Girl names like Lily that aren’t a plant… I’m hoping to find something more classic, neither retro nor modern or made up.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] feels like a great alternative!
Otherwise maybe…
[name_f]Lizzy[/name_f] / [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] (either as a full name or a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or Eliza)
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Liza[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Tillie[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
I’ve always thought [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] share a lot of the same qualities
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] might also be a good alternative or maybe [name_f]Jill[/name_f]?
[name_f]Lilibet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilium[/name_f]

[name_f]Lindy[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Lana[/name_f]

[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Leda[/name_f]

[name_f]Lilah[/name_f]
You guys are so good at this. See, I like the name [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a shortened form of Elizabeth->Lilibet->Lily, but I can’t get my 5 yo and 4 yo to stop calling the baby [name_f]Lily[/name_f] Pad and it’s annoying. Another thing that doesn’t quite fit right is that the name sounds so soft. I think I like hard consonants… like names that end in T. I don’t want to go too far with that though. I like the name Matilda->Tilly, but ruined any chance I had of using it by naming my very dear pup “Tilly” about 10 years ago. [name_f]My[/name_f] kids remember the dog, so no good there. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is nice, but again, my aunt’s pup. [name_f]My[/name_f] neighbor named their dog [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and he yells at his dog all the time like he had no neighbors. So sad.
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] means lily, so I like that one!
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_u]Billie[/name_u], [name_f]Tillie[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], and [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] are also great phonetic sisters to [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. Perhaps also [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] or [name_f]Lila[/name_f].
Names like Lily…
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f]
[name_f]Leah[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_u]Lanie[/name_u]
[name_f]Nellie[/name_f]
If you like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] but can’t use it, how about [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
Gosh this has reminded me of an Elizabeth at my primary school who was known affectionately as Lilypad! I’ve no idea if she actually liked it or not
How about…
Matilda ‘Mattie’
Elizabeth or Liberty ‘Libby’
Jillian ‘Jilly’
Felicity ‘Lissie’
Harriet ‘Hattie’
Sylvie
Elspeth
Odette
Juliet maybe ‘Lettie’?
Maelie
Nell
April
Lucinda ‘Cindy’ or ‘Lulu’ if it’s not still too close to Lucy
I know you said you didn’t want a plant name, but I quite like Violet ‘Villy’… Villette could also work
[name_f]Kate[/name_f]!
I am too picky when it comes to names. Maybe you guys are also, or maybe you can help me! Individually I like most of the names you suggest… but then i insert them in my sibset or look up the meaning, and I end up crossing them all off.
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] - I don’t love suzie, or susan for the youngest.
[name_f]Libby[/name_f] - follows a [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]. Doesn’t that sound like too much B? “Caleb and Libby”
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] - that sounds like liar when I say it
[name_u]Billie[/name_u], [name_f]Tillie[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Polly[/name_f], [name_f]Lainey[/name_f], Nel/Nelly, sound like nicknames.
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] and [name_f]Villette[/name_f] are bad guys. [name_f]Villette[/name_f] might be a razor brand, I don’t remember.
I feel totally unimpressed by any of the [name_f]Lily[/name_f] sound-alikes, because I just like the simplicity of [name_f]Lily[/name_f] better.
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] means work. [name_f]My[/name_f] other daughter’s name means pearl/treasure. I feel like this baby would be the daughter I liked less if I name her something equally magnificent
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - pretty, but it means sophisticated and that sounds a bit stuck up/haughty for me. Maybe it’s because of a [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] I know.
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] - the movie about a mom with a psychotic personality disorder. I could never use it.
[name_f]Leah[/name_f] means “weak eyes”
I really love [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], but the pronunciation options killed it for me. Same with adeline, adelyn.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] sounds like [name_u]Harry[/name_u].
[name_f]Odette[/name_f] is a swan, and they are mean (swans).
I’m due in [name_f]May[/name_f], so I can’t call her [name_f]April[/name_f]
Our other kids are [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_f]Aurie[/name_f], [name_u]Daniel[/name_u] and [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]. [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] would really throw off the mix haha. I’m Katie/ [name_f]Kate[/name_f].
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] was nixed by my husband who is a LOT less picky.
I can’t do names that begin with J or end in N, because it gets too rhymey with my last name. See, you guys? Too picky! This is our last baby.
I understand if you don’t like it, but I think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] Pad is adorable!
Here are some suggestions based on your other kids names:
Is [name_f]Aurie[/name_f] a nick name? The other names all sound very traditional and well known, and the last two sound biblical but common enough that they wouldn’t have to be associated in that way.
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] or Emilia-- it sounds similar to [name_f]Emily[/name_f], which you mentioned, but I doubt it has the same meaning
Sarah-- classic, matches the other names, especially [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] and [name_u]Daniel[/name_u], and is two syllables like the other names
Clara-- two syllables like the other names, I think it especially matches with [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
Lillian-- you could still use [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a nickname, but wouldn’t have to
Rebecca-- classic, matches the other names
Eleanor-- classic, stylish, matches the other names
Elizabeth-- classic and timeless, matches the other names, and has a ton of nicknames to choose from
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
@Nina_Alexandra_2005 I love where you’re going! Yes, [name_f]Aurie[/name_f] is a nn (Margaret Anne). We call [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] “Cabes.” I loved [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] for all the nn options, so many of which I love. Less so for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but that’s right now the top contender. [name_f]Libby[/name_f] is nice but doesn’t sound right after “Caleb.” I really liked [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but it got so popular here. I feel like I hear the name a ton in this area. We have an aunt [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] who’s not very friendly so that would be tough… but I LOVE that name! [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is okay. It kind of reminds me of a cow. [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] is beautiful, but don’t care for [name_f]Becca[/name_f]. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is lovely too, but in that old grandmotherly way that literally everyone is adopting for their newborns these days! If my last name didn’t start with a J, I’d use [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] for sure, and she’d be the only one in her generation named [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]! You nailed the style I like
@somemelodioussonnet
I like [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] best of the 3.
Oh gosh having read through the thread I can see why you’re struggling! Naming is really hard and when you’ve been through the process before I think it can make it harder.
I haven’t taken in every name mentioned but wanted to provide some suggestions in case they are helpful.
*Elliott, [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] ‘Aurie’, [name_u]Daniel[/name_u], [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] and… *

[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps
How about [name_u]Camille[/name_u] or [name_f]Camila[/name_f], nickname “Mila”.
[name_u]Camille[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is gorgeous.
