Looking For Names

Hello,
I’ve been looking at all of the name lists and blog posts and advice here on Nameberry for a while, but am new to the forums. We are expecting our fifth and final child in late [name]May[/name]/early [name]June[/name] 2013. Our other children are called [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Marie[/name] [name]Wren[/name] (age 9), [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Everett[/name] [name]Brown[/name] (age 7), and the twins, [name]Oscar[/name] [name]James[/name] and [name]Mason[/name] [name]Jeffrey[/name] (age 3). We have a traditional style and after looking for a few weeks, here are my top names in order, many of which Husband loathes:

Boys
[name]Jack[/name] - I love this and would use it in a heartbeat, but Husband dislikes it
[name]Lincoln[/name] - Simply adore it, but Husband says it’s too president and last-name-y
[name]Jacob[/name] - So we picked [name]Mason[/name], which is #2, and [name]Daniel[/name], which is #10, and [name]Sarah[/name], which is #39 and everyone says it very plain, but for some reason, I don’t think I could actually bring myself to pick the #1 name. Maybe it’s something to do with spending time on Nameberry and realizing just how popular [name]Mason[/name] and [name]Daniel[/name] and [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name] are. Would you use it if you loved it? Husband is sold, I love the actual name but feel uncertain.
[name]Matthew[/name] - one of my top names for a while, but do [name]Matthew[/name] and [name]Mason[/name] feel like we’re trying to match?
[name]Ronan[/name] - Husband and I both like it, but I’m worried about [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Mason[/name] ending in the same sound
[name]Theodore[/name] - nickname [name]Theo[/name], but my issue is that I prefer just [name]Theo[/name], not the full [name]Theodore[/name], but I don’t know if it’s OK to use [name]Theo[/name] as a complete first name
[name]Ian[/name] - we both like this but I’m worried about the similarity to [name]Mason[/name] (Husband doesn’t seem to think this is an issue)
[name]Scott[/name] - Husband suggested it and I think it’s cute, but am worried about [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Scott[/name] and would prefer [name]Jack[/name] for a one-syllable name

Girls
[name]Orla[/name] - my favorite name right now, but Husband says it’s weird and is the repeating R in [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Orla[/name] too much? And [name]Oscar[/name] and [name]Orla[/name]?
[name]Isabelle[/name] - Husband I both think it’s gorgeous but [name]Isabella[/name] is so popular…
[name]Rose[/name] - I love it, Husband says it’s pretentious-sounding
[name]Lucy[/name] - I think it’s super cute but Husband has negative connotations with the name due to a co-worker
[name]Annabeth[/name] - I like it but Husband prefers [name]Elizabeth[/name], saying we can call her [name]Beth[/name], but if she were [name]Annabeth[/name] I’d like to call her [name]Annie[/name]
[name]Isla[/name] - I like the sound but dislike the spelling, and would it have pronunciation issues?
[name]Aurora[/name] - do the endings of [name]Aurora[/name] and [name]Sarah[/name] feel like a bit much? Is it too princessy together?
[name]Mackenzie[/name] - I like it, it’s spunky and goes well with [name]Sarah[/name], but is it really “Trendy”? Plus, [name]Mackenzie[/name] and [name]Mason[/name]?

Thank you for your advice and comments! We’d love some suggestions and feedback on the existing list.

I tend to agree with your husband that [name]Orla[/name] doesn’t really fit. [name]Rose[/name] is one of the least pretentious names in my opinion, so I’m not sure where he gets that! [name]Rose[/name] would work beautifully and is my favorite of your choices. For boys, I think [name]Theo[/name] works the best, and I think it can absolutely stand alone.

Other thoughts:

[name]Anneliese[/name]- slightly longer than the other sibling’s names, but has that nn [name]Annie[/name]

[name]Lila[/name]- Has the charms of [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Isla[/name]

[name]Gavin[/name]- similar length, slightly different ending than [name]Mason[/name]

[name]Adam[/name]- a classic that I think goes with your other children’s names

Although it is #1, I do think that [name]Jacob[/name] works really with your other children’s names. [name]Theo[/name] would be my second choice for a boy. For girls, [name]Lucy[/name] or [name]Rose[/name] would work really well, but it sounds like your DH may not go for them. [name]Orla[/name] is definitely a different sounding name that doesn’t go with the traditional style, so I tend to agree with your husband on that. I think [name]Anne[/name], [name]Annie[/name] or something with the nn [name]Annie[/name] would be nice for a girl (what about [name]Annie[/name] [name]Rose[/name]?) and I like rj’s suggestions of [name]Lila[/name]/[name]Lilah[/name] and [name]Adam[/name] too.

Instead of [name]Jacob[/name]-- what about [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Joel[/name], [name]Josiah[/name], [name]Jeremy[/name], [name]Jonathan[/name], [name]Ethan[/name], or [name]Julian[/name]? Instead of [name]Lucy[/name]-- what about [name]Lily[/name], [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Liza[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Ruth[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name], or [name]Grace[/name]?

Some possible combos of my favorites for you:

[name]Joseph[/name] [name]Ian[/name]
[name]Joel[/name] [name]Matthew[/name]
[name]Jeremy[/name] [name]Ronan[/name]
[name]Jane[/name] [name]Isabelle[/name]
[name]Jane[/name] [name]Annabeth[/name] [name]Lark[/name]
[name]Jane[/name] [name]Orla[/name] [name]May[/name]
[name]Grace[/name] [name]Isabelle[/name]
[name]Grace[/name] [name]Isla[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Aurora[/name]

Other possibilities:

[name]Sarah[/name], [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Mason[/name], and

[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Bethany[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Emily[/name]
[name]Felice[/name]
[name]Gemma[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Teresa[/name] (nn [name]Tess[/name]/[name]Tessa[/name])
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name]

[name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Andrew[/name]
[name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]Bram[/name]
[name]Brent[/name]
[name]Charles[/name]
[name]Christopher[/name]
[name]Evan[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Grant[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Lucas[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name] (nn [name]Nate[/name])
[name]Philip[/name]
[name]Robert[/name]
[name]Thomas[/name]

You have similar taste to my Mom I think. I’m glad to see [name]Sarah[/name] in use. It’s a great name even though it is very common. I know about 10, but I think it is much less common right now, but not dated.

I like [name]Theo[/name] best for boys. I am not a huge fan of [name]Theodore[/name] but love [name]Theo[/name]. I think it works. In general, I think I believe in just naming your child the name you intend to call them. I hate correcting people and telling them to call me [name]Kate[/name], not [name]Katherine[/name] because it’s a hassle and I have not connection to [name]Katherine[/name]. But [name]Kate[/name] is trendier than [name]Katherine[/name] so…

I also like the name [name]Jacob[/name]. It’s a great name even if it is popular. It’s not the end of the world to meet another person with the same name as you.

For girls, I definitely like [name]Lucy[/name] best, but it seems off limits for your family. What about [name]Claire[/name]?

I like [name]Lucy[/name] best on your girls list and think it would be so cute with your other kids names.

For boys I like [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Ronan[/name] best. [name]Ronan[/name] was one of my favourite boy names but my partner didn’t go for it. It may be a little too matchy with [name]Mason[/name], but I love it nonetheless. My son’s name is [name]Theo[/name] and we love his name. We decided to name him just [name]Theo[/name], not [name]Theodore[/name], because as the pp mentioned, that was what we were going to call him and I am not a fan of other potential [name]Theodore[/name] nicknames like [name]Ted[/name], [name]Teddy[/name]. Plus I like the modern vibe of [name]Theo[/name]. Good [name]Luck[/name]!

Thank you everyone!

As r_j pointed out I don’t think I can convince my husband of [name]Orla[/name], and I don’t like [name]Orla[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name] together.

Suggestions I really liked and am adding to my list:
[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Adam[/name]
[name]Joseph[/name]
[name]Grace[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Claire[/name]

Thank you to everyone for your feedback!

For what it’s worth-- I think all the names you added work really well with your sibset!

Congratulations on baby #5! Here’s my two cents:
[name]Jack[/name]- Although I love the name, I do think that it’s important for you and your husband to agree. Maybe it could work as a middle name?
[name]Lincoln[/name]- I do think that this name is too president-y.
[name]Jacob[/name]- I wouldn’t worry too much about [name]Jacob[/name]'s popularity, but because [name]Mason[/name] and [name]Jacob[/name] both have a long “a” I wouldn’t use it
[name]Matthew[/name]- I think this is a perfect name for your set! [name]Mason[/name] and [name]Matthew[/name] complement each other, and just because they start with the same letter doesn’t make them match-y.
[name]Ronan[/name]- Such a gorgeous name! And I think that there is enough difference between [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Mason[/name] to make it work.
[name]Theodore[/name]- I wouldn’t name him “just” [name]Theo[/name]. If you like the nickname, use it!
[name]Ian[/name]- Same as [name]Ronan[/name].
[name]Scott[/name]- I think it’s fine with [name]Sarah[/name] and I actually love the alliteration!

[name]Orla[/name]- I’m with your husband! I don’t think it sounds good with [name]Sarah[/name] or [name]Oscar[/name].
[name]Isabelle[/name]- It’s a classic! And I wouldn’t worry too much about [name]Isabella[/name]'s popularity.
[name]Rose[/name]- It’s my daughter’s name, so I’m a little biased, but I love it!
[name]Lucy[/name]- Adorable!
[name]Annabeth[/name]- Why not call her [name]Annabeth[/name] as a compromise?
[name]Isla[/name]- It’s pretty, but I don’t think it really “matches” your other names.
[name]Aurora[/name]- I don’t like it with [name]Sarah[/name].
[name]Mackenzie[/name]- Too trendy!

Best of luck!
