I’m looking for girls’ names that have a similar feel as [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]. Names don’t have to be the same origin, but rather the same vibe.
I like that [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] are strong sounding and almost abrupt but with an element of sophistication. They definitely aren’t frilly, but they’re feminine. I like more consonants than vowels, especially since we have a vowel heavy last name.
Others that I’m considering: [name_f]Elinor[/name_f], [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
I’m not currently expecting. Hubby and I have two boys and have never been able to agree properly on a girl’s name. If the next one is a girl, I want to be ready with some new suggestions!
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] comes to mind right away! Also, the old actress [name_f]Inger[/name_f] Stevens has had me really liking the name [name_f]Inger[/name_f] lately.
Great Suggestions! Thank you, thank you. Here are those that I’m adding to my list.
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Elinor[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_u]Vivien[/name_u]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] - too linked to [name_u]Tristan[/name_u]?
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] - I love it but a friend used it recently. What about [name_f]Elin[/name_f]?
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
I guess I definitely like shorter names too. I’m hoping I finally found our style and next time we won’t be debating girl names right up until the end!
What about [name_f]Elka[/name_f] / [name_f]Elke[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]? [name_f]Elin[/name_f] feels more vowel heavy to me which is something you said you wanted to avoid.
Hmmm. I still like [name_f]Elin[/name_f]. Is it vowel heavy? Maybe I don’t know what I like.
I also like [name_f]Greer[/name_f]. Its so fabulous. I’d love to meet one, but it seems like such a daring choice to me, I’m not sure if I could do it. What about [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]?
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f] are pretty awesome. Other berries have posted such awesome suggestions. Have you looked at the Nameberry Clunky but cool girls names? I think it might have names that you like.
As for the question of [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], I love it! [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is actually one of my favorite girls names, unfortunately my DH said absolutely no, so would love to have someone else use it one day.
I used both [name_f]Greta[/name_f] (first name) and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] (middle name, although it was her first name for the first 4 months of her life!) for my daughters, so it was funny to read your title. I have three girls - [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maren[/name_f]. I love strong but timeless and feminine names.
I adore [name_f]Elin[/name_f] and would have loved to use it for my third, but it is too close to [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. Some other favorites of mine were [name_f]Marta[/name_f] ([name_f]Maren[/name_f]'s name up until she was born), [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Signe[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f], but my husband vetoed the last three.
Wow, norskelove - I have major sibset envy! [name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_f]Maren[/name_f]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have trouble getting the right pronunciation out of people?
I also like the suggestion of [name_f]Marta[/name_f]!
Aww, thank you!
We pronounce [name_f]Maren[/name_f] the Scandinavian way – mah-ren (like the beginning sound of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]), although I do like both pronunciations. We get it pronounced mare-in once in a while, but most actually pronounce it mah-ren in my area (I live in an area with a lot of Swedish/Norwegian/Danish ancestry). I am guessing that most pronounce it [name_f]Mare[/name_f]-in in other parts of the US, though.
I knew pronunciation would be an issue with her name, but it hasn’t been bad, people catch on quickly, and we get a lot of compliments on her name. I still have a huge soft spot for [name_f]Marta[/name_f] – it was the front runner until she was born, but it didn’t suit her as I had hoped, and was a little too close in sound to [name_f]Greta[/name_f] for my comfort (we also really wanted to find a name without the “a” ending for girl #3…[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] would have been perfect if I hadn’t already used it). So we looked for something similar in sound to [name_f]Marta[/name_f], with a Norwegian vibe, and found [name_f]Maren[/name_f]
