Looking for medieval clunky germanic names

[name]Hi[/name] Berries!

I’m looking for medieval clunky, preferably germanic in origin, names. Favorites so far are: Hadewych, Roslindis/Roslinde, Mariken, Elsabijn, Dietlinde, [name]Mathilde[/name], Roswitha, Sieglinde and Wendelin. Could you help me find more of these?

Thanks!

Swanahilda - but too Swanlike, however it is kind of a family name: my grandmothers name was Swaantina

I love
[name]Adelais[/name] - how is it pronounced? [name]Add[/name]-uh-lays? I would pronounce it [name]Ah[/name]-duh-lah-ees…

I’m glad you liked it! I’ve never really posted about medieval names. [name]Adelais[/name] is really pretty, isn’t it? I think you could pronounce it a few ways: [name]AD[/name]-eh-lay, [name]AD[/name]-eh-lace (my favorite way to say it) or ad-eh-[name]LAY[/name]-iss.

Some of these are not that clunky, but they are pretty, and Germanic

@lexie Thank you for your suggestions! I like [name]Matilda[/name], but prefer [name]Mathilde[/name]. [name]Rosalia[/name] is also pretty, but not as germanic/clunky as i’m looking for. Fredegund sounds pretty in [name]German[/name], and i love the Fre-beginning, but in Dutch the g is quite harsh and I’m not fond of that sound in a name (with Hadewych/Hadewig being the exception). Same goes for Radegund and [name]Gertrude[/name]/Geertruida.

@yma Thanks for the compliment and the names:
I like Bathilde, Edelinde, Elswitha (isn’t this a smush-name?), Farahilde, Godelinde (however, i would probably never use a name with God in it, since i’m not religious), Trudeliese is really cute

@ottilie, what a list! I like Claramond but like [name]Rosamond[/name] the last part of the name is also the dutch word for mouth and feels a bit awkward. Elysande sounds pretty, can you tell me something about it’s origin? [name]Estrid[/name] or [name]Astrid[/name] is a name i quite like, but is a bit dated here.
I love [name]Heloise[/name]! And Rohesia is also pretty, even though it makes me think of Rhodesia  Somerild/Somerilde i like, is this related to the scandinavian name Somarliðr? Thanks for the inspiration you gave me with this list!

About Elysande: Alahsind is the original spelling; it consists of the two Germanic words [name]Alah[/name] (hall, temple) and sinþ/sind (travel/journey/way/path). [name]James[/name] II of [name]Aragon[/name]'s last wife was called Elisenda (which I am assuming is the Catalan version of the name as she was from Catalonia). Other variations include Alicsen, Elicsenda, Elisende, [name]Elis[/name]èn, Elisind, Elysant, Helisende and [name]Helisent[/name].

Somerild/Somerilde/Somerilda: They come from the old Norse name Sumarhild (summer + battle). The word liðr in Somarliðr means “to pass”. So not the same, but, of course, both have summer in them.

[name]Hildegard[/name], [name]Hedwig[/name] and [name]Magda[/name] come to mind.

Thank you [name]Ottilie[/name] for the additional info!

Bigsweater: Thanks for your reply  I do like [name]Hedwig[/name], but love Hadewych better, since it is a family name.

More input is still welcome!

Aww, glad you think so!
I believe Trudeliese was the only smush-name I suggested; to my (limited) knowledge, Elswitha/Elswyth/Alswitha/etc. comes from the Old English (Anglo-[name]Saxon[/name]) name Ealhswith, a compound of O.E. [i]ealh[/i] “temple” (also found in Elysand/[name]Helisent[/name], I see!) + [i]swith[/i] “strong”.
I know what you mean about God- names ([name]Godiva[/name], [name]Godfrey[/name], Godric…), but have yet to write them off completely myself – in part because they’re so ancient that the “God” syllable represents a lost pre-[name]Christian[/name] (i.e. pagan) concept, which appeals to this subversive geek girl, anyway
(Another thing! It is really too bad about the -mond names (sadly, eliminates Florimonde, Esclarmonde), but what about -mund?)

[name]Hi[/name] yma,

Yes, in the mean time i did some internet searching on Elswitha and realized that is wasn’t a smush name  Thank you for the extra information.

About the God-names: I feel the same, and have not wrote them off completely, but some people who know me might find it odd for me to choose such a name. However, the name [name]Elisabeth[/name] is as, if not more religious, and I don’t feel the same hesitation…

Thank you

Zerelda

I like [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f]! It’s not too clunky or complex that it’s hard to read and understand, but it still has that old vibe!
