Liking this name, but how to spell it?!

We’re expecting our second son, and picking a name seems so much harder this time around!

We like the name “ARE-iss”, but how would you spell it to ensure that pronunciation??

[name_f]Aris[/name_f]?
Arys?
Aras?

Would using a double “r” be better? I wouldn’t want it pronounced “[name_f]AIR[/name_f]-iss”

I think the male spelling would be [name_m]Ares[/name_m], like the Greek war god! [name_m]Just[/name_m] beware, some people might be inclined to pronounce it [name_m]Aries[/name_m] ([name_f]Air[/name_f]-ees), like the zodiac sign. I really don’t think there’s any foolproof was you can spell this name, especially if you live in an English speaking country where the [name_f]Air[/name_f]-ees pronunciation is so prevalent.

I prefer [name_m]Ares[/name_m] or [name_m]Aries[/name_m]. I especially pronounce [name_m]Ares[/name_m] like “ARE-iss”.

[name_f]Aris[/name_f]!! And it actually is a boy name.
I would not pronounce [name_m]Ares[/name_m] like [name_f]Aris[/name_f].
Aras would be Are-ass to me and not Are-ee-ss

[name_f]Aris[/name_f] for your preferred pronunciation.

Depending on where you live, Arys might not be immediately intuitive for people reading his name. Aras likewise might create some initial confusion, and I personally wouldn’t immediately read “-ras” as “-riss”.

[name_m]Aries[/name_m] and [name_m]Ares[/name_m] both end in an “-eez” sound for me.

As to the double r, I don’t think it’s necessary. One r does the job perfectly well on its own.

Keep in mind people might end up calling him [name_f]Air[/name_f] Ass as guys tend to make up nicknames.

Yep, [name_f]Aris[/name_f] seems to be the most natural spelling.

Like the car Yaris, but without the Y.
