Looking for names to do with the universe

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries, ever since studying astronomy I have always wanted to name my future child something to do with the beauty and mystery of the universe. The thing is, I haven’t really found many options. So below I have the names I have found and would love for some fresh suggestions.

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]- Means universe, I like it, but I’m on the fence as I’m afraid some people will find the french feel too pretentious
[name_f]Celestia[/name_f]- This is by far the only celeste/celene name I like. But again, people may find it too pretentious.
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]- I love this, it’s the goddess of the moon, but is it wearable?
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]- too popular
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Estella[/name_f]- [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like [name_f]Ella[/name_f] as nickname.
Denebola- star name, but ebola?
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]- people won’t get the star connection.
Lorina- something feels off
[name_u]Tora[/name_u] -It’s also my mother’s name, and the jewish torah.

And for boys the only one I like is [name_m]Leonis[/name_m], Which I actually consider using very seriously. So please give me new suggestions, and opinions on my names.:stuck_out_tongue:

I love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] and think it’s definitely usable.

Other suggestions:
[name_f]Io[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u]
[name_u]Calypso[/name_u]

[name_m]Sirius[/name_m]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]
[name_m]Indus[/name_m]
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]

A personal favorite is Astrophel, invented by a poet in the 1500’s for a male character. It means star lover.

I hope you find something in there that you like.

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] and [name_f]Celestia[/name_f] are my favorites (So magical!). I also love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f]! I definitely think [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is usable.

I second [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]! They’re two of my favorite names, but just too common for me as a first names :(, but if you don’t care about that they would be wonderful choices!

What about:

[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
Tinuviel “daughter of the starry twilight”
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]/[name_f]Vespera[/name_f]/Vespertine
Belphoebe
[name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]

Has anyone suggested [name_f]Sidra[/name_f] yet? There are conflicting origins/meanings, but NB lists the meaning as “like a star.” I also second [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]; it feels very galactic.

Also, this is totally nitpicky, but [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] is an Italian name, not a [name_m]French[/name_m] one. It’s also my favorite from your list, though I also love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f].

I’m a fan of astronomy and I find connections where most other people simply don’t (for example [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Callisto[/name_f], [name_f]Elara[/name_f], etc are all moons/satellites). Now, do you need something really really obvious so people will always get the starry/spacey connection? Your list is lovely, the only one I consider unusable is Denebola.

[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f] - like the queen
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] - the harp
[name_f]Aquila[/name_f] - the eagle constellation
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] - the princess
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - a quite famous star belong to [name_u]Orion[/name_u], but don’t use this if the evil [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character connection bothers you.
[name_f]Leona[/name_f] - feminization of [name_m]Leo[/name_m], maybe? But only if you don’t have a [name_m]Leonis[/name_m] first.
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_u]Vega[/name_u] - [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]'s brightest star and one of the brightest of all.
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f] - meaning heavenly
[name_f]Hera[/name_f]/[name_f]Juno[/name_f] - queen of heaven

the less obvious ones:
[name_u]Seren[/name_u] - meaning star
Giena - Cygnus’ star
Sarin - [name_m]Hercules[/name_m]’ star
[name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] - Crux’s star
[name_f]Maia[/name_f] - one of the pleiades
[name_f]Electra[/name_f] - one of the pleiades
[name_f]Carina[/name_f] - it’s a constellation, but most people won’t even notice

Wow, so many replies! Thank you everyone! Some I like, but the astronomy connection has to be strong, as well as not have any negative connotations.

@ameliawilliams I’m so glad you find [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] wearable, and from your list I really like [name_m]Sirius[/name_m].

@frankie - I like [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], [name_m]Argo[/name_m], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], but [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is sooo popular now.

@whirligig -So many names! Wow, I’ll have to re-read them, but from my first glance I really like [name_f]Perdita[/name_f], [name_f]Rhea[/name_f], Lupus, and Stephano. But I’m not sure if they all have strong astronomical connections. And is stephano too pretentious?

@kterina93 - [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like my list, I’m so so for [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], because of the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] reference.

@geeknamezyo - I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Sidra[/name_f]! And yes, I know [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] is Italian, but it feels very french to me like [name_f]Cosette[/name_f].

c@29 - I would like the connection to be more obvious, but I’m fine as long as it has one astronomy related meaning. I like [name_f]Juno[/name_f] and [name_f]Hera[/name_f], but I like [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] more, and don’t want to embarrass my kids with all goddess names, that’s also my problem with [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. Other than that, I like [name_f]Celia[/name_f], and I think [name_u]Vega[/name_u] is nice.

Evren is the Turkish girl’s name and it means literally universe, it’s also the word they use for universe, and Turkish people like this name very much although it’s a little uncommon.

For cultural reasons I can’t use turkish names. Although Evren is very pretty. @stell2000
