DH actually came across it and told me. He said it was a character from some video game (I don’t remember which one). I don’t know if it’s an actual name or just made up for the game, so I actually have no idea what its origins are.
I also say it as [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-are-uh. It is quite beautiful! I dare say I like it more than [name_f]Liora[/name_f] or [name_f]Eliora[/name_f]. The -[name_f]Ora[/name_f] ending just isn’t appealing to me. Made up or not it’s gorgeous! It is familiar too thanks to [name_f]Liora[/name_f]. I wouldn’t worry about liar.
That is the character and the game (Mass Effect) the name is from. A scientist/doctor/researcher. Not a bad character.
I couldn’t find where it came from. But one site suggests that it is a derived from [name_f]Lara[/name_f] and or [name_f]Liora[/name_f]. Also, it says that it is a common surname. I do not know how true any of that is because it looked like a sketchy name site.
Its good to know that the character isn’t a bad one, since there is a big chance she’s the only namesake
And I see that you have Liara in your signature, I’m glad I’m not the only one that likes it. because we really are considering putting it on our main list.
@millia I put it in my list because of this thread. I really like it. However, any listed under [name_f]Lil[/name_f] Ladies, GP, or [name_f]Lil[/name_f] Gents are only names that I have a great fondness for. All of my children’s names are already used or set in stone.
It really is a lovely name! If you do decide on it please let us know!
It is indeed pronounced [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-are-uh (I wasn’t sure at first, but I just looked at a few videos of mass effect featuring Liara, and that was how they pronounced it). It’s nice to see that pronunciation won’t be an issue.
As ‘liar’ isn’t said in the pronunciation (assuming it’s lee-ARR-ruh/lee-[name_m]AH[/name_m]-ruh, same thing) then I see no issue. It’s sweet, reminds me of [name_f]Liana[/name_f]… Which I like.
I was curious about this name when I saw it in the made-up names topic, because I always thought it was a legitimate name hehe
It was used for a character in a brazilian soap opera a couple years ago, and it’s now in Portugal’s list of approved names, so my guess is that it’s not so made-up after all, though I’m not sure of its origins. Curiously enough, when I googled “Liara - meaning”, I couldn’t find any concrete answers, but when I repeated the search in portuguese, I found many websites listing its meaning as “lady of the night”, with unknown origins (presumably, indigenous). I’m not sure if any of those sites are reliable sources, though.
I’ve met a Liara (or Eliara, nn Liara, I’m not sure) once, and she wore it well!
It’s a lovely name! I pronounce it like [name_f]Chiara[/name_f], but with a L. I think its similarity to other familiar names + its exotic flair make it a very appealing choice!
