Literary Girl Names w/cute Nicknames

[name]Hi[/name] all,

I’m looking at girl names, but am having problems narrowing my list or deciding if I want completely different names. I currently have a daughter named [name]Ellison[/name] [name]Poe[/name] (nn [name]Ellie[/name] [name]Poe[/name]). Because SO and I are both English teachers, we love the literary connection to [name]Ralph[/name] and [name]Harlan[/name] [name]Ellison[/name] and obviously [name]Edgar[/name] [name]Allen[/name] [name]Poe[/name]. The connection to literary names is something we’d like to carry over to [name]Ellison[/name]'s sibling, whether it be characters or authors. We are pretty set on [name]Scout[/name] as a middle name. I would like it as a first name (as I also liked [name]Poe[/name]), but I think the first name needs to be more substantial. Here are some names being considered, as well as my thoughts thus far. I appreciate any feedback or suggestions!

[name]Juniper[/name] [name]Scout[/name] (nn [name]Juno[/name]) - I think [name]Ellison[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name] sound good as a sib-set. However, I’m concerned that this name is going to be more trendy.

[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Scout[/name] - I’m not sure that I like [name]Scout[/name] as a mn with this one. Also, I have no good nn ideas. Finally, while I love [name]Ophelia[/name], my SO is still a bit concerned with the association and my friends, who don’t even know the literary association, tell me they think of teasing (“I’ll feel ya”)

[name]Isolde[/name] [name]Scout[/name] (nn [name]Izzy[/name]) - Again, not sure [name]Scout[/name] goes with this. Also, are [name]Izzy[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name] as nn too close to one another?

[name]Hadley[/name] [name]Scout[/name] - No nicknames I really like or can think of for this one either. And [name]Ellison[/name] and [name]Hadley[/name]? I’m not sure I like this.

Any suggestions, opinions, etc. are welcome. Thanks in advance!

I like [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Scout[/name] and [name]Hadley[/name] [name]Scout[/name]! I think they both go well with [name]Ellison[/name] [name]Poe[/name].

Running on the assumption that [name]Ophelia[/name] has a [name]Hamlet[/name] association? I think [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Scout[/name] is cute, as in [name]King[/name] Lear, if you wanted another option with a similar feel to [name]Ophelia[/name]. nn [name]Lia[/name]? [name]Hadley[/name] [name]Scout[/name] reminds me of [name]Radley[/name] [name]Scout[/name] which could be a little bit of Mockingbird overkill…! [name]Bronte[/name] [name]Scout[/name] has a very literary feel to it imo. nn could be [name]Bea[/name]?

I love [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Scout[/name] nn [name]Juno[/name]!

The only suggestion I have is what my friend named her daughter –
her name is [name]Waverly[/name] nn [name]Wynn[/name] (not sure if that is a common nickname or if it is just what they came up with!) Either way, she gets compliments all the time!

Another vote for [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Scout[/name]. I love both names, and also had [name]Scout[/name] on my name list but found it hard pairing it up. This fits v v well!
[name]Isolde[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name] are both two of my favourite names, so they would win out over [name]Juniper[/name], were it not for the pairing with [name]Scout[/name]. They both just have such an opposite feeling to the cheeky [name]Scout[/name] to me.
lauren-kay’s suggestion of [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Scout[/name] is also great. That sounds cheeky and has a bit of substance.
Its weird how literally ALL your names have been on my list at some point. Haha
I am also in the literary field (publishing) which may explain it. I love mythological names, also. If it weren’t for the total stigma they would give my children in school, I would go even wilder!

[name]Louisa[/name] [name]Scout[/name]! As in [name]Louisa[/name] [name]May[/name] [name]Alcott[/name].

[name]Ellie[/name] [name]Poe[/name] and [name]Lulu[/name] is adorable

I also like [name]Phoebe[/name] from A Catcher in the [name]Rye[/name], nn [name]Bea[/name]. You may also find these blogs useful:

Good luck

[name]India[/name] [name]Scout[/name] and [name]Ariadne[/name] [name]Scout[/name] are excellent!

[name]Helena[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name], [name]Rosamund[/name], and [name]Imogen[/name] are other Shakespearean choices without all the negative associations of [name]Ophelia[/name]. [name]Viola[/name] is another, but it’s got associations of its own.

I think [name]Ophelia[/name] is very usable. I mean, [name]Juliet[/name] commited suicide too but she is makes for a VERY popular name. Haha!

Sorry I didn’t post what books they were from!

[name]Auden[/name] [name]Scout[/name], [name]Marlowe[/name] [name]Scout[/name], [name]Flannery[/name] [name]Scout[/name] are some other author options.

I’ll focus a little more on author names…really like suggestions of [name]Marlow/name and [name]Auden[/name]…this is a fun project! And [name]Ellison[/name] [name]Poe[/name] is really nice! Since [name]Ellie[/name] has two author names and you like [name]Scout[/name] I wonder if you want to go with two characters? There are some good suggestions going here from that idea and I really like a lot of those options. Congrats and best wishes!

[name]Harper[/name] [name]Scout[/name] is really cute and boyish to go with [name]Ellison[/name] [name]Poe[/name]. Of course [name]Harper[/name] is very trendy, and this might be too much TKAM. Although maybe that’s a plus too. Not any immediate nns.
[name]Austen[/name] [name]Scout[/name] / [name]Austin[/name] [name]Scout[/name] for [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name]? Another boyish name, not sure what nns it has, [name]Ozzie[/name]/Aussie?
[name]Emerson[/name] [name]Scout[/name]? Also trendy and maybe too close to [name]Ellison[/name] although [name]Ellie[/name] and [name]Emmy[/name] are cute if also really matchy.
[name]Faulkner[/name] [name]Scout[/name]? Another nn problem, although [name]Fallon[/name] and [name]Fee[/name] seem plausible.
[name]Tennyson[/name] [name]Scout[/name]? [name]Tenny[/name]? Also maybe too matchy with [name]Ellison[/name].
[name]Alcott[/name] [name]Scout[/name]? [name]Allie[/name] is adorable although very close to [name]Ellie[/name] : D.
[name]Joyce[/name] [name]Scout[/name]? [name]Joyce[/name] is also historically a little boyish I think. These two names run into each other, although nn [name]Joy[/name] is very nice. Could also be [name]Jo[/name] or [name]Josie[/name].
[name]Angelou[/name] [name]Scout[/name]?: [name]Angel[/name], [name]Annie[/name], [name]Angy[/name].
[name]Beckett[/name] [name]Scout[/name]?: [name]Becky[/name], [name]Ettie[/name], though [name]Ettie[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name] is a little close. Nicely boyish with [name]Ellison[/name].
[name]Willa[/name] [name]Scout[/name]: not a last name for once, but rather [name]Willa[/name] Cather. Not so much nicknames, but [name]Willa[/name] is punchy enough on its own.
[name]Hawthorne[/name] [name]Scout[/name]: [name]Thora[/name], [name]Tori[/name]?

Another suggestion: [name]Matilda[/name] ([name]Roald[/name] Dahl) nn [name]Tilly[/name]

Best of luck!

XX

[name]Austen[/name] [name]Scout[/name] is sooo cute…
I also like [name]Bronte[/name] [name]Scout[/name]
and of course [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Scout[/name], and I don’t think you need to worry about that becoming too popular!
But, I do [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ophelia[/name], and a cute nickname would be [name]Fifi[/name] (fee-fee) or [name]Lia[/name]
then there could be [name]Darcy[/name] [name]Scout[/name], as in Mr. [name]Darcy[/name]!
