Looking for a boy's name related to "Otter"

I’m looking for ideas for a boy’s name (either first or middle) that has some relation / derivation from the name Otter. Otters have personal significance to me and I’ve taken to calling my in utero babe ‘my little otter’ because he’s so active – I picture him swimming around inside of me like a cute little otter

I did a search for the word otter in other languages / scientific names and have the list below – do any of these inspire any real or made-up baby names to anyone?

[name_u]Odell[/name_u] (Old [name_m]German[/name_m], Greek, Danish)
[name_m]Odie[/name_m] (various origins)
Otor (old english)
[name_m]Oren[/name_m], [name_m]Orin[/name_m] (Hebrew)
[name_f]Orna[/name_f], Ornat (Irish - typically female)
[name_m]Oran[/name_m] (Irish)
Loutre (french)
Otr (old icelandic)
Utraz or Otraz
Utter (Swedish)
Saukko (Finnish)
Lontra (genus)
Lutra (genus)
Amblonyx (genus)
Aonyx (genus)
Enhydra (genus)
Lutrogale (genus)
Pteronura (genus)
Lutrinae (subfamily)
Sette (surname that means otter)

[name_m]Orin[/name_m] / [name_m]Oren[/name_m] / [name_m]Oran[/name_m] seems like the most normal-sounding name but our last name ends with “-an” and I’m not sure I like the repeated “n” sound.

Some ideas I’ve had:
Lutris
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u], with Otter as a nickname
[name_m]Otto[/name_m], with Otter as nickname
[name_m]Odis[/name_m]

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I think [name_m]Otto[/name_m] is your best bet - the name always reminds me of otters.

When I think of otters I always think of [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m]'s [name_m]Ring[/name_m] of [name_u]Bright[/name_u] Water and other books. I don’t know if you’re familiar with that, but if you are then [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] or [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] could be a nice link/tribute to otters. Also Tarka the Otter but Tarka is maybe a bit much (I always wanted to name a dog Tarka, though)!

I’m personally not a fan of any of the scientific names, I think it’s a bit too literal for a baby boy. I think [name_m]Otto[/name_m], & [name_m]Odis[/name_m] are my favorite, although [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is adorable too and the otter NN would totally fit. Perhaps you could go with something like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_m]Odis[/name_m], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_u]Odell[/name_u], or [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_m]Orin[/name_m] (my personal fave). That way you could have the best of both worlds! They’re all cute but strong name imo. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helped

[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] with the nn Otter is totally adorable; I love it! Like someone else said though, [name_m]Otto[/name_m] is a great way to get to Otter I’m not a fan of the other ones though, I’ve never like [name_m]Orin[/name_m] and [name_m]Odie[/name_m] just reminds me of the dog from [name_m]Garfield[/name_m]!

Potential curve ball but you don’t need a name related to otters to use Otter as a pet name.
My son is called [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] but he looked just like an otter pup when he was born and he answers to Otter/Otter Pup/Otter Puppy at home. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a thought that personal significance doesn’t have to be reflected in the literal name you give, it can be a pet name unrelated to the birth certificate / official name.

You could also consider choosing names related to traits you like about otters. If you like that they are swimmers and in the water pick a name that is related to that. Or that they are playful. Have you ever heard of the Redwall series by [name_m]Brian[/name_m] [name_m]Jacques[/name_m]? A lot of the characters in those books are otters. You could look those up and choose on of those names. Good luck.

Hey, great idea! (Though the Redwall suggestion probably works wayyyyy better if you’re actually familiar with the series! [name_m]Skipper[/name_m] would be cool though. )
