[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I are both [name_f]British[/name_f] and live in the UK. We have looked back on our family trees and seen the name [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] is used on both sides and so have decided to use it as a middle name for our baby if it is a girl.

However I have since seen the spelling [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] too. I would like to use the most common/traditional spelling to hopefully avoid her having a lifetime of correcting people.

If you heard this name in the UK, how would you assume it is spelt?
I’m not in the UK myself, but [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is most familiar here in the US! [name_f][/name_f] I do like [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] more, but I would assume [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] would have the fewest issues.
I find Lillian more intuitive and the spelling I feel more commonly. I’m in England. Lovely name. However I would use the spelling within your family tree as I feel that would feel more sentimental.

That said, since it’s a middle, I don’t think it matters so much if you wanted to use the form on your family tree [name_f][/name_f]- she’s less likely to need to correct it than if it was her first name
I would use [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] for the middle spot as it’s an honour, and the main purpose is to connect your child/ your kid’s name to your ancestors. If it were in first, I’d probably say [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] as more common and definitely a Lill sound. But second spot, the one your family used.
[name_f]Lilian[/name_f]: it is actually not from [name_f]Lily[/name_f], howevery, according to most etymology, but from [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]Lileas[/name_f] as a name which (less clearly) is attributed as coming from [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] by some but is the Scottish Gaelic for lilies.
