Lewis for a girl?

[name_m]Lewis[/name_m] is a family name and we’ve always considered it a first name for a boy. I’m wondering though, how about [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] for a girl? I love how crisp of a name it is, and with [name_u]Lou[/name_u] as a nn, I think its adorable. Thoughts?

I love it! One of my favourites for a girl is [name_m]Louis[/name_m] so I don’t see why you couldn’t use [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]! it’s cute and I love the nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u]!

Personally I love names with a family significance however I would use [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] in the middle name slot for a girl teamed with something very feminine like [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] or [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]

I personally think it’s very cute! She would fit right in with all the little girls named [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] right now, but it also has potential for feminine nicknames if she would prefer to go by something more “girly.” If [name_u]Louise[/name_u] nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u] or [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is a “girl” name then what’s so different about [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]?

Super cute!

I could see it working maybe as a double name like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] or [name_u]Anne[/name_u] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m], the way some people in the south use surnames in double names. Maybe it’s because I’m quite neutral on [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] for boys but it lacks any spunk or freshness on girls for me. I’m not a fan; it’s just not at all exciting for me.

Yes! It’s lovely.

I kind of like it! I shares sounds with [name_f]Lois[/name_f] and [name_f]Carys[/name_f] and that makes it work for me

[name_f]My[/name_f] gut reaction was no haha, but thinking about it more I do think it could work for a girl. [name_u]Lou[/name_u] is one of my favorite girl nicknames, and [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] would also be a cute nn for [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]. And I definitely like [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] better for a girl than [name_f]Lois[/name_f]!

Personally, if [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] were a family name for me, I’d probably pick [name_u]Louise[/name_u] or [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] as a name to honor it. You could still do the nickname [name_u]Lou[/name_u] that way. [name_u]Or[/name_u] as others said, it would be a really cute middle name and it seems like masculine/gender neutral middle names are really in right now. But if you love it as a first for a girl, I don’t think it’s unusable.

I think it could make for a good middle name! Especially for a more feminine first name.

I just wonder if it might get quite annoying having everyone mishear it as Louise or Lois, or assume she’s a boy all the time. It’s not like Charlie or Billie, boyish names that are now unisex, it’s completely unheard of on a girl. Some girls might be absolutely fine with that, but some might not, since it’s quite the bold choice to live with. Especially considering how Lewis isn’t a rare name, but a name that everyone knows as male.

If you don’t want to use it as a middle, I second the idea of using Louise or Louisa as a first name to honour Lewis! You might also be able to get away with something like Louie or Louella.

I think it could work, especially with little girls names [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]Devon[/name_u] and [name_u]Connor[/name_u] etc.

I would worry though that she would often be misheard/called [name_f]Lois[/name_f] or [name_u]Louise[/name_u]

To be honest I am not a fan, I would probably go with [name_u]Louise[/name_u] to honour [name_m]Lewis[/name_m].

I would find it annoying to be stuck with a boy’s name. I think it’s fair to say your daughter might too…. So I would either use it in the middle or give her a middle name that she could use instead if she wanted.

Sometimes other people are annoyed or embarrassed when they have expectations that end up being wrong. Id consider the possible reactions of future employers etc before using [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] as a first name for a girl.

Going against the grain here to say it’s quite ugly. [name_u]Louise[/name_u] or [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] would be gorgeous though. As a middle name it can work I suppose though.

So cute!

I think since [name_u]Louise[/name_u] already exists, [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] would be tough for a girl to wear. To me it’s comparable to [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - the feminization is so well-known that calling a girl the masculine version of the name would be confusing to people.

I do agree that [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] would be fine as a girl’s middle name though.

The sound by itself isn’t too far from [name_u]Louise[/name_u], all your doing is stretching a different syllable, I say go for it! I have a unisex name and I absolutely love it, and the nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_u]Louie[/name_u] or even [name_u]Isa[/name_u] makes it even more usable to me, especially because it’s an honor!

I am always all for family names and have been in a similar boat with masculine for a girl.

First, I think it could work, especially with the [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] nn. So if it works for you, use it!

That said, I agree with the others, using as a middle name or a double name might be even better. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have another family name you could pair with it?

I feel like I’m echoing others, but she might spend a lifetime of dealing with the assumption she is a boy or mistaken for [name_u]Louise[/name_u] or [name_f]Lois[/name_f].

The big thing in your favor is the feminine nn!

I absolutely love it! Usually I would dislike the name [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] for a boy, but for a girl it makes it seem newer. Traditionally boys names for girls is becoming popular right now so I don’t think it’s something most other people would find weird. Maybe just use a more feminine middle just in case she wants to have a name that’s more on the girly side
