Cas[/name_m] as a nickname, but I’m not overly fond of the obvious choices - [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] (just doesn’t feel right to me), [name_m]Cassius[/name_m]/[name_m]Cassian[/name_m] (dislike the “sh” pronunciation), and [name_m]Casper[/name_m] (I actually do love this, but [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] has more meaning to me). The other option is Castiel, which I love, but I worry that it’s too fangirlish. Today’s blog post has me considering [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u], but even on a guy it feels dated to me.

I’m not really concerned about [name_m]Cas[/name_m] or any longer form fitting in with the names in my signature. I’m just looking for names I love. Does anyone have any ideas? Can you sell me on just [name_m]Cas[/name_m] or one of the longer forms? Maybe there’s something I haven’t thought of? Thanks, ladies!

I think the nn [name_m]Cas[/name_m] or [name_m]Cas[/name_m] as the entire name is wonderful for a boy! My favorite [name_m]Cas[/name_m] long form would have to be [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] or [name_m]Cassius[/name_m].

Have you considered? [name_m]Castor[/name_m] or [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]?

I love the nn [name_m]Cas[/name_m] on a boy ( althought i slightly prefer the spelling [name_m]Cash[/name_m] ) . My favorite [name_m]Cas[/name_m] names are [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] & [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] .

Hmm, [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]… beautiful name, but not really my style. [name_m]Castor[/name_m] just makes me think of castor oil. Any more thoughts on [name_m]Cas[/name_m] or a longer name with [name_m]Cas[/name_m] as a nickname?

I’ve run into a similar problem; love [name_m]Cas[/name_m] but for one reason or another can’t use the tradition long forms. Part of me wonders whether it could be a stretch nn for [name_m]Charles[/name_m]… a real stretch… too far?

I think [name_m]Cas[/name_m] could totally work for [name_m]Charles[/name_m]! It’s no different than [name_m]Jim[/name_m] for [name_u]James[/name_u].

I don’t really think that Castiel is too fangirlish. Supernatural is more of an underground hit, and likely people that would recognize the name would actually love it, not be like “oh, that’s the dude from Supernatural!” It wouldn’t be the equivalent of naming your daughter [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and then having everyone be like “isn’t that the chick from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]?” regardless of whether they have read the books or not. I don’t know if that made sense or if it was word-salad. Basically, I would be surprised if a lot of non-Supernatural watchers know that it’s the name of the Supernatural character. I think you’d be fine. Hell, [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] was on Sup too, and that’s a NB fave.

I actually considered [name_m]Charles[/name_m] nn [name_m]Cas[/name_m] at one point. It’s clever, but since I pronounce [name_m]Charles[/name_m] as one syllable it doesn’t really “click” to me.

I actually don’t know anyone that says [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] or [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] as cash-uh etc. They all say cass-ee-us or cass-ee-an. I like it so much better that way and I think it’s perfectly legit.

Otherwise, maybe:

Casandro – hero’s brother
Cassander – <3
Casca – old
Casey
Cashel
Casiano
Casimir – <3
Cassiel
Casta – pure
Castor
Licas – wolf – lie-cas
Lucas
Nicasio
Zoticas – full of life – varient form of Zoticus (Greek)

@[name_u]Angel[/name_u]: Thanks for the ideas! I was actually flipping through K.M. Sheard’s Complete Book of Names earlier, and she had the pronunciations for [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] and [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] listed as “cass” instead of “cash.” I might reconsider now.

If you really want a longer form, I’d be most in favor of [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. I think [name_m]Cas[/name_m] can work well on its own but I’d spell it [name_u]Cass[/name_u] just so it feels more complete.

I like [name_m]Cassiel[/name_m] more than Castiel. [name_m]Cassiel[/name_m] is, btw, a legit Hebrew name, as opposed to Castiel which is from Supernatural and also reminds me of Castile soap.

On a boy I prefer [name_u]Casey[/name_u] to [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u], and vice versa for girls, but I have no real reason to justify that.

[name_m]Cas[/name_m] and [name_m]Cash[/name_m] are pronounced differently. [name_m]Cas[/name_m] is like cass and cash has an ‘h’ sound at the end.

I, too, pronounce [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] and [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] with the “cass” sound, not “cash”. @allythus makes a good point that [name_u]Cass[/name_u] seems more complete than [name_m]Cas[/name_m].

Are you pronouncing [name_m]Cas[/name_m] like ‘CAZ’? Sorry, I’m just terrible at pronunciations… I actually think that [name_m]Cas[/name_m] just on its own is amazing, and, although I like [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] and [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] well enough, would prefer it on its own. In fact, I think it works really well with the other names in your signature, the only problem being that [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]. You say [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] has more meaning to you - are you a ‘nicknamey’ person? Would [name_m]Cas[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] be something to consider? Only because, being a common nickname for a legitimate form of [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] (as you know!), it might be a way to kill two birds with one stone. Hopefully you’ll get to put it on there somewhere - it’s one I love, but a close family member is called [name_m]Cas[/name_m] (just [name_m]Cas[/name_m], actually, so it can work in real life), and [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] was my compromise. Good luck!

[name_m]Cassiel[/name_m] is lovely too, but I think I’d end up saying Castiel more often than not. Hmm.

I pronounce it with an S, not a Z. I’ll have to think about [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] nn [name_m]Cas[/name_m]…

I don’t have any other suggestions, it sounds like pp’s have covered all the [name_m]Cas[/name_m] names I’ve considered. Big time [name_m]Cas[/name_m] fan here (the name and THE [name_m]Cas[/name_m]- swoon!). We’re going with [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] ourselves. I think [name_m]Cas[/name_m] feels a little too short as a first myself, but there’s nothing wrong with it. I go back and forth on the Castiel thing. On the one hand, yep, it’s a little fan-girlish. On the other hand, pp who mentioned that most people wouldn’t get the reference is right. Castiel isn’t like naming your child [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] or [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] or something. Only fans would recognize it, and I can only speak for myself, but if I ever met a Castiel I’d have the hugest grin on my face. I mean, cheek splitting grin, and I’d probably want to shake his parent’s hands or give them a high five or something.

You’re not the only one.

Alright, I’m closing this up. I think every possible [name_m]Cas[/name_m] name has been suggested, so I have some good options to consider now. Thanks, ladies!
