Literary names for Boys and Girls - Shakespeare + E.A. Poe?

[name]Hi[/name] all

I am not pregnant yet but always thinking of names! Lol! My SO and I are verymuch in love but we don’t have many things that we both find ‘inspirational’, if you know what I mean? Like some couples both have a deep tie to nature or to a certain country. Our name tastes are pretty similar except that where they differ, my taste trends toward Exotic Traditional and his strays toward either Fuddy-Duddy names or Tryndee names.

There are two things we both agree on though: literature and birds. One of the first things we bonded over was a love of [name]Edgar[/name] [name]Allan[/name] [name]Poe[/name] and we both took a class at our college that delved deeply into Shakespearean plays and sonnets. I was looking for some new names to give him (since he dumped my favorite, [name]Olympia[/name], in the MN spot!) and decided to make a list of some unusual, but USABLE, names from [name]Poe[/name] and [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s works.

Which ones do you like, love, dislike, hate, or think are too ‘out there’ to use as names for a baby born in, we’ll say 2013-2014? Last name is [name]HOGAN[/name]. I don’t like the name [name]Juliet[/name].

I love so many of these! I must just say that Florizel was actually a man, but it does work better as a girls’ name, in my opinion.

[name]Bertram[/name] - still very old-man to me…
[name]Caliban[/name] ‘[name]Cal[/name]’ - I like [name]Calvin[/name]…
[name]Corin[/name] (CORE-in) ‘[name]Cori[/name]’ - not a fan of [name]Cori[/name] as a nickname-- plus it sounds like [name]Corinne[/name], the girls’ name
[name]Cornelius[/name] - there is a large possibility he would be teased in school…
[name]Demetrius[/name] - I actually really like it… I’m probably in the minority there.
Donalbain - see [name]Bardolph[/name]
[name]Edgar[/name] - usable

[name]Osric[/name] ‘[name]Oz[/name]’ - I prefer [name]Oscar[/name] for [name]Oz[/name]
[name]Othello[/name] ‘[name]Otto[/name]’ - I think it’s too tied to the play
Pistol - please do not name your child Pistol! It’s awful, even in the middle!
[name]Robin[/name] - seems dated and a little feminine
[name]Ross[/name] - dated
[name]Tamerlane[/name] - I’ve never heard of it…
[name]Theseus[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Midsummer-[name]Night[/name]'s [name]Dream[/name]” - it is kind of close to ‘thesis’
[name]Toby[/name] - I like [name]Tobias[/name].
[name]Usher[/name] - [name]Usher[/name] the rapper is the very first thing I think of.

I like [name]Adrian[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Oliver[/name], and [name]Lysander[/name].

GIRLS:
[name]Adriana[/name] - so pretty!
[name]Annabel[/name] - I love this, too!
[name]Celia[/name] - ditto [name]Annabel[/name] and [name]Adriana[/name]!
[name]Ceres[/name] - would have pronunciation problems…
[name]Cordelia[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name], but I’m not sure it’s usable in real life…
[name]Cymbeline[/name] - really pretty, but I don’t think usable

[name]Raven[/name] - ick. Ravens aren’t even nice birds
[name]Rosalie[/name] - very pretty…
[name]Rosalind[/name] - I love it pronounced rose-a-lind
[name]Rosaline[/name] - would you pronounce it rosa-leen or -line?
[name]Tamora[/name] - I’ve only heard of the author, [name]Tamora[/name] [name]Pearce[/name]
[name]Titania[/name] - love it, but it would be awful for an actual child
Ulalume - could be pretty, in another accent
[name]Ursula[/name] - I like [name]Ursuline[/name]
[name]Valentine[/name] - I like [name]Valentina[/name]
[name]Viola[/name] - really pretty
[name]Virginia[/name] - lots of teasing potential…
[name]Windsor[/name] - I’m not a fan of surnames as first names, especially for girls

I love a lot of the girl’s names, but most of them are way too over the top for an actual child. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Titania[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Perdita[/name], and [name]Cymbeline[/name], but I just can’t see them on a baby. [name]Cordelia[/name], I think, is more usable than the others. For a real child, I love [name]Julia[/name], [name]Iris[/name], [name]Luciana[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name], [name]Adriana[/name], [name]Annabel[/name], and [name]Celia[/name]! What about [name]Miranda[/name] or [name]Cressida[/name]?

Wow that’s a lot to take in! You’ve made quite a list there, [name]Grey[/name]! I will do my best to post comments…

[name]Adrian[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “The [name]Tempest[/name]” : Dignified and handsome but I’m having a hard time imagining it on anyone younger than about 25.

[name]Allan[/name] - [name]Poe[/name]'s mn, adopted from his godfather who raised him : Not really a fan but I can see it’s appeal. I think this would work really well in the mn spot.

[name]Arthur[/name] - [name]Poe[/name]'s novel “The Narrative of [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Gordon[/name] Pym” : I have always loved [name]Arthur[/name]! It’s so distinctive but yet friendly and has lots of great namesakes and the cutest nn [name]Artie[/name].

[name]Auguste[/name] - [name]Poe[/name]'s detective C. [name]Auguste[/name] Dupin, inspired [name]Sherlock[/name] [name]Holmes[/name] : I love [name]August[/name] and [name]Augustine[/name] but I’m not sure I’d spell it [name]Auguste[/name], I can imagine him having to say ‘It’s [name]August[/name] with an E’ everytime people need to spell it. [name]Just[/name] my opinion though.

[name]Balthazar[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name], several plays : A bit too ‘out-there’ for me, would make a very interesting mn though.

[name]Bardolph[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Merry[/name] Wives of [name]Windsor[/name]” : Not a fan.

[name]Bertram[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “All’s Well That Ends Well” : Sounds like an old man name that won’t look out of place in the next few years with a lot of the others coming back into style. Personally not a fan though.

[name]Caliban[/name] ‘[name]Cal[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “The [name]Tempest[/name]” : Rhymes with the Taliban.

[name]Corin[/name] (CORE-in) ‘[name]Cori[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “As You Like It” : Hmmm… sounds a bit feminine to me but I can see it’s appeal and the friendly nn definitely helps.

[name]Cornelius[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Cymbeline[/name]” : I love the creativity of it but can’t see a child pulling this one off, I’m afraid.

[name]Demetrius[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Midsummer-[name]Night[/name]'s [name]Dream[/name]” : Same category as [name]Balthazar[/name] for me.

Donalbain - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Macbeth” : Um I think this is a bit much. I like [name]Donal[/name] though.

[name]Edgar[/name] - double duty: [name]Edgar[/name] A. [name]Poe[/name] and [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]King[/name] Lear” : It sounds so harsh to me, the back to back ‘d’ and ‘g’ and is in the same category as [name]Cornelius[/name] to me. I really do appreciate the meaning it has to you though so I think if you loved it enough it would work as a mn.

[name]Edmond[/name] - double duty: [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]King[/name] Lear” and my grandfather’s MN : I love [name]Edmond[/name] spelt [name]Edmund[/name] more but both are so very handsome! This is definitely a favourite.

[name]Frederick[/name] ‘Reds’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “As You Like It”: [name]Love[/name] the nn Reds! I’ve always had a soft spot for [name]Freddie[/name] but have never fallen in love with [name]Frederick[/name].

[name]Ferdinand[/name] ‘[name]Andy[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Love[/name]'s Labour Lost” : Has an exotic air but still feels friendly and accessible. The nn [name]Andy[/name] is darling.

[name]Iago[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Othello[/name]”

[name]Launce[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Two Gentlemen of [name]Verona[/name]”
[name]Leontes[/name] ‘[name]Leon[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Winter[/name]'s Tale”
[name]Lysander[/name] ‘[name]Andy[/name]/[name]Ander[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Midsummer-[name]Night[/name]'s [name]Dream[/name]”
[name]Oberon[/name] ‘[name]Bear[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Midsummer-[name]Night[/name]'s [name]Dream[/name]”
[name]Oliver[/name] ‘[name]Ollie[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “As You Like It”
[name]Osric[/name] ‘[name]Oz[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Hamlet[/name]” (my favorite play!)
[name]Othello[/name] ‘[name]Otto[/name]’ - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Othello[/name]”
Pistol - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Merry[/name] Wives of [name]Windsor[/name]” - too violent?
[name]Robin[/name] - double duty: [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “[name]Merry[/name] Wives” and birds
[name]Ross[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Macbeth”
[name]Tamerlane[/name] - a poem by [name]Edgar[/name] A. [name]Poe[/name] about a brave warrior
[name]Theseus[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Midsummer-[name]Night[/name]'s [name]Dream[/name]” - too much like “thesis”?
[name]Toby[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Twelfth [name]Night[/name]” - full name would be [name]Tobias[/name]
[name]Usher[/name] - [name]Poe[/name]'s “The Fall of the House of [name]Usher[/name]” - too ‘rapper’?

GIRLS:
[name]Adriana[/name] - [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s “Comedy of Errors”, obv. not with [name]Adrian[/name]!
[name]Annabel[/name] - [name]Poe[/name]'s “[name]Annabel[/name] [name]Lee[/name]”

I appologise for not finishing giving comments but it is very long! I will endeavor to comment on the others very soon. Some bird names you might like:

Boys:
[name]Dasan[/name] - Rhymes with [name]Jason[/name], it’s Native American and means ‘[name]Son[/name] of bird clan leader’
[name]Efron[/name] - If you can get past [name]Zac[/name], it’s Hebrew and means ‘[name]Lark[/name]’
[name]Halcyon[/name] - Not sure of the pronunciation but it’s Greek and means ‘Kingfisher’
[name]Manu[/name] - (Also has another meaning in Sanskrit) is Polynesian and means ‘[name]Bird[/name] of the night’
[name]Zamir[/name] - (Zam-ear) is Hebrew and means ‘Song bird’

I love [name]Edgar[/name] [name]Allan[/name] [name]Poe[/name]! (: Such wonderful macabre work. I really would love to read some of [name]Shakespeare[/name]”s works ” perhaps you could help me there? (; By the way, I don”t think I saw [name]Roderick[/name] or [name]Madeline[/name]? I”d say that [name]Madeline[/name]”s not as nice as, say, [name]Madeleine[/name], but I”m actually starting to favor [name]Roderick[/name] some.

BOYS:
[name]Adrian[/name] ” Actually, I”m not too fond of [name]Adrian[/name]. I don”t think it”s awful, though; definitely useable.
[name]Allan[/name] ” I personally find [name]Allan[/name] nice. (: I can”t say that it”s lovely; but I think I like it more than [name]Adrian[/name]. [name]Allen[/name] is also a spelling, though to honor [name]Poe[/name] I”d obviously stick with [name]Allan[/name]!
[name]Arthur[/name] ” I”ve never read that one; I didn”t get a chance, sadly. Anyhow, I [name]ADORE[/name] [name]Arthur[/name]! So handsome to me. Me and my sister are a fan of Arthurian [name]Legend[/name], thus [name]Arthur[/name].
[name]Auguste[/name] ” I”m really starting to like [name]Auguste[/name]. I recently read ”The Purloined Letter” and ”The Murders in the [name]Rue[/name] Morgue”. I do find the pronunciation a bit awkward; perhaps that”s just me?
[name]Balthazar[/name] ” I adore [name]Balthazar[/name]. It”s a wonderful name.
[name]Bardolph[/name] ” I can”t say I like it too much.
[name]Bertram[/name] ” I really do find [name]Bertram[/name] nice! I believe it means ”raven”, too?
[name]Caliban[/name] ‘[name]Cal[/name]’ ” I”ve only ever heard of [name]Caliban[/name]. I”m not sure as far as associations go; but I find it kind of attractive. The image that comes to mind, though? Not very pretty.
[name]Corin[/name] (CORE-in) ‘[name]Cori[/name]’ ” I don”t like it too much. The ”core” part seems a bit off to me.
[name]Cornelius[/name] ” [name]Adore[/name] [name]Cornelius[/name]; wonderful, wonderful name.
[name]Demetrius[/name] ” [name]Demetrius[/name] is so nice as well!
Donalbain ” The ”bain” keeps looking like ”brain” to me.
[name]Edgar[/name] ” I love the name [name]Edgar[/name]. It seems so dark and handsome to me.
[name]Edmond[/name] ” Definitely would be a good pick, then.
[name]Frederick[/name] ‘Reds’ ” I love [name]Frederick[/name]. (: ”Reds” seems cute to me.
[name]Ferdinand[/name] ‘[name]Andy[/name]’ ” I don”t know that I like this one as much.
[name]Iago[/name] ” I”m not a big fan of [name]Iago[/name], but I probably could warm up to it.
[name]Launce[/name] ” I sort of do like [name]Launce[/name]. (:
[name]Leontes[/name] ‘[name]Leon[/name]’ ” Loving this one. I adore [name]Leon[/name], so that”s also logical!
[name]Lysander[/name] ‘[name]Andy[/name]/[name]Ander[/name]’ ” I do like [name]Lysander[/name]. I don”t think I like the nicknames [name]Andy[/name] or [name]Ander[/name], though.
[name]Oberon[/name] ‘[name]Bear[/name]’ ” Personally, I find that darling. Especially with the nickname [name]Bear[/name]!
[name]Oliver[/name] ‘[name]Ollie[/name]’ ” I think [name]Oliver[/name]”s okay. It”s not as unusual as I”d like, but I think it”s rather cute. :3
[name]Osric[/name] ‘[name]Oz[/name]’ ” I like [name]Osric[/name], I think. The spelling is a bit strange looking ” not that I would ever change it ” but I”m really liking it. [name]Oz[/name] is wickedly cute, because of The [name]Wizard[/name] of [name]Oz[/name].
[name]Othello[/name] ‘[name]Otto[/name]’ ” I like [name]Othello[/name] ”[name]Otto[/name]”, but the connection with the character isn”t great. It all depends on if you mind, though.
Pistol ” I don”t know about the whole violent thing; I just don”t really like it in the first place. It just seems a little exaggerated to me? [name]Don[/name]”t know.
[name]Robin[/name] ” [name]Robin[/name] is okay, but I can”t say I like it too much.
[name]Ross[/name] ” I like [name]Ross[/name], and it”s a family name! (:
[name]Tamerlane[/name] ” Right when I first saw it, I liked it. But there”s something”I can”t recall what it is. It reminds me of something.
[name]Theseus[/name] ” It might be a little too close to thesis, but it”s not like it”s anything negative really. I actually find it kind of attractive.
[name]Toby[/name] ” Kind of cute!
[name]Usher[/name] ” I do think rapper; and of course E.A. [name]Poe[/name]. But I actually think the rapper”s a little more obvious.

GIRLS:
[name]Adriana[/name] ” I”d probably say the same about [name]Adriana[/name] as I did about [name]Adrian[/name]; but I like this a bit more.
[name]Annabel[/name] ” I adore [name]Annabel[/name]!
[name]Celia[/name] ” Pretty, but I think I like [name]Cecily[/name] more?
[name]Ceres[/name] ” Nice. (:
[name]Cordelia[/name] ”Very pretty.
[name]Cymbeline[/name] ” Beautiful!
Elonora ” I like Elonora.
[name]Eulalie[/name] ” Gorgeous.
Florizel ” Like it.
[name]Francisca[/name] ” Pretty; I like how similar to [name]Francesca[/name] that the spelling is.
Hecate ” [name]Adore[/name] it; so gothic and beautiful. I [name]DO[/name] have issues with reading it and then saying it, though!
[name]Hermia[/name] ” I think it”s pretty. It reminds me of [name]Hermes[/name], though.
[name]Hero[/name] ” I disliked [name]Hero[/name] at first and then it grew on me really quickly, too!
[name]Imogen[/name] ” Beautiful.
[name]Iris[/name] ” [name]Iris[/name] is lovely.
[name]Julia[/name] ” I”ve never been too fond of [name]Julia[/name]/[name]Juliana[/name]/[name]Julie[/name]/etc.
[name]Juno[/name] ” [name]Juno[/name]”s okay. It has recent teen-pregnancy connections, though, I think.
[name]Katharina[/name] ” Gorgeous; it”s so lovely.
[name]Lenore[/name] ” I love [name]Lenore[/name]! It”s so dark and beautiful.
[name]Luce[/name] ” I”m finding it cute.
[name]Luciana[/name] ” Okay; not a favourite.
[name]Nell[/name] ” I like [name]Nell[/name]! ”nail”, though.
[name]Ophelia[/name] ” Beautiful. I love [name]Ophelia[/name]”s tragic beauty.
[name]Perdita[/name] ‘[name]Perdi[/name]’ ” [name]How[/name] cute! (:
[name]Phebe[/name] ” I don”t know; it looks quite feminine to me?
[name]Psyche[/name] ” I”ll admit that this is quite awesome. However, it”ll be a guilty pleasure for me! :3
[name]Raven[/name] ” Very nice.
[name]Rosalie[/name] ” [name]Rosalie[/name] is gorgeous. Of course, there are also Twilight connections.
[name]Rosalind[/name] ” Very, very pretty.
[name]Rosaline[/name] ” Pretty, too. But I always have some awkwardness with the ”line” part of the name.
[name]Tamora[/name] ” Sorry, but I”m not too fond of it.
[name]Titania[/name] ” Beautiful! (:
Ulalume ” I”m glad you taught me how to say it! (: Very pretty, now that I know how to say it. [name]Love[/name] the ”lume” part.
[name]Ursula[/name] ” Gorgeous. [name]Ursula[/name]”s always been a favourite of mine!
[name]Valentine[/name] ” Kind of attractive.
[name]Viola[/name] ” [name]Viola[/name]”s pretty.
[name]Virginia[/name] ” Beautiful! (: Poor [name]Virginia[/name] [name]Clem/name.
[name]Windsor[/name] ” I”m kind of liking it. Seems a bit masculine to me, but otherwise, it”s nice.

I like:
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Auguste[/name]
[name]Balthazar[/name]
[name]Bertram[/name]
[name]Edmond[/name]
[name]Leontes[/name]
[name]Lysander[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Robin[/name]
[name]Ross[/name]

[name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Celia[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name]
[name]Hero[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Lenore[/name]
[name]Luce[/name]
[name]Luciana[/name]
[name]Nell[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Rosaline[/name]
[name]Viola[/name]
My top three out of the names:
[name]Edmond[/name], [name]Robin[/name], [name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name], [name]Lenore[/name]

Which ones do you like, love, dislike, hate, or think are too ‘out there’ to use as names for a baby born in, we’ll say 2013-2014? Last name is [name]HOGAN[/name]. I don’t like the name [name]Juliet[/name].
BOYS:
[name]Adrian[/name] - Objectively, it’s a nice name. But somehow, it’s always sounded a little prissy to me.
[name]Allan[/name] - My grandfather’s mn too. It’s nice, steady. Lacking in oomph though.
[name]Arthur[/name] - [name]Love[/name].
[name]Auguste[/name] - [name]Auguste[/name] sounds too, well, august to me. Like a ruler-to-be.
[name]Balthazar[/name] - I can’t see this on a real person. Not in English, anyway.
[name]Bardolph[/name] - [name]Rudolph[/name].
[name]Bertram[/name] - I do like [name]Bertram[/name]. But he might get teased depending on where you live.
[name]Caliban[/name] ‘[name]Cal[/name]’ - Ooo! Nice sound!
[name]Corin[/name] (CORE-in) ‘[name]Cori[/name]’ - Sounds more like a girl’s name.
[name]Cornelius[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it!
[name]Demetrius[/name] - It’s OK.
Donalbain - A bit too much for me.
[name]Edgar[/name] - This one has never occurred to me, but I really like it. Short and strong a la [name]Hugo[/name].
[name]Edmond[/name] - [name]Love[/name].
[name]Frederick[/name] ‘Reds’ - I do dig [name]Frederick[/name] and I like the nn twist!
[name]Ferdinand[/name] ‘[name]Andy[/name]’ - [name]Ferdinand[/name] not so much but I love the genial [name]Andy[/name].
[name]Iago[/name] - I really, really wish [name]Iago[/name] wasn’t such a famous villain because this is a great name.
[name]Launce[/name] - Like a chopped off [name]Lancelot[/name].
[name]Leontes[/name] ‘[name]Leon[/name]’ - I like it, but potentially a little effeminate.
[name]Lysander[/name] ‘[name]Andy[/name]/[name]Ander[/name]’ - This would be a cool name. And its similarity to [name]Alexander[/name] would stave off a lot of funny looks.
[name]Oberon[/name] ‘[name]Bear[/name]’ - Like [name]Hermione[/name]'s parents in [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] it would sound like you were trying too hard.
[name]Oliver[/name] ‘[name]Ollie[/name]’ - [name]How[/name] can anyone not love an [name]Oliver[/name]???
[name]Osric[/name] ‘[name]Oz[/name]’ - NICE.
[name]Othello[/name] ‘[name]Otto[/name]’ - [name]Otto[/name] is great. Not sure about the tragic associations of [name]Othello[/name].
Pistol - Yes, too violent.
[name]Robin[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Robin[/name] for boys! I think I just watched [name]Robin[/name] Hood to many times as a child. Nonetheless, that debonair image has stuck.
[name]Ross[/name] - I think Friends will always be my first association. And I wouldn’t want to date [name]Ross[/name].
[name]Tamerlane[/name] - His friends wouldn’t get it. And [name]Lane[/name] sounds like a girl. But it would be a striking middle.
[name]Theseus[/name] - Too much like Thesis. Another middle option.
[name]Toby[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Toby[/name]!!
[name]Usher[/name] - NO.

GIRLS:
[name]Adriana[/name] - Too “cheerleader” for me.
[name]Annabel[/name] - Beautiful name.
[name]Celia[/name] - Pretty. Not my favorite.
[name]Ceres[/name] - Series issue.
[name]Cordelia[/name] - [name]Lovely[/name].
[name]Cymbeline[/name] - Wasn’t [name]Cymbeline[/name] a boy? Anywho, lovely, but being a “Cymbal” might be too much for everyday wear.
Elonora - Beautiful, but bound to be misspelled.
[name]Eulalie[/name] - I heart [name]Eulalie[/name]!
Florizel - I’m on the fence on this one.
[name]Francisca[/name] - All I can think of is San [name]Francisco[/name] since I went to school in that area.
Hecate - Hectare.
[name]Hermia[/name] - “[name]Herm[/name]” isn’t an attractive sound to me.
[name]Hero[/name] - I love [name]Hero[/name]! But I don’t think the world is ready. People are culturally uneducated nowadays and they’d just assume you were crazy. Not to mention, it’s a lot to live up to.
[name]Imogen[/name] - [name]Love[/name] [name]Imogen[/name]!
[name]Iris[/name] - [name]Love[/name]!
[name]Julia[/name] - It’s a great name, but not my cup of tea. And a little too ordinary for me.
[name]Juno[/name] - I wouldn’t want the movie association.
[name]Katharina[/name] - [name]Lovely[/name]. This would open the door for [name]Kit[/name] or [name]Kitty[/name]!
[name]Lenore[/name] - [name]Lovely[/name].
[name]Luce[/name] - Boy or girl, few would spell it right.
[name]Luciana[/name] - [name]Luciana[/name] is beautiful.
[name]Nell[/name] - [name]Nell[/name] is sweet but I like it more as a nn for [name]Eleanor[/name], et. al.
[name]Ophelia[/name] - Great name! I wouldn’t care about the jokes.
[name]Perdita[/name] ‘[name]Perdi[/name]’ - Perdition.
[name]Phebe[/name] - Spelling issues. But [name]Phoebe[/name] is great.
[name]Psyche[/name] - No, too many crazy associations.
[name]Raven[/name] - For me, Ravens are kind of scary. But there is that actress [name]Raven[/name] [name]Simone[/name].
[name]Rosalie[/name] - My favorite of the [name]Rose[/name] names too!
[name]Rosalind[/name] - Pretty.
[name]Rosaline[/name] - Pretty.
[name]Tamora[/name] - I can see this getting mixed up with [name]Tamara[/name].
[name]Titania[/name] - It’s that first syllable that makes this name unwearable… darn shame.
Ulalume - I love saying this but I just can’t see “loom” in a real person’s name.
[name]Ursula[/name] - The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid for me.
[name]Valentine[/name] - Too cheesy.
[name]Viola[/name] - I do like this. And with [name]Violet[/name] becoming popular I can see a [name]Viola[/name] fitting-in/standing-out.
[name]Virginia[/name] - Classic.
[name]Windsor[/name] - Castle.

Usuable that I like.
BOYS:
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Balthazar[/name]
[name]Demetrius[/name]
[name]Ferdinand[/name]
[name]Iago[/name]
[name]Othello[/name] ‘[name]Otto[/name]’
[name]Theseus[/name] -
[name]Toby[/name] -

GIRLS:
[name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Celia[/name]
[name]Ceres[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Nell[/name]
[name]Phebe[/name] (this is female I think also [name]Hebe[/name])
[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Rosaline[/name]
[name]Titania[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name]

[name]Zipporah[/name]
Huia,Tui (NZ birds)

I adore names which have a connection to literature; one of my mns is [name]Alice[/name], and I’ve always loved having that association!

[name]Bird[/name] names :
Aderyn - means bird in Welsh, but looks very tryndee :frowning:
[name]Alondra[/name] - Spanish word for lark
[name]Alouette[/name] - French word for lark
[name]Enna[/name] - (AY-na); this is an Irish boys’ name meaning bird-like
[name]Zipporah[/name] - means bird in Hebrew

Boys :
Dislike (mainly just because I find them too ordinary) :
[name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Allan[/name]
[name]Bardolph[/name] - I don”t like the sound of this one, personally
[name]Caliban[/name] - I like the name, but it strikes up images of the insane, part-human creature, and his father was a devil
[name]Cornelius[/name] - I just see corny, corns, corn ”
Donalbain - a really interesting choice, but I”ve never liked how he just ran away to [name]Ireland[/name]
[name]Launce[/name]
Pistol - likely to get grouped with all of the now trendy violent names, like [name]Rebel[/name], [name]Gunner[/name] and [name]Blade[/name]
[name]Robin[/name] - I find it a little dated
[name]Usher[/name] - I think weddings and rappers.

A problem name :
[name]Auguste[/name] - the E makes it look feminine, I think. [name]August[/name] is a good alternative.

I hate to admit it, but these may be too much in first place :
[name]Balthazar[/name]
[name]Bertram[/name]
[name]Demetrius[/name]
[name]Tamerlane[/name]
[name]Theseus[/name]

I like :
[name]Corin[/name] - I love the whole name, but am not very fond of [name]Cori[/name]
[name]Edgar[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] nn Reds
[name]Ferdinand[/name] nn [name]Andy[/name] - I can”t get that [name]Abba[/name] song out of my head, but I think that”s just me : )
[name]Ross[/name]
[name]Tobias[/name] nn [name]Toby[/name]

I love :
[name]Arthur[/name] - this is on our list
[name]Edmond[/name] - my brother and one of my son”s mns
[name]Iago[/name]
[name]Leontes[/name] nn [name]Leon[/name] - although personally I prefer the nn [name]Leo[/name]
[name]Lysander[/name] nn [name]Andy[/name]/[name]Ander[/name] - I think this is made do-able by the accessible nn
[name]Oberon[/name] nn [name]Bear[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name] nn [name]Ollie[/name]
[name]Osric[/name] nn [name]Oz[/name]
[name]Othello[/name] nn [name]Otto[/name] - made do-able by the nn [name]Otto[/name].

Girls :
Dislike :
[name]Hermia[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name] - I feel almost obliged to like this, as I am English and I have heard so many people say it is the ultimate English name, but I just don”t like its sound
[name]Psyche[/name] - very New Age
[name]Raven[/name] - a little gothic
[name]Titania[/name] - a titanic [see what I did there? : )] amount of breast-related jokes
[name]Ursula[/name] - the octopus-woman from The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid has completely commandeered this, in my mind
[name]Windsor[/name] - a place. A castle. Not a name. (Perhaps this feeling is so strong for me because I am English, though.)

Problem names (I do like these, though, and think they would make wonderful mns) :
[name]Annabel[/name] - very popular, unfortunately
[name]Ceres[/name] - will forever be pronounced S when it should be K
Elonora - will forever be misspelt as [name]Eleanora[/name]. I love this, though (and [name]Leonora[/name] is an anagram of it)
Florizel - he was a man. I love [name]Flora[/name], though!
[name]Francisca[/name] - will get pronounced like [name]Francesca[/name], when it should be fran-SEES-ka. Although, if you are in [name]America[/name], perhaps not; I think I am right in saying there is a large Hispanic population there, and so people may be used to the pronunciation
Hecate - because she was a hag in Macbeth. In Greek mythology, however, she was an infinitely brilliant goddess
[name]Hero[/name] - looks masculine. I imagine parents may well be using this for their little boys ”
[name]Luce[/name] - puce. A great nn for [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Luciana[/name], [name]Lucille[/name] et cetera, though
[name]Ophelia[/name] - apparently, ”feel ya ” jokes abound. I love, love, love this one, though!
[name]Phebe[/name] - no, she was a shepherdess. I love this one, but it will always get misspelled as [name]Phoebe[/name] (which is just as good an option, in my opinion)
[name]Rosalie[/name] - set to become very popular, due to a combination of the Twilight phenomenon and the trend for names ending in -lee
[name]Tamora[/name] - shall be misread as [name]Tamara[/name]
Ulalume - I think most people will have problems saying this one, unfortunately
[name]Virginia[/name] - I wish it was back for a revival, but the jokes are too many and too obvious.

I like :
[name]Adriana[/name]
[name]Iris[/name] - I can never help but think of the eye part, personally
[name]Julia[/name] - pretty, and I do like it, but it doesn”t bowl me over
[name]Juno[/name] - movie association, although that will probably not be a problem three or four years from now
[name]Katharina[/name]
[name]Perdita[/name] - I love the sound of this one, but as I lived in [name]France[/name] for part of my childhood, the lost meaning is too obvious for me (perdre - to lose)
[name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Viola[/name]

I love :
[name]Celia[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Cymbeline[/name] - I hate to admit it, but this may be too much. It would be an absolutely brilliant mn, though.
[name]Eulalie[/name]
[name]Lenore[/name]
[name]Luciana[/name]
[name]Nell[/name] - this makes a lovely, vintage nn for [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Helena[/name] and [name]Helen[/name]
[name]Rosaline[/name]
[name]Valentine[/name].

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for all the thoughts and suggestions! I loved reading what everyone had to say… it’s really helped narrow the list for me.

I also gave it to my SO and he is still looking it over.

After reading the comments and everyone’s opinions, I have to say my standout for girls is definitely [name]HERO[/name]! I never [name]EVER[/name] thought I would love this name, but the more I think about it, the more I love it. It’s replaced [name]Olympia[/name] for my top name of the moment.

I know piikii named her daughter [name]Hero[/name] and has had both good and bad reactions to it, but I think that will happen with any unusual name (and all of mine are!)…

For a boy, I still love [name]Bertram[/name] (probably due to my soft spot for [name]Bernard[/name]) but am having trouble thinking of nicknames. I hate the NN [name]Bert[/name]. I’ve tried [name]Bear[/name], Tram, and [name]Ram[/name], but [name]Ram[/name] sounds like I’m trying too hard and Tram is too close to Tramp for me. This will probably become a MN.

Anyway, thank you everyone! I will keep refining the list and be back soon for more thoughts

The ones I like:
BOYS:
[name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Auguste[/name] (nickname gus)
[name]Corin[/name]
[name]Edmond[/name]
[name]Leon[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Tobias[/name]

GIRLS:
[name]Celia[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Nell[/name]
[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name]
[name]Windsor[/name]

You have a lot of literary choices. Here are some bird names which I love, too!

Girls

[name]Alouette[/name] - French, lark
[name]Bernadette[/name] nn [name]Birdie[/name]

[name]Calandra[/name] - Greek, lark
[name]Jemima[/name] - Hebrew, dove
[name]Paloma[/name] - Spanish, dove
[name]Penelope[/name] - Greek, duck
[name]Phoebe[/name] - has something to do with a bird, I will look it up. It is a type of bird. You can look it up on Wikipedia to see a picture of a [name]Phoebe[/name] bird.

My favorite names on the girls’ list are [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name].

[name]Aren[/name]'t those names pretty? Now for the boys:

[name]Arnold[/name] - English from [name]German[/name], eagle
[name]Byrd[/name] - I’d love it in the middle.
[name]Callum[/name] - Scottish, dove
[name]Corbin[/name] - Latin, raven
[name]Drake[/name] - English, male duck
[name]Gavin[/name] - Celtic, little hawk - this meaning is so cute!
[name]Jonah[/name] - Hebrew, dove
[name]Peregrine[/name] - Latin, pilgrim, traveler, makes me think of a peregrine falcon.

I love [name]Corbin[/name]! Ravens are so cool. But if you name your son a literary name, then his middle name could be [name]Peregrine[/name]. So cool!

[name]Usher[/name] is actually an R&B singer.

[name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Helena[/name] are also [name]Shakespeare[/name] names.
