Lilith

Ok, so I’ve been loving [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] lately, as while I’m not anyway religious, I want to know how usable it is. Because I did a brief research and asking some of my friends that are religious, say that they see no problem with it themselves. But I want to know is it usable, and any mn suggestions you have would be amazing. Right now I have [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. TIA!

I think its pretty useablle. And [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is gorgeous

I think the Lilith stories come from Jewish Midrashic texts. It’s a pretty sound, but the character of Lilith is a she-demon who eats her babies, if I remember correctly!

Edit: To flesh out my answer more (if Nameberry lets me edit, always a coin toss!) I think it comes down to whether the historical and cultural associations (Midrashic texts aren’t religious scriptures, they’re more like folktales) behind a name are important to you. To me they’re a BIG part of the fascination of names. It’s not just about the sound and rhythm, it’s also examining the associations that collection of sounds has. It’s art, and sociology, and history (the best combo). Even if a name’s history doesn’t matter to you, it’s still there and will influence other people’s impressions of it if they’re familiar. But there’s certainly a number of parents choosing Lilith despite the folktale character–it’s in the 300s in the US chart!

I love [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]! And [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is sooo pretty

I’m also not religious for reference, but I do understand it has some pretty mixed opinions based on its religious association. Though I find it a bit sad when people say such harsh things about this name for that reason. It’s not as if the whole world follows the exact same religion. It doesn’t seem fair to deem a name unusable or bad for someone just because it has a negative association in a faith the other person doesn’t even follow. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my opinion I guess. ANYWAY I personally find it’s perfectly usable and very pretty!

Personally I wouldn’t use [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] I find the religious connotations (especially as someone with a Jewish background) too much I wouldn’t want my child to carry such a potentially challenging name. Furthermore for me meanings of names are important I wouldn’t want my child to look up her name and find it means ‘ghost; night monster’ just like I wouldn’t want my own name to have that meaning. So personally I wouldn’t want to use [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. However I think it depends on what is important to you if meaning/religious connotations aren’t important or the feminine badass twist is really appealing then I don’t think the name is so unusable that you shouldn’t go ahead with it.

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is very elegant :white_heart:

I hadn’t heard of the associations and just liked the name! However, now I know that it might be controversial, I wouldn’t personally use it. Depends on your opinion though, and it is a beautiful name. Maybe using Lilly and Meredith or two other names with similar sounds could give you the sound and look that you want without the negative connotations. Hope this helps somewhat!

In feminist Jewish tradition, [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] has a whole other symbolic meaning. In fact, there’s even a terrific Jewish magazine called [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. I think it depends on where you fall, but if you’re Christian/other, what difference does it make? [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] isn’t even in the [name_u]Christian[/name_u] Bible, as far as I know. I do know that you can’t use [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] as a Hebrew name (there’s a rabbinical book of Hebrew names you can and cannot use at a naming ceremony or at a bris), but if you’re not Jewish, it doesn’t make any difference.

You can look up the feminist retellings of [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. She’s a strong figure in those.

For me, it comes down to this: I wouldn’t want my child’s name to be SO controversial and SO polarizing to SUCH a large group of people (actually, several different groups of people). It’s not that it’s not pretty, it’s not that it isn’t associated with your own belief system… it’s that the negative connotation is SO negative and off-putting. It doesn’t pass the “would I want this name for myself?” test. I wouldn’t like eyebrows being raised and ideas being assumed about my background because of my name, I wouldn’t want to look up the meaning and the legends and see such evil stuff.
There are names people don’t like, think are trashy, dumb, ugly, whatever. I just feel like that’s different from “controversial & polarizing & associated with darkness/evil”.

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is definitely usable. It’s only increasing in popularity these days the demon isn’t stopping anybody. Last year it moved up to #267. There are some good things about it but there are also bad things. [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is beautiful.

I’d say it’s usable, especially if you’re not religious and its background doesn’t hold any meaning to you.
We’ve head that discussion a few times before, it was quite interesting, if you want to check it out I think you have to search in either the Hot Takes thread or the Name Rants thread.

All I can think of is [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] on[name_m]Frasier[/name_m] so while I really dislike it, it seems usable for someone who loves it.

Personally, [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is a no for me… I am not Jewish, but the associations of who [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] was is not an appealing reference I’d like my daughter to share! I would opt for Liliana/Lilia or [name_f]Lilibet[/name_f] myself, but if [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] didn’t have such negative connotations, I could see the appeal - it’s sort of like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] + [name_f]Edith[/name_f]! I think it definitely comes down to personal preference, but like other religious women with not so great connotations (at least within that religious sphere) like [name_f]Jezebel[/name_f] and [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], I would not use it personally.

Clearly, that doesn’t mean people DON’T use it, though - there are thousands of little Delilahs nowadays, and lots of others love [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. So it’s your call, but as a religious [name_u]Christian[/name_u], I’m definitely put off by it enough that I wouldn’t go there myself.

Good luck!

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is one of my all-time favorite names, but I actually chose not to use it because [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], and the natural nickname [name_f]Lily[/name_f], are too popular for me  So it’s definitely usable because people are using it! (I found a great replacement for my baby girl that is still strong and dark :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:)

I think [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is most definitely usable. I do get that there are religious connotations, but I don’t think that [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] would be an outrightly offensive or upsetting name to use, especially if you aren’t religious! I don’t think those connotations must automatically render a name unusable. [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] feels like a classic vintage name to me. I love [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]!
