Liliane

What is the general opinion of [name_f]Liliane[/name_f]? It is said lil-ee-AHN and is the french form of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. Its quite a dated name in [name_f]France[/name_f] but I love the look of it and the sound more than [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. Is [name_f]Liliane[/name_f] just too confising?

[name_f]Ebony[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Liliane[/name_f], but I do think it might be too confusing. It’s more like leel-YAHN in [name_m]French[/name_m], or even lee-lee-ahn, but I do think it’s gorgeous regardless. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister is taking [name_m]French[/name_m] and [name_f]Liliane[/name_f] is her “[name_m]French[/name_m] name”, so I’ve thought of using it in her honor. I like [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Liliane[/name_f], personally. I think it’s pretty, but I’m not sure I’d use it. I seem drawn to [name_f]Liliana[/name_f]/[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]/[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] in general, more.

Thanks [name_u]Ash[/name_u], I got that pronunciation of behind the name

I like the look of [name_f]Liliane[/name_f], but I would automatically pronounce it [name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f], as I don’t take/know [name_m]French[/name_m] and have never met anyone with this name. I do like the real pronunciation though.

Thank you!!

I agree with you, I like [name_f]Liliane[/name_f] much more than [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. It is prettier aesthetically.

thanks giinkies

I studied [name_m]French[/name_m] all through high school (though still rubbish at it) and I would have pronounced it lee-lee-ahn at first glance, but I’ve never been great with pronunciation.

[name_f]Liliane[/name_f] hits that sweet spot of being familiar but unusual and a touch exotic. It’s a bit sweeter and daintier than [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], but not super-frilly like [name_f]Lilianna[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] problem with [name_f]Liliane[/name_f] is that I associate it with [name_f]Liliane[/name_f] Bettencourt, the cosmetics(?) heiress. She’s been suspected of shady dealings with political funding, so not a good association. Not sure that’s a problem anywhere outside [name_f]France[/name_f] though, I just follow the news really closely!

Very pretty version of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]!

Thank you!

I think [name_f]Liliane[/name_f] and its [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation are much prettier than [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. I knew a very nasty [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] growing up so I have a negative assocation with that name. [name_f]Liliane[/name_f] is soft, feminine and sophisticated with loads of Gallic charm. I don’t really care if it’s “hot” in [name_f]France[/name_f] or not because some of the names in [name_f]France[/name_f]'s top ten are really not [name_m]French[/name_m] anyway (I’m looking at you [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Jade[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] :)).

Thanks for this [name_f]Ebony[/name_f], something dawned on me after reading this thread.
[name_f]My[/name_f] grandmothers name is [name_f]Bibiana[/name_f] and I always thought of [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] to honor her as the names are related and similar to each other (replacing the B with the V). Now I’m thinking I can even use [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] as it is basically replacing the b with the l.

I don’t mind it at all - I think it’s rather beautiful. But, honestly, I also think [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] are beautiful.

For me personally I think I put [name_f]Liliane[/name_f] in the same box with Welsh Lilwen - names I really like, but suspect the people around me will think are me mumbling or trying to get a pretentious pronunciation out of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know what I mean? I’m not trying to be a jerk.

I would have pronounced it the way you said and that is what came to mind when I saw it, apart from [name_m]French[/name_m] lessons in 2 years of high school I also have no [name_m]French[/name_m] experience or background so I think it might be okay. It is a pretty name, much less common than [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] but I like it better. It sounds more sophisticated and lady-like [name_f]IMO[/name_f]

Giinkies your welcome :))
Thanks striped socks
Thank you [name_u]Aza[/name_u] I don’t have any french background or experience
