Been researching baby names for years and now that I’m pregnant, I need help! Our favourite boy names happen to be popular ones, where as we’ve already agreed on [name]Leona[/name] for a girl. I want help thinking of a name that can be used if we have a boy this time or next.

Husband and I went through a book and he picked these: [name]Adrian[/name], [name]Aiden[/name], Anakin, [name]Artemis[/name], [name]Edric[/name], [name]Elias[/name], [name]Ethan[/name], [name]Evan[/name], [name]Kano[/name], [name]Marcus[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], Silvanis, [name]Wesley[/name], [name]Issac[/name], [name]Bran[/name], [name]Cameron[/name], [name]Kieran[/name], [name]Dorian[/name], [name]Dylan[/name], [name]Forrest[/name], [name]Gareth[/name], [name]Liam[/name], [name]Riley[/name], [name]Ryan[/name], [name]Vincent[/name], [name]Xavier[/name]

The only ones I would actually pick also happen to be the more popular ones ([name]Evan[/name], [name]Marcus[/name], [name]Adrian[/name], [name]Liam[/name], [name]Ryan[/name]). So, just thought I would reach out and get some suggestions for solid names we may not have seen yet.

1-3 syllables maximum as our last name is a 5-syllable Spanish name. We like animal and nature-y names, something with a good meaning and can be from international origins. I like Hawaiian names, husband likes Irish and Swedish, so mostly anything goes. We like A, E, K, L, M, and R names.

And, btw we live in New Zealand so different trends here. Still curious to see what advice you have for me!

[name]Leona[/name] is one of my favorite names. [name]Lovely[/name] choice! I don’t know how popular it is in New Zealand but it’s fairly unusual in the U.S. so I think that should be taken into mind when picking a sibling’s name.

My favorites from your choices are [name]Adrian[/name] (although some may find it too feminine), [name]Ethan[/name] (although it is very popular), [name]Bran[/name] (can’t find a fault except the fact that it is one syllable and a bit nickname-y), [name]Keiran[/name] (maybe seen as too feminine again), and [name]Forrest[/name] (pairs wonderfully with [name]Leona[/name]).

Wow, that’s an interesting challenge! I will say that with such a long last name (5 syllables) I would limit the first name to 2 syllables at the most. Your husband has daring taste, too, and I really liked many of his suggestions. You’d like animal and nature names with a good meaning, and the letters you mentioned above.

Of your list, I think the contenders are [name]Adrian[/name], [name]Elias[/name], [name]Ethan[/name], [name]Evan[/name], [name]Kano[/name] (though am worried about this one-- in NZ do people put an -O on the end of boys’ names like they do in Australia to turn them into nicknames?), [name]Marcus[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Wesley[/name] (though not a desired letter), [name]Isaac[/name], [name]Kieran[/name], [name]Dorian[/name], [name]Dylan[/name], [name]Forrest[/name], [name]Liam[/name] (though it’s quite popular), [name]Ryan[/name], [name]Vincent[/name] (though not a preferred letter), and [name]Xavier[/name] (again, not a preferred letter). It’s a pretty stand-out list.

[name]Aiden[/name] is far, far, far too popular. Anakin = a [name]Star[/name] Wars villain. [name]Artemis[/name] = an exclusively female name, [name]Artemis[/name] Fowl notwithstanding.
[name]Edric[/name] has a thick sound-- would you be interested in [name]Alaric[/name] or [name]Osric[/name]? Silvanis = would change to the more modern and trim [name]Sylvan[/name], or Sylvius. [name]Bran[/name] = cereal. [name]Cameron[/name] = a great name, but too long. [name]Gareth[/name] = sounds like a lisp. I know it’s a well-accepted name, but it sounds like “[name]Garrett[/name]” with someone stuck in one’s teeth. [name]Riley[/name] = too popular by a mile, and more frequently given to girls.
