Looking for Nature Names for Girls (we're picky!)

We’re currently expecting #4, and it’s our second girl. Our boys have family names with unusual middle names, and our daughter has an uncommon nature name with a family middle. We’ve decided we can both agree we like nature names for girls, so we’re going to stick with that same naming convention.

Here’s the thing - all of our children have uncommon names, but we are very picky about one point - they must be easy to spell and pronounce. As in, if you heard you can instinctively spell it, and if you see it there’s no way you could mispronounce it.

Our top choice for this baby is [name]Briar[/name]. We both love the sound of it, and see it working on a child and an adult. Have you guessed our issue yet? The alternate spelling of [name]Brier[/name] is less common, but still legitimate. I also know of at least one boy named Bryer in our town, which makes me think there are even more misspelling opportunities we haven’t thought of yet.

To give you an idea of our style, here are other names we’re considering: [name]Clover[/name] and [name]Marigold[/name] - though we worry they’re too cutesy. I do like that [name]Marigold[/name] has some nickname possibilities that would work for an adult. [name]Juniper[/name] was also in the running, but it’s becoming a little too popular for our tastes. Anything in the top 1,000 is out.

Names that he likes but I vetoed: [name]Cricket[/name], [name]Liberty[/name] (we’re open to virtue names, too)
Names that I like but he vetoed: [name]Lilac[/name], [name]Fawn[/name], [name]Dove[/name], [name]Magnolia[/name]

Any other ideas?

I don’t think [name]Clover[/name] or [name]Marigold[/name] are cutesy compared to other names that you and husband like such as [name]Cricket[/name], [name]Fawn[/name] and [name]Dove[/name]. In fact, I think they are quite lovely.

See! This is why I post to nameberry! I thought I’d exhausted the archives, but you guys are already coming through with some I’ve never considered. alexa400 - Caraway is awesome, and the first I’ve seen it anywhere!

wattle - I think we vetoed some of each other’s names because of the cutesy factor. I just didn’t know if we both were blinded by our particular tastes when it came to [name]Clover[/name] and [name]Marigold[/name]. And I love [name]Wren[/name], but we have a son with the nickname [name]Ren[/name].

[name]Dahlia[/name] is my fave new baby name

I love nature names! [name]Lilac[/name], [name]Clover[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name] are easily some of my favourites.

[name]Snow[/name]
[name]Quilla[/name]
[name]Seneca[/name]
[name]Sequoia[/name]
Isabelline
[name]Ondine[/name]
[name]Kai[/name]

I love [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Junia[/name] and don’t think they are or will be super popular

I know someone who named their baby girl [name]Cedar[/name]. Also–[name]Oakley[/name] is on the rise where I live. I’ve seen it for a girl and boy name, but I’m not a big fan of it. [name]Cedar[/name] and SoLace and unique and have a nature feel. I also love [name]Wren[/name]. Good luck!

Didn’t you post several times a few months back asking for unusual nature suggestions? I think one of those threads had hundreds of responses. I’d suggest going back and combing through the many, many, MANY suggestions you’ve already been given.

No, augusta_lee. I posted a similar request - once - several years ago, and got a handful of responses. I’ve been through the archives, and was looking for a personalized response based on our tastes and specific requirements, just like the hundreds of other people asking about the same names over and over. Bad day, much?

A few from the top of my head;

[name]Perrie[/name]
[name]Zinnia[/name]
[name]Acacia[/name]
[name]Amity[/name]
[name]Arbor[/name]
[name]Maple[/name]
[name]Prairie[/name]
[name]Garland[/name]
[name]Avis[/name]
[name]Gardenia[/name]
[name]Lotus[/name]
[name]Senna[/name]

[name]Bluebelle[/name]
[name]Byrdie[/name]/[name]Birdie[/name]
[name]Calla[/name]
Coriander
[name]Cyan[/name]
[name]Dove[/name]
[name]Fleur[/name]/[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Hadas[/name]
[name]Hyacinth[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Merilyn[/name]
[name]Mimosa[/name]
[name]Onyx[/name]
[name]Orchid[/name]
[name]Paloma[/name]
[name]Petal[/name]
[name]Petunia[/name] (too old lady?)
[name]Phyllis[/name]
[name]Posey[/name]
[name]Tulip[/name]
[name]Violetta[/name]
[name]Wisteria[/name]

Another issue with [name]Briar[/name], is that it means “thorny patch” this isn’t the most promising meaning for a child. When used with [name]Rose[/name] ([name]Briar[/name] [name]Rose[/name], as in Sleeping Beauty), it gives the sense of beauty in the midst of struggles, but by itself…
Here are some other ideas:
[name]Capucine[/name] -French for nasturtium, used as a name in Europe (at least, I once met a woman from Belgium with this name)
[name]Jonquil[/name] -French for daffodil
[name]Phoebe[/name] -cute little bird Eastern phoebe - Wikipedia
[name]Maple[/name]
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Doe[/name]
[name]Slate[/name] -although, this sounds a bit too masculine for me
[name]Plum[/name]

Names that have nature meanings:
[name]Celeste[/name] -heavenly
[name]Tabitha[/name] -gazelle
[name]Petra[/name] -rock, stone

I’m currently reading [name]Atlas[/name] Shrugged and love the main character’s name: [name]Dagny[/name]. It means new day.

[name]Fleur[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]
[name]Halcyon[/name]
[name]Fern[/name]
[name]Leone[/name]
[name]Amaryllis[/name]
Montaigne

[name]Briar[/name] is a bit too negative for me. It’s a symbol for trouble and persecution.

I like Caraway–it’s less obviously nature sounding but still very pretty.

I know it’s been suggested before, but I really like [name]Maple[/name].

Others that are on the top of my “nature” list:
[name]Fern[/name]
[name]Coral[/name]
[name]Nova[/name]
[name]Olive[/name]
[name]Acacia[/name]
