Lewis: real life experience?

[name_m]Lewis[/name_m] is our current favorite for our first boy, who will be here soon. We love the name, and the nn [name_m]Lewie[/name_m], but would love to hear anyone’s real world experience with this name particularly as it relates to practical issues with its more popular forms, [name_m]Louis[/name_m] and [name_m]Luis[/name_m] (in the US). [name_m]Will[/name_m] everyone assume his name is spelled [name_m]Louis[/name_m] on hearing it? How burdensome is this? Our surname is already a variant of a more common surname (eg [name_m]Jorden[/name_m]), so I’m having last minute doubts about giving him two names he will have to spell for everyone.

That said, I know no name is perfect, and I’ve had doubts about every name on our list at some point or another. I’d just be nice to hear some thoughts on your experiences with this name, whatever that may be – encouragement and/or cautionary tales are welcome!

I knew a few [name_m]Louis[/name_m] who pronounced it [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] not [name_u]Lou[/name_u]-E! Personally I think [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] is so intuitive in its spelling. I just watched a video today about a name-nerd who took a survey of a bunch of teachers asking what they find difficult with student names. Mostly it’s names that have creative spelling like classic names that replace the i’s with y’s that they see kids struggle with because it’s not common place.

But [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] is a name that has many known spellings. It’s a simple fix and won’t be an issue of pronunciation like [name_m]Louis[/name_m] (above like [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]/louE)

I think you’ve chosen a great name! It’s not overly popular but very handsome and sweet.

I have an Uncle [name_u]Lou[/name_u], so it doesn’t feel quite fresh to me yet. However, it’s a perfectly handsome name! You will tun into issues with spelling and pronunciation, but it’s a familiar name, at least.

I met a little boy who was maybe around 8 named [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]. He was the sweetest little boy, with big dimples and big blue eyes. He even said he wanted to marry me, even though I was twice his age at the time lol. I would say most people would resort to either [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] or [name_m]Louis[/name_m]. [name_m]Luis[/name_m] might be pronounced more like LOO-ees. [name_m]Louis[/name_m] even sometimes can be pronounced LOO-ee. I think [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] is a stunning name!

Lewis is a very nice name, and one of those softer, masculine names that is so, so pleasant.

I’m in the US

To me:
[name_m]Lewis[/name_m] = LOO-iss
[name_m]Louis[/name_m] = LOO-ee
[name_m]Luis[/name_m] = loo-EES

I know some people pronounce Louis as Lewis (a pet peeve of mine tbh), but Lewis is the most intuitive spelling for the pronunciation you’re going for.

I know SO MANY boys/men called [name_m]Lewis[/name_m], but I’m in the UK. I’d intuitively spell it like that unless you were hispanic, but I say [name_m]Louis[/name_m] like [name_u]Louie[/name_u].

When I was a kid I knew a [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] and a [name_m]Luis[/name_m]. I actually knew [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] first and [name_m]Luis[/name_m] a little later. I much prefer the [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] spelling since it reminds me of [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m] rather than [name_m]Louis[/name_m] the XIV.

Also, I’m in the US and all these spellings sound the same where I live. Unless you’re pretending to be French. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I wouldn’t really worry about minor misspellings. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and even though it is probably the most common spelling people will still misspell it a bunch of different ways. Most of the time if the spelling is important you have to spell it out even if your name should be easy to spell. [name_f]My[/name_f] last name could be spelled multiple ways from how it sounds phonetically, and is similar to a much more common last name and I’ve never considered my name to be a burden.

Yes, it’s interesting [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] has been so much more popular in the UK, and also interesting that for some reason [name_m]Louis[/name_m] has been more common in the US than [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] going back to the 1880s. I’ve been wondering why that is.

Great perspective, thanks!

Louis to me is pronoucned lu-ee so if someone introduced themselvesnas lu-is, I’d assume it was spelled [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]

The most recent [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] I met was happy and kind and he wore the name well

Lew-is, pronunciation, I think it’s spelled [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] because of [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m]. [name_m]Louis[/name_m] I pronounce as [name_u]Louie[/name_u].

I’m in the US and [name_m]Louis[/name_m]/Lewis is pronounced the same where I am, where as [name_m]Luis[/name_m] would be Loo-EES.
Personally I like the look of [name_m]Louis[/name_m] better but I know that can cause some pronunciation issues.

Over all though I LOVE the name [name_m]Louis[/name_m] and think it’s a great name!

I adore the name [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]! I’ve loved it since I was a girl reading [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables books. Then a nice boyfriend has it as his middle name, then Inspector [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] on British TV. All positive associations.

I don’t know any, but I teach 4th-8th graders so there may be some coming up.

Re: pronunciation. Your son may prefer to go by [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] or [name_m]Lew[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Lewie[/name_m]. If he does prefer the nn [name_m]Lewie[/name_m] (or if his friends do), he might sign things by his legal name of [name_m]Lewis[/name_m].

Anyway, as far as I can see, most names get mispronounced or misspelled frequently anyway. Luckily, once people know how to spell his nickname, it will be easy to remember not like a long gorgeous Celtic name with wild spelling.
