Lily variations

The middle name I have picked out is [name_f]Lily[/name_f], named after my MIL. But it’s feeling overused and I don’t know if I want a direct link to her name. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to make [name_f]Lily[/name_f] interesting? We already promised this as the middle name but I’m kind of wishing we hadn’t. Anyone know of [name_f]Lily[/name_f] in a different language or maybe a double name that can look like one name?

Only one that i think hasn’t been mentioned is [name_f]Lys[/name_f] the french version for [name_f]Lily[/name_f].

I also second [name_f]Liliwen[/name_f]

If you want something obscure then:

[name_f]Araluen[/name_f]
[name_f]Sarojini[/name_f]

[name_u]Will[/name_u] fit the bill based on their meanings [name_f]Araluen[/name_f] has a particularly beautiful meaning.

All the best!

I think as a middle name, [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is very interesting. We’re used to hearing it as a first, but not as a middle. Her contemporaries will often have middles like [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], & Joy–beautiful but very common middles. The fact that hers will be [name_f]Lily[/name_f] could be fun. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have a lovely first name picked out?

You’ve already received a ton of beautiful suggestions, but I’ll add [name_f]Daylily[/name_f], Lilybelle and Leirion (derived from Ancient Greek λείριον, leirion, meaning “lily”).

I’m not sure [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is the problem here. It sounds like you’ve changed your mind about your MIL being a part of the name choice. It’s not wrong if your feelings have changed and you’re allowed to change your mind regardless of what was promised before.

If this is how you’re feeling, I’d kindly suggest telling her now that you’ve changed your minds. It will be disappointing for her but that’s ultimately for her to deal with, not you. I know families can be challenging but doing what’s right for you is always worth considering.

I wish you all the best in your decision.

[name_f]Liliana[/name_f] is sort of a double name.
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is a beautiful rare version of the name.
[name_f]Susan[/name_f], [name_f]Susana[/name_f], [name_f]Shoshana[/name_f], and [name_u]Yuri[/name_u] all mean “lily” in different languages.

[name_f]Callalily[/name_f], NN [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is one of my favorite names. Perhaps it might work for you?

I don’t think [name_f]Lileas[/name_f] has been suggested yet. I think that this is pronounced ‘Lee-lus’.

Susannah and all its variations mean lily (and much older, derived from Hebrew) so if you want the lily meaning without being so obviously connected to your mother-in-law, consider:

Shoshana (Hebrew, most ancient in terms of
root/origin I believe)

Susannah/Susanna (my favs)

Susan/Sue/Susie (English variations: classic/simple)

Suzanne/Suzette (French vibe)

Sanna / Sanne (these are Finnish/Norwegian/Dutch variations)

Zuzu (May be too “out there?” But this is a Czech variation)

Lis (the [name_u]French[/name_u] word for lily) could be turned into Lisolette or [name_f]Liesel[/name_f]!
I also love the earlier suggestion of using a type of lily instead of the actual name [name_f]Lily[/name_f].
One of my all time favorite names that might be close enough to appease your MIL is Lïlou. I knew a girl in [name_u]France[/name_u] who’s name is Lïlou and always thought that it was just the cutest
