Linnea

I have a new-ish crush, Berries! What are your thoughts on [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]? For context, I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] but I know it’s very popular in Scandinavia (to which I have no real connection, though my husband did once spend a semester in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u] that he thinks of fondly).

What impressions does it give you? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you imagine a [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] to have any particular characteristics? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]North[/name_u] Americans would have trouble spelling or pronouncing it? Have you ever encountered it out in the world? And just out of curiosity, what would you name a [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]'s siblings?

I pronounce it as [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]-nay-uh, but I’m not sure if that is correct or not (I live in the Midwestern US). I think it’s pretty, though! I’ve only seen it on Nameberry every once in awhile, but would love to meet a [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]! To me, it evokes images of a sweet, bubbly girl with blue eyes, blonde braids, and freckles. As far as siblings, I really don’t know…maybe [name_f]Freya[/name_f] or [name_m]Sven[/name_m]. I’m not familiar with what culture it is from or what names are used in the same are.

I love the name [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]; it’s one of my favorites. I knew a girl in childhood named [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], and I think she had a sister named [name_f]Frances[/name_f]/[name_u]Francis[/name_u]. I am in the US btw and even in kindergarten 20+ years ago no one in my class had a hard time with [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]'s name, that I can remember.

I don’t think there would be any pronunciation issues with that. I pronounce it just like @namegirl3. I live in the US, and I don’t know any or have even heard of any friends of friends with that name (although I’ve heard of it before). It’s pretty! [name_f]Nea[/name_f] or [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] would be cute nicknames.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]! I picture a warm-hearted, cheerful little girl and an optimistic, intelligent lady. [name_u]North[/name_u] Americans will definitely have problems with it, but once you correct them they should pick it up. I’m not sure though because I myself aren’t American, but reading all the experiences with ordinary names from Americans I’m not positive that they will get it straight away. No I have not met anyone with the name, but I hope to! [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] come to mind as a sister for [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] and for a brother probably [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] with the nn [name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_m]Soren[/name_m] for a brother.

Best of luck,

Fluffy

I had this book as a child:

And I have loved the name since then. I think it’s a great choice. And though the obvious pairings for sibling names would be other Scandinavian-inspired names ([name_f]Annika[/name_f], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], etc.), I think it could also pair nicely with a lot of other names that I would describe as romantic/classic sounding (like [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f], etc.), or even more common/contemporary choices like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. No boys’ names are jumping to mind, but my point is I think it’s a name that could be taken in a lot of different directions, so I don’t think you’d be locked into traditionally Scandinavian names with it, unless you wanted to be.

[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] is beautiful! It’s one of my favourite girls’ names.

I think of the children’s book that @halloween_jacqueline mentioned as well.

Very pretty name. I always picture [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]'s sister as [name_f]Elora[/name_f].

I really like [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], although I have it as [name_f]Linnaea[/name_f] on my list for reason. I really love the sound, and I’d imagine a sweet, charming, considerate, and helpful little girl or woman named [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]. I think it’s quite easy to spell and pronounce, or at least it can be easily corrected if necessary. Quite a few names go well with [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], but I’d imagine her to have siblings [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Elke[/name_f]/[name_f]Elka[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], Freyja, or [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Soren[/name_m], [name_m]Taavi[/name_m], [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] (most of those are from my list).

Overall, a very lovely and usable name!

[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] is gorgeous. I pronounce it le-NAY-uh. In my daughter’s playgroup there were sisters named [name_f]Malia[/name_f] and [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] which I always thought was a really pretty sibset.

I like [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]! I’ve only known of one person with that name. She was very cool and kind of quirky. I’d pronounce it [name_f]Linn[/name_f]-AY-a.
