Lily Allen's Daughter!

After waiting for what seems like forever, [name]Lily[/name] [name]Allen[/name] has announced her daughters name: [name]Ethel[/name] [name]Mary[/name]! I like it, I thought it was very unique! What do you think? It’s vintage, but is it too old ladyish?

I’m actually surprised [name]Ethel[/name] wasn’t revived sooner. One hundred years ago, [name]Ethel[/name] was in the top 20 along with choices that would be considered stylish today: [name]Louise[/name], [name]Helen[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Frances[/name], [name]Lillian[/name], and [name]Rose[/name] to name a few. She has a soft sound and the popular -el ending. [name]Ethel[/name] has a decent meaning too: “noble maiden.” With the recent craze for vintage names, I always wonder why [name]Ethel[/name] was considered “too old lady” while [name]Louise[/name] and [name]Frances[/name] started to feel fresh and new again.

[name]Lily[/name] [name]Allen[/name] is so spunky I expected something a little different. Or maybe she just out-hipped the hipsters?! I think the name is just okay. Maybe a fiestier middle name would have done it for me. Like [name]Ethel[/name] Amanita, [name]Ethel[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name], or [name]Ethel[/name] [name]Valentine[/name].

I don’t like it. the combinations sounds old lady-ish to me, I just can’t picture it on a little girl.

I have a very good friend whose name is [name]Ethel[/name]. She is 91 years old and she always says her name is so old fashioned and so glad no one names their babies [name]Ethel[/name] anymore. She obviously never liked her name and I really REALLY doubt [name]Ethel[/name] will ever be a name any girl would like or want to have. Poor baby!

I actually really love it! To me, it’s so much better than “[name]Buddy[/name]”, “[name]Bear[/name]” or “[name]Heavenly[/name] Hiraani” etc. It is an older lady name, but that’s how all of those names started out before they were revived. To me, [name]Ethel[/name] has a very hipster feel - that sounds crazy, I know!

Ooh I love it  but then, I’m into the whole old lady name thing. It certainly beats most celeb baby names such as [name]Jamie[/name] [name]Oliver[/name]'s crazily named children.

It suits [name]Lily[/name] [name]Allen[/name] very well in my opinion.
and i read that only 3 babies in the UK last year were named [name]Ethel[/name], so a very underused name then.

I love that she used [name]Ethel[/name]. I also would have preferred something a bit more ‘feisty’ than [name]Mary[/name] as pp suggested. This seems on trend with [name]Tori[/name] Spelling using [name]Hattie[/name], perhaps more celebs will follow suite and the 100 year+ names will become more in vogue with the mainstream.

[name]Ethel[/name] [name]Mary[/name] is a bold and vintage choice and I commend [name]Lily[/name] [name]Allen[/name] for choosing such a rare gem! I thought she would go with something more contemporary and modern but she surprised me! Good for her!

I don’t mind [name]Ethel[/name] (although it wouldn’t be my personal taste), but I think a stronger middle name would really have helped make it more unique.

[name]Ethel[/name] isnt my personal style but I think it was a great choice for [name]Lily[/name] as it is so uncommon and unique but in a vintage way not because it is made up or a colour or number ie [name]Blue[/name] [name]Ivy[/name] etc! [name]Ethel[/name] still sounds very much old-lady to me still but all it takes is a celeb or two to use it and it could become popular again just like other vintage names are now. [name]Mary[/name] is pretty plain next to [name]Ethel[/name] but is kind of sweet at the same time.

My thoughts exactly… it suits [name]Lily[/name] to a tee. She’s all about vintage fashion, she loves being an old-fashioned housewife, of course she was going to pick a vintage name

[name]Ethel[/name] sounds a little clunky now. But then so did [name]Agnes[/name] until [name]Jennifer[/name] [name]Connelly[/name] used it. I think [name]Lily[/name] might turn [name]Ethel[/name] into a hip name again

completely in agrrement.

I think of [name]Ethel[/name] from I [name]Love[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] but I also think it’s great that these maybe clunkier names are being used, [name]Ethel[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name]!

I love the combination! [name]Ethel[/name] [name]Mary[/name] is very vintage and ethereal sounding, which I absolutely adore. Much better than [name]Blue[/name] [name]Ivy[/name]!

I love [name]Ethel[/name] [name]Mary[/name]. But I love old-lady names, so I think this is a gorgeous, unique combo.

No, not a fan at all. I don’t have an issue with “old lady names” but [name]Ethel[/name] just does not sound attractive to my ear at all.

Really interesting. This is one of those “I would have made a joke that this would be the big celeb baby name”. It’s one that strikes me as so old it could never be youthful again. Maybe I’m wrong : D. I do like [name]Esther[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] which are almost there but are just tipping over, so maybe this one is too. I do love [name]Mary[/name] : D.

What on earth is wrong with [name]Ethel[/name]??? It is a lovely name, very sweet and feminine I think it is lovely and totally in line with the [name]Elle[/name] names of today. [name]How[/name] can you say it is clunky with the sweet lilting sound of it??

I think [name]Ethel[/name] is long overdue for renewal it is much nicer than [name]Florence[/name] and [name]Flora[/name] and yet it gets no kudos.

Mamas put [name]Ethel[/name] on your list she deserves it!
